Column: Day eyes return to No. 1, even if it costs him sleep
Jason Day wants to get back to No. 1 in the world, and he's willing to lose sleep over it.
"There has to be some kind of sacrifice," Day said in the Bahamas before shutting it down for the year. "I was reading the Kobe Bryant book, and he knew there was something he had to sacrifice, so he sacrificed sleep. Because he couldn't sacrifice family, he couldn't sacrifice competing, and not working.
"What can I sacrifice?" he added with a smile. "Sleep."
Melbourne’s sandbelt: a regular home for golf’s World Cup
The World Cup of Golf appears to have found a home in southeast Melbourne.
For the third consecutive time, one of golf's biggest team events is being played at a famous sandbelt course in the southeastern Australian city. The 28-team tournament, based on the Official World Golf Ranking, begins Thursday at Metropolitan Golf Club, with Denmark returning as the defending champion from nearby Kingston Heath in 2016.

JEJU ISLAND, South Korea (AP) — Chez Reavie overcame cool, windy conditions for a 4-under 68 and a one-stroke lead after the first round of the CJ Cup at Nine Bridges on Thursday.
In the breezy conditions, the back nine of the course posed the most difficulty, but the 36-year-old American made two birdies and negotiated it in 35 after starting on the 10th tee, and then picked up three shots on his final nine.

Instead, he put on bright yellow — a shirt that matched the color hat his buddy Jarrod Lyle liked to wear when he played.
Thomas, Fleetwood, Poulter share lead at Firestone
AKRON, Ohio (AP) — Nobody has a better scoring average Saturday on the PGA Tour than Tiger Woods, and the Bridgestone Invitational would be a good time to keep that up.

Neither will Rory McIlroy, Jason Day or anyone else wanting to keep pace.

SOUTHAMPTON, N.Y. (AP) — The U.S. Open cut sliced off some huge names.
There won't be an inspiring weekend return to the tournament for Tiger Woods, nor a fifth major championship for Rory McIlroy.
Jordan Spieth won't get his fourth major, Martin Kaymer never contended for a third and Jason Day is going home without his second. Same deal for some other owners of one major title: Sergio Garcia, Adam Scott and Keegan Bradley.
DALLAS (AP) — The wind finally blew on the new Trinity Forest course at the AT&T Byron Nelson.

Wise shot a 3-under 68 to pull even with Marc Leishman, four shots ahead of Matt Jones and Kevin Na going into the final round.

Jason Day wasn't paying attention, which probably helped.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Tiger Woods said he's on the verge of putting it all together and winning his first PGA tournament in five years — if he can just start rolling the ball a little better on the greens.
The 42-year-old Woods made some significant progress in that area Saturday shooting a 3-under 68, but he was nine strokes behind leader Jason Day entering the final round of the Wells Fargo Championship and all but out of contention.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Peter Malnati and Tiger Woods both had reason to celebrate on the ninth green at Quail Hollow at the end of their rounds.
Malnati was coming off two straight birdies to take the lead Friday in the Wells Fargo Championship when he put his 5-iron in a deep bunker to the right, with the green running away from him. He was trying to blast out to 15 feet, but he got the club too much under the ball and feared for the worst until it cleared the lip by inches.
RENO, Nev. (AP) — A rising young star on the University of Oregon golf team has been invited to play in the PGA Tour's Barracuda Championship in Reno this summer.

Cameron Davis wins Australian Open by one stroke
SYDNEY (AP) — Cameron Davis came from six shots behind going into the final round to win the Australian Open by one stroke on Sunday, shooting a 7-under 64 that included a birdie on the 18th and an eagle after holing a 100-meter approach shot.
The 22-year-old Australian finished with an 11-under total of 273 at The Australian Golf Club, where gusty and unpredictable afternoon winds made scoring tough for all four rounds.
