Indiana superintendent criticized for letter seeking prayers
ELLETTSVILLE, Ind. (AP) — A southern Indiana school superintendent's letter asking local churches to pray for the district has led to criticism that he may have overstepped the boundary between church and state.
The letter from Richland-Bean Blossom Community School Corp. Superintendent Jerry Sanders was posted on social media earlier this month by Turning Point Apostolic Church, The Herald Times reported.
San Diego mayor unveils plan to integrate immigrants
SAN DIEGO (AP) — San Diego plans to hire its first manager to lead an ambitious effort to welcome immigrants and refugees and integrate them into the community through education and job assistance, the city's Republican mayor said Monday, in sharp contrast to President Donald Trump's rhetoric.
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — In a win for public employee unions, the California Supreme Court on Thursday said San Diego's mayor should have met with representatives for city workers before the city placed a measure on the 2012 ballot that cut workers' retirement benefits.
BRANDON, Miss. (AP) — Jerry Sanders has been sitting in a jail cell on a relatively minor charge of methamphetamine possession for more than a year — longer than the sentence he could get if he's convicted.
And with no money to post bail or hire his own lawyer, he may be sitting there for weeks or months more.
"I miss my children, I miss my woman, I miss my dog, I miss my job, I miss my home — everything," Sanders, 58, said recently by videoconference from inside the Rankin County jail in Brandon.
San Diego pension ballot measure clears legal hurdle
SAN DIEGO (AP) — A California court on Tuesday backed a voter-approved measure to cut retirement benefits for San Diego city workers, a decision that supporters and opponents said may encourage other cities and counties to pursue similar efforts.
The 4th District Court of Appeal overturned a state labor board ruling that San Diego's 2012 ballot measure was invalid because then-Mayor Jerry Sanders campaigned for it and didn't negotiate with labor unions.
