Gase fills out Jets staff with Cooter, Jefferson among hires
NEW YORK (AP) — Adam Gase's coaching staff with the New York Jets has youth, experience, family ties and plenty of personalities.
The team announced that Gase filled out his staff Friday, including hiring Jim Bob Cooter as running backs coach, Shawn Jefferson as assistant head coach-offense/wide receivers and Frank Bush as assistant head coach-defense/inside linebackers.

Lions not renewing offensive coordinator Cooter’s contract
ALLEN PARK, Mich. (AP) — The Detroit Lions are not renewing offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter's contract after the team sputtered to a 6-10 season while quarterback Matthew Stafford struggled.
The Lions announced their decision Tuesday, two days after finishing 6-10 in coach Matt Patricia's first season at the helm. Cooter was a holdover from Jim Caldwell's staff, but his first season with Patricia did not go well.
Trickery not enough for sputtering Lions offense
DETROIT (AP) — The Detroit Lions tried to make it work without experienced weapons around quarterback Matthew Stafford on Sunday.
Once again, the offense couldn't do enough as the home team lost 30-16 to the Los Angeles Rams, the Lions' fifth loss in six games.
Orlando, Fla. — Lions coach Matt Patricia plans to have a hand in everything, but when it comes to his coaching staff, he doesn't want to micromanage.
And while he has said he'll reserve the right to make a play call, on offense, defense or special teams, Patricia confirmed those duties will primarily fall to his coordinators, Jim Bob Cooter and Paul Pasqualoni.
"That's the way I think it should be done," Patricia said. "That's the way I was treated for all the years in New England."
Matt Patricia is getting close to filling out his coaching staff in Detroit. The Lions on Friday announced the addition of Derius Swinton as an offensive assistant.
Swinton has eight years of NFL experience as a special teams coach, including a year as the San Francisco 49ers coordinator (2016) and his most recent stint with the Chicago Bears.
The Detroit Lions got the head coach they wanted in Matt Patricia, who general manager Bob Quinn said can lead the franchise to "the next level."
But, was he the best new hire of the offseason? Not quite, writes Vinnie Iyer of the Sporting News. In a "strong class" new head coaches, Iyer on Tuesday ranked Patricia at No. 4 — right smack dab in the middle of the seven-man class.
Allen Park – Some analysts thought the decision would prevent Matt Patricia from ever getting a head coaching job, but almost one year to the day after wearing a T-shirt that depicted NFL commissioner Roger Goodell as a clown, Patricia was named the coach of the Detroit Lions.
Lions general manager Bob Quinn and president Rod Wood were both asked whether the issue came up during the interview process.
"It is not a concern at all," Quinn said. "And yes, we talked about it. I'd say very briefly."
Allen Park — If it wasn't clear before Matt Patricia's introductory press conference Wednesday afternoon, the new Detroit Lions coach definitively stated offensive Jim Bob Cooter would remain on staff.
"Jim Bob is on staff and he will be here," Patricia said. "Obviously, he's done a great job here with what he's been able to accomplish with (quarterback Matthew) Stafford and the offense.
Lions hire Pasqualoni to be Patricia’s defensive coordinator
ALLEN PARK, Mich. (AP) — The Detroit Lions have hired Paul Pasqualoni to be Matt Patricia's defensive coordinator.
The team announced the move Wednesday along with other additions to its coaching staff hours before Patricia was to have his first news conference as Detroit's coach later in the day.
Jim Bob Cooter was not mentioned in the morning release, but he is listed on the team's website as its returning offensive coordinator.
Minneapolis — Late in the first half of Super Bowl LII, the Philadelphia Eagles took a page out of Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter's playbook.
It's beginning to look like Matt Patricia will be the Lions' 27th head coach in team history.
In this week's special edition of Lions Lowdown, Bob Wojnowski, John Niyo and Justin Rogers take a closer look at the Patriots' defensive coordinator and they preview this weekend's NFL conference finals.
The Detroit Lions' running game has been a weak spot throughout former head coach Jim Caldwell's tenure, hitting rock bottom this season.
Never finishing higher than 28th in the league in rushing, the Lions finished last for the second time in Caldwell's four seasons in 2017.
Allen Park – The Detroit Lions are willing to let defensive coordinator Teryl Austin explore other opportunities, but apparently with some caveats.
According to ESPN.com, the Lions granted Austin the permission to meet with the Cincinnati Bengals for the team's defensive coordinator opening, but denied a similar request from the Green Bay Packers.
Lions interview Vrabel for coaching opening
DETROIT (AP) — The Detroit Lions have interviewed Houston Texans defensive coordinator Mike Vrabel for their coaching position.
Lions interview Austin, Cooter for head coaching job
DETROIT (AP) — The Detroit Lions have interviewed two of their current coordinators for their vacant head coaching job.
The Lions announced the interviews with defensive coordinator Teryl Austin and offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter on Tuesday, a day after coach Jim Caldwell was fired .
Allen Park — With a swift, decisive move, GM Bob Quinn just reset the Lions' standards and ratcheted the expectations. In some ways, that was the easy part. Now, the tough part — it's on Quinn himself to reach those standards.
Allen Park – Michael Roberts is taking his punishment like a man and looking to use his mistake as an opportunity to get better.
The Detroit Lions rookie tight end was suspended for the team's season-finale after missing a mandatory team meeting on Saturday.
"I slept a little longer than I expected," Roberts said.
While disappointed to end his rookie campaign on a sour note, he feels the punishment was fair.
Allen Park – Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford hasn't typically advocated for the job of one of his coaches, so when he does, it's meaningful.
On Monday morning, hours after coach Jim Caldwell was dismissed by the organization, Stafford made a pitch for the next coach to retain offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter.
Detroit — Lions offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter showcased some creative play-calling in the closing minutes of a 35-11 victory over the Green Bay Packers.
Attempting a 2-point conversion following the team's final touchdown, Cooter dialed up a play that saw quarterback Matthew Stafford as the receiving target on the play.
Allen Park — Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter wouldn't talk directly about the running game's struggles Thursday afternoon.
The Lions are last in the NFL in rushing yards per game (78.0), and tied for last in rushing yards per attempt (3.4). When the Lions lost on Sunday to the 6-9 Cincinnati Bengals, knocking them out of playoff contention, Lions running backs only ran for 80 yards on 21 carries, a 3.8-yard average.
Allen Park — Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford is on pace to be sacked more this season than any in his career, but it could be far worse.
Stafford has been dropped behind the line 43 times in 2017, two short of his career-high sack total. That's obviously rough, but his mobility within the pocket has helped him to avoid plenty more. According to Football Outsiders, Stafford has avoided 20 sacks by making tacklers miss in the backfield, more than any quarterback this season.
Allen Park — The legend of Lions offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter seems to touch every corner of the universe.
On Wednesday at the introductory press conference for the Quick Lane Bowl at Ford Field, where Duke will take on Northern Illinois on Dec. 26, it was revealed that Cooter's professional coaching career all started with a phone call from Duke coach David Cutcliffe to Peyton Manning.
Allen Park — Lions coordinators Jim Bob Cooter and Teryl Austin are being listed as top candidates for the New York Giants head-coaching opening, according to multiple oddsmakers.
The Giants fired coach Bob McAdoo, as well as general manager Jerry Reese, on Monday morning.
Allen Park — Before the season, Jim Bob Cooter boldly proclaimed the Detroit Lions' ground game would be improved.
"I know we're going to run the ball more efficiently," Cooter said in August. "I'm very confident of that. At the end of the day, I feel confident I have improved and I am improving, and that's part of the thing. Also, feel good about our players, how much they're working at getting the nuts and bolts, getting the fundamentals down."
Allen Park — There isn't much going right with the Detroit Lions' ground game, but if you're looking for a spark of hope, look no further than Theo Riddick, who has done well with his opportunities since the team's bye.
In the past five games, Riddick has carried the ball 27 times, averaging 4.5 yards per attempt. It's putting him in line for a bigger role down the stretch.
Allen Park – A little more than a year ago, Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter was so popular, fans started a mock presidential campaign. But by the midpoint of this season, the luster had worn off for those same fans.
His play-calling was labeled predictable, the offense wasn't living up to its potential and some wondered if he should actually be on the hot seat. But in recent weeks, Cooter's stock appears to be back on the rise.
Allen Park — With Dwayne Washington sidelined with a hip injury, the Lions will likely go back to Zach Zenner as the third running back in the rotation this week against the Chicago Bears. But what about Tion Green?
The undrafted rookie has yet to be active for a regular season game this season, but offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter expressed confidence in Green's ability to get the job done if needed.
Allen Park — Is Jim Bob Cooter a candidate for the vacant University of Tennessee coaching job? The Detroit Lions offensive coordinator wasn't interested in talking about it when asked during his Thursday news conference.
"I'm locked and loaded on the Chicago Bears," Cooter said, referencing the Lions' upcoming opponent. "I'll watch on TV."
Asked if he would consider the job or another head coaching position in the offseason. Cooter reiterated, "I'm focused on the Chicago Bears."
Before he was an assistant coach in the NFL, Lions offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter was a backup quarterback at Tennessee.
Could Cooter return to his alma mater? With Tennessee firing head coach Butch Jones on Sunday, the Sporting News writes the Lions offensive coordinator would be a good fit in Knoxville, listing him as one of its nine top candidates for the head job with the Volunteers.
Cooter played in just three games while at Tennessee, but quickly has made a name for himself in the NFL.
Allen Park — On one hand, Lions offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter notes he's aware of his team's tendencies and doesn't want to be predictable. On the other, the Lions aren't using running back Ameer Abdullah on third downs, despite the back's proven abilities as a pass-catcher.
Allen Park — The bye week in the NFL is a time for self-healing.
But it's also a time for self-reflection. Or self-scouting, as coaches like to call it.
And as the Lions get ready to jump back into the fray — and into the prime-time spotlight for Sunday night's game against the Pittsburgh Steelers at Ford Field — they insist they're ready to do so with a greater sense of self-awareness.
Allen Park – Ameer Abdullah and Theo Riddick are both dynamic, versatile playmakers, but for some reason, the Detroit Lions have been reluctant to have the two running backs on the field at the same time.
Through six games, the two haven't shared the field. In fact, the Lions haven't run any two-back formations this season, unless you count the random usage of a defensive player as a fullback.
Lions Preview Capsule
New faces: OT Rick Wagner, OG T.J. Lang, OT Greg Robinson, DE Cornelius Washington, rookie LB Jarrad Davis, rookie CB Teez Tabor.
Key losses: OT Riley Reiff, OG Larry Warford, LB DeAndre Levy, DE Kerry Hyder, WR Anquan Boldin.

Magnolia golf coach Jim Bob Jackson saw it coming. He has followed Halle Whitney for years, so he realized her potential and knew she'd join with reigning Class 5A individual champ Ava Schwienteck to form the backbone of a state championship-contending team. Still, the freshman's dramatic rise to No. 1 last week was a sight to behold. Whitney, who was third at the District 20-5A tournament and seventh at the Region III-5A tourney, won a two-hole playoff against Mansfield Lake Ridge's Caitlyn...

Lions offense struggling in closing stretch
ALLEN PARK, Mich. (AP) — The Detroit Lions are struggling offensively at the worst possible time.
A series of injuries has caused problems for coach Jim Caldwell and offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter as the Lions (9-5) try to finish off their first division title in 23 years.
Last Sunday against the New York Giants, Matthew Stafford wasn't able to put together another fourth-quarter rally in a 17-6 loss, and now the Lions are headed to Dallas for a Monday night matchup with the Cowboys (12-2).
Lions roll into Motor City against Titans still on a roll
DETROIT (AP) — The Detroit Lions and Tennessee Titans have familiar looks.
Detroit opened with a 39-35 victory at Indianapolis, its seventh win in nine games dating to last year.
The Titans, meanwhile, started the season with a loss at home to Minnesota for their fifth straight setback since last December.
The Lions seem to have a shot at extending their successful stretch against Tennessee on Sunday in their home opener.
