LOS ANGELES (AP) — Los Angeles city leaders honored the lifetime achievements of famed primatologist Jane Goodall by singing "Happy Birthday" to her on her 85th birthday.
Former nicotine research monkeys now at primate sanctuary
GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) — More than two dozen monkeys that were test subjects in nicotine addiction research denounced by British primatologist Jane Goodall have been moved from an Arkansas lab to a Florida primate sanctuary.
ROYAL OAK, Mich. (AP) — The Detroit Zoo says a female chimpanzee named after primatologist Jane Goodall has been born there on the first World Chimpanzee Day.
It says the baby named Jane arrived early Saturday on the anniversary of the date in 1960 that Goodall first traveled to what's now Gombe Stream National Park in Tanzania to study the social interactions of wild chimpanzees.

So it was. As soon as she came into view, the audience in the packed auditorium at the University of Minnesota greeted her with a standing ovation.
Three new children’s books have arrived in time for Women’s History Month with parallel promises: to diversity bookshelves at home and in the classroom with stories of courage, overcoming adversity and dreaming big, even when others say it’s impossible.
All three are written for beginning readers or to be read aloud to them, but each review is followed by a recommended book for more advanced readers.

Environmental and animal activist Jane Goodall said despite the many challenges facing the planet, she maintains hope that people can still save it.
“We do have intelligence, but even better, we have a heart,” the London-born anthropologist and primatologist told a capacity crowd of some 800 people during a Sunday afternoon presentation at the Lensic Performing Arts Center in Santa Fe.
Compassionate leadership course coming to CU Boulder
BOULDER, Colo. (AP) — An open online course about developing compassionate leaders is coming to the University of Colorado.
The Daily Camera reported Monday that Jane Goodall, known worldwide for her research on the relationship between chimpanzees and humans, will lead the course.
The course, which starts this summer, is geared toward K-12 educators, but anyone can enroll.

She’s a Roots and Shoots National Youth Leadership Council member and the three-year president of the Greenwich High School Roots and Shoots club. Jameson is a Jane Goodall Institute Ambassador and two-time winner of town community service awards.
But that isn’t enough for the GHS senior. She wants to grow more in her role as a leader — literally.
New doc ‘JANE’ surprised even Jane Goodall herself
NEW YORK (AP) — Google Earth is getting a revival, as the 3-D mapping service reorients itself to become more of a tool for adventure and exploration.
A central feature in the new Google Earth is Voyager. Google has partnered with such groups as the BBC and NASA to add video clips, photos and text narratives to three-dimensional representations of particular locations.
Wildlife doc ‘Born in China’ takes viewers on animal adventure
NEW YORK (AP) — The magic of nature and its wildlife often takes great patience for the humans who want to revel in it.
Disneynature's new film, "Born in China," is a perfect example of that. The documentary is a little over an hour but it was shot over three years. Dame Jane Goodall, an ambassador for Disneynature, said the imagery was breathtaking and shows the personality of the multiple species captured.

“Kauai bees are healthy” is a nice sound bite because everywhere else in the U.S., bees seem to be in serious trouble. All things are relative. However, I see the results quite differently than did the Department of Agriculture chief.
NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Jane Goodall, the renowned conservationist, is scheduled to deliver a Tulane University lecture on her life's work.
School officials say the talk is planned for 7 p.m. March 16 at the Dixon Hall auditorium. A question-and-answer session and a book signing are also planned.
Tulane said in a statement that Goodall is the founder of the Jane Goodall Institute, which is marking its 40th anniversary this year.
DANBURY - City middle school students prepared for National History Day with projects that explored events ranging from civil rights to women’s rights.
Some 200 seventh and eighth graders from Westside Middle School Academy researched history projects to honor National History Day, according to a release.
For example, eighth graders Kaitlyn Klampert and Kiana Shabazz-Williams collaborated on a research project about primate expert Jane Goodall and her work with chimpanzees, the release said.
DANBURY - A five-part series of weekly lectures about climate change is planned at Western Connecticut State University’s Jane Goodall Center, according to a release.
The free series, which runs Tuesday nights starting Jan. 31, will be coordinated by Mitch Wagener, a professor of biological and environmental sciences at the university, the release said.
This 5-minute film includes excerpts of interviews with a number of academics and conservationists who are skeptical of an ongoing effort to remove Endangered Species Act protections for grizzly bears, which includes a ban hunting within the isolated Greater Yellowstone area. UN chief enlists DiCaprio and other stars to plead for peace
UNITED NATIONS (AP) — Leonardo DiCaprio, Stevie Wonder, Michael Douglas and other stars pleaded for peace and the survival of the planet Friday which Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said is "closer to conflict than we may like to think."
At a ceremony Friday to commemorate the International Day of Peace on Sept. 21, Ban urged all combatants to lay down their arms that day. And he rang the Peace Bell presented to the United Nations by Japan to "sound a call for peace and a day of non-violence."
