NEW YORK (AP) — The New York Knicks have hired former NBA coach Keith Smart and three others as assistants on David Fizdale's coaching staff.
Jud Buechler, Pat Sullivan and Royal Ivey were also added Thursday to join Fizdale, who was hired last month to replace Jeff Hornacek.

NEW YORK (AP) — David Fizdale has been hired as coach of the Knicks, saying he is hoping to "build the type of winning team the passionate fans of New York will be proud of."

The Knicks agreed to hire Fizdale on Thursday, a person with knowledge of the details said.

CLEVELAND (AP) — The trades, dysfunction and months of madness are all behind the Cavaliers.
A new season lies ahead. The one that matters.
LeBron James played in his 82nd game, scored 10 points and then got some rest for the playoffs as the Cavaliers concluded a "crazy" regular season with a 110-98 loss on Wednesday night to New York in what was Jeff Hornacek's last game as Knicks coach.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Knicks coach Jeff Hornacek said it may be time to get Damian Lillard into the Most Valuable Player conversation.

Lillard made eight 3-pointers, one off his career high, in the Blazers' eighth straight win.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Something was not right for the Los Angeles Clippers at halftime Friday, beyond just trailing the New York Knicks by three.
"It felt like we were just going to try and outscore them," said Clippers coach Doc Rivers. "I asked them if it was an All-Star Game. Just no defense."
That was corrected in a big way in the second half, the Clippers storming out with a 28-8 run and rolling to a 128-105 victory.
Kanter, Knicks end long trip with 22-point win over Suns
PHOENIX (AP) — The New York Knicks did not look like a worn-out team playing consecutive nights at the end of its longest road trip of the season.
Instead, the Knicks methodically and persistently took it to the young and frequently frustrated Phoenix Suns.
Enes Kanter scored 15 of his 20 points in the first quarter and the Knicks never trailed in a 107-85 victory on Friday.
"Most teams cash that last one in because they are ready to go home," New York coach Jeff Hornacek said. "Our guys didn't."

Hardaway Jr. returns to Knicks on minutes restriction
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Tim Hardaway Jr. returned to the New York Knicks on Friday night at Minnesota after missing 20 games with a stress injury in his lower left leg.
New York coach Jeff Hornacek said Hardaway's minutes would be limited as he builds up stamina and the fifth-year swingman will come off the bench initially. Hardaway last played on Nov. 29 and has been practicing with the team to test his injury.
Hardaway was cleared to return after feeling good after Friday morning's shootaround.
Porzingis scores 30, Knicks hold off Hawks for 111-107 win
NEW YORK (AP) — The New York Knicks are still trying to learn how to make winning plays down the stretch, no matter the opponent.
For starters, how to hold big leads in the fourth quarter. Or to make sure not to foul 3-point shooters. Or to limit easy opportunities at the free throw line.
They did none of this Sunday night and still escaped with a win over one of the worst teams in the NBA.
Lee, Porzingis lead Knicks past Grizzlies, 99-88
NEW YORK (AP) — Tim Hardaway Jr. is still out and Kristaps Porzingis couldn't find a rhythm coming back, so the Knicks needed to find offense somewhere.

The losing appears here to stay.
The New York Knicks have entered a rebuilding mode, with new president Steve Mills and general manager Scott Perry touting the team's youth even before they had traded Anthony on the eve of training camp.
The young players might be ready to win in a couple years, but for now, it looks like another long season inside Madison Square Garden.
ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — A look at some of the highlights from Saturday's games in the Orlando Pro Summer League:

Anthony helps Knicks edge 76ers 114-113 in finale
NEW YORK (AP) — The fans tried to get Carmelo Anthony back on the floor, chanting "We want Melo! We want Melo!" in the fourth quarter.
They didn't get to see him play again Wednesday.
They might not get to see him play as a Knick ever again.

He plans to meet with team president Phil Jackson on Thursday and doesn't know what comes after that.
Carmelo Anthony decides to play in Knicks’ season finale
NEW YORK (AP) — Carmelo Anthony has decided to play in what could be his final game with the New York Knicks.

NEW YORK (AP) — Derrick Rose's season is over early because of knee surgery again.
The New York Knicks guard has torn cartilage in his left knee and the team said he will miss the remaining five games.
"It's tough for Derrick. He's played hard all year," coach Jeff Hornacek said. "I didn't hear the real report on it. He'll get that taken care of and probably be back. But he's worked hard (over) the last summer with yoga, those kind of things, to get his body in great shape. Feel bad for him."

NEW YORK (AP) — A year after being fired, Derek Fisher is back in NBA arenas at the TV table.

Anthony, Knicks rally from 13 down to beat Pacers 87-81
NEW YORK (AP) — Jeff Hornacek basically conceded his team's chances of making the postseason Tuesday, and with the New York Knicks six games back of the final Eastern Conference playoff spot, All-Star Carmelo Anthony understands his coach's stance.
"It's rough. I think you already know how rough that is for me," Anthony said. "But we got to play it out."
ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — There is no question Kristaps Porzingis is more comfortable playing power forward, where he can take advantage of his superior shooting ability.

New Knicks’ dysfunction: A wild Wednesday at MSG
NEW YORK (AP) — Jeff Hornacek was told to expect days like this in New York.
Although with the Knicks, dysfunction often lasts entire seasons.

Once the fighting was done, there was yet another loss on the basketball court.

Knicks guard Lee sidelined with sore wrist
ATLANTA (AP) — Knicks guard Courtney Lee did not dress for Wednesday's game against the Atlanta Hawks because of a sore wrist.

Anthony scores 33 to help Knicks hold off Kings 103-100
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — For a team that's been on the wrong end of lopsided losses too often this season, the New York Knicks have become pretty good at pulling out the close ones.
It's not exactly the plan new coach Jeff Hornacek laid out at the start, but it's one he's willing to live with for now.
Carmelo Anthony scored 33 points, including two free throws with 14.8 seconds remaining, and New York held on to beat the Sacramento Kings 103-100 Friday night.

Knicks hold off Kings 106-98 for eighth win in 11 games
NEW YORK (AP) — They were bad enough to allow 18 straight points yet still good enough to win.

"It's a line drive in the score book, right?" coach Jeff Hornacek said.
Derrick Rose and Carmelo Anthony each scored 20 points and the Knicks held off the Sacramento Kings 106-98 on Sunday night for their eighth win in 11 games.

Fraternizing with the enemy? Some NBA coaches even set it up
NEW YORK (AP) — Kristaps Porzingis came to the NBA from Europe as a 7-footer with 3-point range, so the comparisons to Dirk Nowitzki were inevitable.
Jeff Hornacek figured the best way for Porzingis to play like Nowitzki was to play with Nowitzki.
So the New York Knicks coach called Dallas coach Rick Carlisle in the offseason and asked if his veteran star would be open to working out with the second-year forward.
Porzingis scores career-high 35, Knicks top Pistons 105-102

"He's figuring everything out," point guard Derrick Rose said. "Like, he's going out here scoring 30 and he really don't know the NBA yet."
