Cowboys eyeing pay window with draft gambles Gregory, Smith
FRISCO, Texas (AP) — Day after day a little more than two years ago, Randy Gregory and Jaylon Smith worked behind the scenes while the Dallas Cowboys practiced, the defensive end and linebacker hoping to prove they would be worth the wait.
Both were considered second-round gambles for vastly different reasons — Gregory because of a battle with substance abuse that eventually led to three suspensions, Smith because of a devastating left knee injury in his final college game.
Cowboys stuff Seahawks’ run in wild-card win; it’s pass next
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — The young Dallas defense stuffed the NFL's No. 1 rushing offense in a wild-card win over the Seattle Seahawks.
Now it's time for the Cowboys to take on either the league's all-time leader in yards passing in Drew Brees of New Orleans, or this year's fifth-best passing offense in Jared Goff and the Los Angeles Rams. The divisional round game will be next weekend.
Prescott, Cowboys wrap up NFC East with 27-20 win over Bucs
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Dak Prescott shared a brief hug with star running back Ezekiel Elliott after the Dallas quarterback kneeled twice to wrap up their second NFC East title in three seasons together.
The postgame celebration was equally muted after Prescott accounted for two touchdowns and Jaylon Smith returned a fumble 69 yards for a score in a 27-20 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday.
Key penalties, turnovers cost Bucs in 27-20 loss to Dallas
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — The big plays were there for Tampa Bay and its top-five offense on Sunday against the Dallas Cowboys. So were plenty of penalty flags and fumbles.
The result: Another prolific offensive performance, and another Buccaneers loss.
Week 13 chock full of bad calls and bad looks for the NFL
Just when the NFL was enjoying a ratings rebound and an explosion of offensive firepower that has fans giddy over their favorite and/or fantasy teams, the league reverted to its bumbling ways in Week 13.
It began with a prime-time officiating fiasco by its most experienced crew.
Cowboys unable to defend star at home except for Jones shove
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — The Dallas Cowboys defense might want to delete that last group photo. It was a celebration that proved a bit premature.
On this Monday night, the Cowboys didn't defend their star in a 28-14 loss — except for Byron Jones shoving Kevin Byard when the Tennessee Titans safety did his best imitation of Terrell Owens' infamous taunting on the midfield logo 18 years ago.
Cowboys’ draft gamble paying off in emerging LB Jaylon Smith
FRISCO, Texas (AP) — Jaylon Smith makes himself presentable for the cameras, then turns to his locker to grab one last thing before starting an interview: the neck pad given to him by hard-nosed defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli to acknowledge the Dallas linebacker's physical style of play.
Eli Manning under siege in Giants’ loss to Cowboys
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Eli Manning was getting hammered hard even when he wasn't getting sacked by the Dallas Cowboys.
When the New York Giants quarterback scrambled up the middle into the open field in the third quarter, he took a crushing blow from linebacker Jaylon Smith .

The Cowboys took Leighton Vander Esch of Boise State with the 19th pick in the first round of the NFL draft Thursday night.
FRISCO, Texas (AP) — The Dallas Cowboys decided linebacker was a bigger priority than receiver even after releasing franchise touchdown catch leader Dez Bryant.
The Cowboys took Leighton Vander Esch of Boise State with the 19th pick in the first round of the draft Thursday night. He walked the stage at his new home field in nearby Arlington, where Dallas was hosting the first draft in an NFL stadium.
"It made me speechless," Vander Esch said. "It's the craziest moment of my life so far."

Cowboys’ star LB Sean Lee out vs Eagles with hamstring issue
FRISCO, Texas (AP) — Dallas Cowboys linebacker Sean Lee has been ruled out of Sunday's game against NFL-leading Philadelphia because of a hamstring injury.
The 2016 All-Pro was injured in the first quarter of last week's 27-7 loss to Atlanta. The Cowboys lost both games he missed because of hamstring issues earlier in the season and gave up three touchdown drives after the injury against the Falcons.
Way We Hear It: Dallas Cowboys LB Jaylon Smith still has limitations
The return of Dallas Cowboys LB Jaylon Smith to the field has been nothing short of staggering. The player who shredded his knee so badly on the final play of his college career at Notre Dame that some worried he might never play football again has been a fixture on the Cowboys' defense.
Cowboys’ Hitchens out at least 8 weeks with knee fracture
FRISCO, Texas (AP) — Dallas linebacker Anthony Hitchens broke a bone in his right knee in a preseason game against Oakland and is likely to miss at least eight weeks.
The Cowboys feared the injury was worse after Hitchens went to the ground clutching the knee in the final seconds of the second quarter in a 24-20 victory over the Raiders on Saturday night. The team said on its website Sunday that Hitchens sustained a tibial plateau fracture.
ARLINGTON, Texas – Jaylon Smith waited more than 19 months for that moment Saturday night.
Not just his first game back on the field. His first tackle, too.
In the first quarter of the Cowboys' preseason game at AT&T Stadium, Smith raced in to stop Indianapolis Colts tight end Jack Doyle on third down and force a punt – the highlight of his dozen or so snaps working with the first-team defense at middle linebacker.
The YMCA of Greater Fort Wayne is teaming with Parkview Sports Medicine to bring "Active Science at the Y with Jaylon Smith" to its after-school programs.
Active Science blends physical activity with hands-on science, technology, engineering and math learning concepts to create opportunities for children to play, explore and discover, a news release from the YMCA and Parkview Sports said Tuesday.
OXNARD, Calif. (AP) — Jaylon Smith found himself being greeted by Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones after the linebacker's first day off at training camp, and following his first stretch of three consecutive practices in about a year and a half.
FRISCO, Texas – With uncertainty surrounding their linebacker corps, the Cowboys added a familiar face with the signing of Justin Durant on Thursday.
With just two days until they report to training camp, the Cowboys needed depth at the position, which has been strained since the offseason began.
If you can believe it, Jaylon Smith had never before attended a Komets game. But he's here tonight, donning a No. 9 jersey with his name on it.
The former Bishop Luers and Notre Dame linebacker, now with the Dallas Cowboys, got to meet the Komets' first captain, George Drysdale, and go on the air with Shane Albahrani. Check out the photos.
