White says five people died in Illinois automobile accidents the past two Halloweens. He reminded motorists Tuesday that pint-sized ghosts, witches and skeletons will be out and about Wednesday for trick-or-treating. He says drivers should slow down as children will be crossing streets.
State: Illinois licenses, IDs still valid to board planes
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — Officials say people will be able to board airplanes using current Illinois driver's licenses and ID cards even though the state won't be in full compliance with the federal Real ID law by next month's deadline.

Illinois libraries receive grants for after-school programs
CHICAGO (AP) — More than two dozen libraries across Illinois will receive grants to teach middle and high school students how to use the latest technology.
Secretary of State Jesse White, who also serves as the state librarian, announced the some $525,000 in Project Next Generation grants.
The program provides funding for libraries to offer after-school programs with access to computers, software and other technology. Mentors are hired to help students.
Challenger doubts Jesse White’s ability to finish 6th term
CHICAGO (AP) — Illinois Secretary of State Jessie White is seeking a sixth term in the post, and his Republican opponent maintains he has been in the office too long.
The Democrat said he would not seek another term in 2014 and again in 2018, only to change his mind. On Tuesday, White told the Chicago Tribune Editorial Board his next term would be his last.
Republican candidate and Grundy County State's Attorney Jason Helland said it is time to retire White.
Illinois to impose tougher penalty for texting while driving
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — People caught texting while driving will face stiffer penalties under a new Illinois law.
Starting July 1, 2019 drivers caught texting will be issued a moving violation that will go on their driving record. Anyone convicted of three moving violations in a 12-month period may have their license suspended.
Under the current law that took effect in 2014 a first offense for texting while driving is a non-moving violation and doesn't affect a person's driving record.
