PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. (AP) — Someone wanted to know about Rickie Fowler's haircut, not the kind of question you usually get after taking a share of the lead in the U.S. Open.

Column: Dufner does the math in determining success rate
ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. (AP) — Jason Dufner scanned down both sides of the crowded practice range Tuesday at Sea Island as he tried to find a spot to practice.
So many players, even if he doesn't know all their names.
And so few trophies.
It was another reminder to Dufner that golf has a failure rate unlike most other sports.
Chez Reavie takes 1st-round lead at CJ Cup with 4-under 68
JEJU ISLAND, South Korea (AP) — Chez Reavie overcame cool, windy conditions for a 4-under 68 and a one-stroke lead after the first round of the CJ Cup at Nine Bridges on Thursday.
In the breezy conditions, the back nine of the course posed the most difficulty, but the 36-year-old American made two birdies and negotiated it in 35 after starting on the 10th tee, and then picked up three shots on his final nine.

The Latest: 4-way tie at 1-under-69 at US Open
SOUTHAMPTON, N.Y. (AP) — The Latest on the U.S. Open's first round Thursday (all times local):
Dustin Johnson, Ian Poulter, Scott Piercy and Russell Henley were tied at 1-under-69 as the first round of the U.S. Open concluded.
Shinnecock Hills got the best of many of the world's top players, including Tiger Woods (8 over) and Phil Mickelson (7 over).
But Johnson and company held a one-stroke lead over Jason Dufner. The rest of the field was over par.
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — Justin Thomas was the nation's top college golfer at the University of Alabama, and now he's No. 1 in the professional rankings.
Thomas won five PGA Tour titles in 2017, including the PGA Championship, to earn player of the year honors. He has carried on with two more wins already this year and holds the No. 1 ranking going into next week's U.S. Open.
PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Webb Simpson navigated his way through a few mistakes but not too much stress to win The Players Championship on Sunday.
Staked to a seven-shot lead, no one got closer than four shots of Simpson, even after a double bogey on the 18th hole when his only concern was finishing the hole at the TPC Sawgrass. He closed with a 1-over 73 for a four-shot victory, his biggest title since the 2012 U.S. Open at Olympic Club.
Horschel, Piercy win Zurich Classic team event
AVONDALE, La. (AP) — When Scott Piercy tried to deflect credit to Billy Horschel for their nerve-testing, one-shot victory in the Zurich Classic team event, Horschel grinned and went with it.
"I'd like to thank myself for playing well this week," Horschel began with a laugh. "No, it was great to play with Scott. Our games match up well. We are really good ball-strikers. We think the same way. ... I don't have to worry about him making a bad decision."
Horschel, Piercy win Zurich Classic
AVONDALE, La. (AP) — Billy Horschel and Scott Piercy played bogey-free in the alternate-shot format and closed with a 5-under 67 to win the Zurich Classic.
Horschel and Piercy surged into the lead with birdies on the 10th and 11th holes and finished with seven pars to hold off Jason Dufner and Pat Perez. Dufner missed a 14-foot birdie putt on the last hole at TPC Louisiana that would have forced a playoff.
Stephen Curry had a triple double with 33 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists, Kevin Durant scored 33 and the Golden State Warriors took a 2-0 lead in the NBA Finals with a 132-113 victory in Game Two last night. The big nights from the former MVPs made coach Steve Kerr a winner in his return to the bench after a more than six-week absence following complications from back surgery. This marks the second straight year Golden State won the first two games of the Finals. Cleveland rallied to win last year's series in seven games. LeBron James had 29 points, 11 rebounds and 14 assists to tie Magic Johnson's record with his eighth career Finals triple-double. It was just the second time in NBA playoff history two players had triple-doubles in the same game. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (then Lew Alcindor) and Walt Frazier did it in 1970.
DUBLIN, Ohio (AP) — One of the best perks from winning the Memorial is to walk off the 18th green and into a warm handshake from tournament host Jack Nicklaus.
Not to be overlooked for Jason Dufner was the posse of pals who also wanted to celebrate with him.
Jason Dufner bounces back to win the Memorial
DUBLIN, Ohio (AP) — Jason Dufner spent quality time on the practice range that played in a big role in his victory at the Memorial.
It had nothing to do with his swing.
This was about beating balls to burn off the anger from a 5-over 77 in the third round that looked as though it might cost him the tournament. His pulse back to normal, which for Dufner means barely beating, he bounced back in a big way Sunday.
DUBLIN, Ohio (AP) — Anirban Lahiri played so well Sunday that he wished he could have kept playing.
"I would have liked maybe four or five holes more, actually," Lahiri said after shooting a 7-under 65 to tie for second in the Memorial, three shots behind Jason Dufner. "Because I was playing really good. And I could have probably made a couple more birdies. But like I say, I'm really happy with the way I played. I felt really relaxed out there."
DUBLIN, Ohio (AP) — The brother of Dustin Johnson was leaning on a wall outside the caddie area when the phone rang. It was the world's No. 1 player, and Austin Johnson headed out to the practice range at Muirfield Village. It was time to get back to work.
The question going into Friday at the Memorial was for how long?
HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (AP) — Jason Dufner took more than a solid showing away from the Masters last week. He took inspiration from winner Sergio Garcia.
Dufner finished 33rd in the year's first major, things getting away from him late in the final round a week ago. But he took something from Garcia by managing his expectations and letting his game show through. And Dufner believes that's why he's got a one-shot lead heading to the final round of the RBC Heritage.
AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) — The Latest on the first round of the Masters on Thursday (all times local):
How tough were the conditions in the opening round of the Masters?
Only 11 players broke par Thursday.
Charley Hoffman shot a stunning 7-under 65, but he was in a league of his own with winds gusting close to 40 mph. The only other player in the 60s is William McGirt with a 69.

Stricker, Kelly open Shootout with scramble 56
NAPLES, Fla. (AP) — Steve Stricker returned from a long layoff to team with Jerry Kelly to take the first-round lead in the Franklin Templeton Shootout.
The Madison, Wisconsin, duo shot a 16-under 56 on Thursday in the scramble format for a one-stroke lead over Harris English and Matt Kuchar at Tiburon Golf Club.
SPRINGFIELD, N.J. (AP) — A drab year for Jimmy Walker took a turn for the worse two weeks ago at the British Open, when he stayed in what was dubbed the "frat house" at Royal Troon with Jordan Spieth, Rickie Fowler, Justin Thomas, Jason Dufner and Zach Johnson.
Walker was the only one to miss the cut.
He still stayed the weekend. He just stayed away from the golf course, and his clubs. How does one kill time in such a small Scottish town?
More than being the first Swede to win a major, Henrik Stenson remembers those days when just about every European player was asked about ending the drought. Paul Lawrie of Scotland won the British Open at Carnoustie in 1999, it was another eight years and 31 majors before Padraig Harrington won his first major, also in the British Open at Carnoustie.
Golf goes in cycles, and that's where the game is now.
Starting with Harrington's first major in the British Open,...
