2 women die in Christmas Day wreck in Alabama
JASPER, Ala. (AP) — Two women have been killed in a two-car wreck early on Christmas Day in Alabama.
News outlets reported that the Alabama Department of Public Safety said the wreck happened near Jasper in Walker County around 12:15 a.m. Tuesday.
The victims were 38-year-old Kerrie C. Martin of Empire and 61-year-old Suzanne C. Brown of Cordova. Troopers say Martin was driving one of the vehicles in the wreck and Brown was a passenger in the other vehicle.

Jasper Mayor Terry Seitz announced Thursday that he will resign Jan. 1 to take a staff post with Braun, who unseated incumbent Democratic Sen. Joe Donnelly in the Nov. 6 election.

2nd man who escaped Alabama jail captured
JASPER, Ala. (AP) — Sheriff's deputies in Alabama have captured a second inmate who escaped from a work release center last week.
The Alabama Department of Corrections said in a news release Monday morning that Walker County deputies caught 39-year-old Jacob Larry Burnett Saturday night while responding to a report of a person breaking into a vehicle near Nauvoo.
Alabama man sentenced for trying to have sex with minors
NEWNAN, Ga. (AP) — An Alabama man has been sentenced to federal prison for enticing a minor to engage in illegal sexual activity on two occasions.
U.S. Attorney Byung J. "BJay" Pak, in a news release, says 40-year-old Christopher Braden, of Jasper, Alabama, was sentenced Tuesday to 10 years and six months in prison. He also will be required to register as a sex offender when he is released from prison.
Alabama agency: Councilman found dead killed woman then self
DORA, Ala. (AP) — Preliminary autopsy results in Alabama show a city councilman and part-time police officer fatally shot a woman and then killed himself.
News outlets report that authorities have not released a motive in the deaths of 70-year-old John Allen Softley and 30-year-old Monica Jean Graves.
Their bodies were found in a parked pickup truck last month by a passing motorist. Softley was a Parrish City councilman and part-time Jasper police officer.

2 rail cars to be renovated for French Lick-Jasper route

The Indiana Railway Museum in French Lick plans will use a $250,000 grant from the state's Office of Tourism Development to restore and refurbish a 1940s-era Atlantic Coast Line Railroad car and a 1950s-era Canadian National Railway dining car.
Holcomb adds 4 counties to disaster areas from flooding

Hoosier National Forest ends year-round bat cave closures
JASPER, Ind. (AP) — Southern Indiana's sprawling Hoosier National Forest is ending the year-round cave closures officials imposed nearly a decade ago to protect hibernating bats from a deadly disease.
The policy barring the public from caves in the 200,000-acre (81,000-hectare) national forest took effect in 2009 to combat the spread of white-nose syndrome. That fungal disease has killed millions of bats in the U.S. and Canada.

Sandhill cranes making migration stop in Indiana marshes
MEDARYVILLE, Ind. (AP) — Several thousand sandhill cranes have been roosting in rural northwestern Indiana as part of their annual fall migration.
More than 10,000 cranes a day have been counted at Jasper-Pulaski Fish & Wildlife Area. The marsh-filled wildlife area, about 40 miles southeast of Gary, has long been a pit stop for cranes as they migrate from late September through December.
Southwestern Indiana man sentenced for crash that killed 3
BLOOMFIELD, Ind. (AP) — A judge has sentenced a southwestern Indiana man to 15 years for causing a crash that killed three family members returning from a band competition.
Greene Superior Court Judge Dena Martin sentenced 20-year-old Mason Hartke of Jasper on Wednesday to five years on each of three counts of operating a vehicle causing death while intoxicated. She suspended 1½ years of each sentence.
Alabama man pleads guilty to meth trafficking in New Mexico
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — An Alabama man has pleaded guilty to a methamphetamine trafficking charge in New Mexico and is facing a five-year prison sentence.
Prosecutors say 25-year-old Ralonte Terrell Swain, of Jasper, entered a plea agreement Monday in federal court in Albuquerque.
Swain remains in custody pending a sentencing hearing, which has yet to be scheduled.
Wetlands group donates 107 acres to Patoka wildlife refuge
WINSLOW, Ind. (AP) — A southern Indiana wildlife refuge has grown by 107 acres (43 hectares) after conservation groups donated a tract to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
The land donated by Wetlands America Trust and Ducks Unlimited is now part of the Patoka River National Wildlife Refuge, which spans about 9,000 acres (3,642 hectares) in Gibson and Pike counties along 30 miles (48 kilometers) of the Patoka River.
Sandhill cranes have been arriving by the thousands at Indiana's Jasper-Pulaski Fish and Wildlife Area during their annual migratory trip from northern Midwest states to the southeast coast area.
JP's online report notes that 3,848 cranes had arrived by Oct. 10 and 4,759 were there Tuesday, Oct. 17.
The cranes will keep arriving until their northwest Indiana stay-over peaks in late November or early December.

Indiana changes child abuse reporting procedures
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (AP) — Indiana school employees are now required to report suspected child abuse or neglect directly to the Department of Child Services or local law enforcement instead of first notifying a school administrator.
Republican State Sen. Mark Messmer of Jasper co-authored the legislation. He told the Tribune Star that the change was made because there's been a history of issues being swept under the rug and not reported.
Indiana boy, 6, starts aluminum can recycling service
JASPER, Ind. (AP) — A 6-year-old southern Indiana boy with a passion for recycling has started an aluminum can recycling service to save up for college.
Eli Harting travels around the city of Jasper every two weeks with his father, collecting and crushing cans for recycling.
He's saving the money he makes for college and to get a bigger truck for his business in the city about 50 miles northeast of Evansville.
Republican Indiana lawmaker launching bid for Senate
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Indiana state Rep. Mike Braun plans to join the increasingly crowded Republican primary for U.S. Senate.
The Jasper lawmaker said Tuesday that he intends to "move forward" with a bid, which he will formally announce soon.
Braun was elected to the Legislature in 2014 and also owns an auto parts distribution company.
