Duke savors surprising regional title, 1st trip to supers

DURHAM, N.C. (AP) — A breakout year for Duke's baseball program continues this weekend as the Blue Devils prepare for the first super regional in school history.

If they can beat Texas Tech twice in Lubbock, the Blue Devils will advance to their first College World Series since 1961.

To get this far, Duke had to win four straight games in its regional tournament — and came from behind in each game.

"The one thing about this group is," coach Chris Pollard said, "they've got willpower."

Duke sweeps Georgia to earn 1st super regional berth

ATHENS, Ga. (AP) — Griffin Conine homered twice and Duke earned the first super regional berth in school history by sweeping two games from Georgia on Monday, beating the Bulldogs 8-5 and 8-4 in the NCAA Tournament.

Jimmy Herron and Zack Kone also homered in the winner-take-all game to send the second-seeded Blue Devils (44-16) into a best-of-three super regional series at No. 9 national seed Texas Tech this weekend.

MIAMI (AP) — Jeff Conine, who goes by the nickname Mr. Marlin, is part of the purge of Miami Marlins executives before the sale of the team to Derek Jeter's investment group.

Conine said Saturday he was told he won't be retained. He helped the Marlins win two World Series and has been a special assistant to the president since 2008.

Group to run 7 marathons in 7 days on 7 continents

MIAMI (AP) — A group led by Miami Marlins president David Samson plans to run seven marathons in seven days on seven continents.

Others scheduled to participate in the World Marathon Challenge include Marlins president of baseball operations Michael Hill and team executive Jeff Conine, Boston Marathon race director Dave McGillivray and Paralympian triathlete Sarah Reinertsen.
