Baltusrol to host Women’s PGA and PGA Championship
KILDEER, Ill. (AP) — The PGA Championship is returning to Baltusrol, and the Women's PGA is going to the fabled New Jersey course for the first time.
The announcement Saturday marks the second time in as many years that the PGA of America scheduled majors for men and women at the same course. The PGA Championship and Women's PGA also will be at Aronimink over the next decade.
The Women's PGA goes to Baltusrol in 2023. The men will be there in 2029.
PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Webb Simpson navigated his way through a few mistakes but not too much stress to win The Players Championship on Sunday.
Staked to a seven-shot lead, no one got closer than four shots of Simpson, even after a double bogey on the 18th hole when his only concern was finishing the hole at the TPC Sawgrass. He closed with a 1-over 73 for a four-shot victory, his biggest title since the 2012 U.S. Open at Olympic Club.
Palm Harbor, Fla. — Tiger Woods discovered how tough Innisbrook can be in a swirling wind, and he was up to the task.
Woods smacked his hands into an oak as he let loose of the club during a bold escape from the trees, came within inches of an ace on the next hole, and most importantly was among 27 players – just under 20 percent of the field — to break par Thursday in the Valspar Championship.

MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. — The Sacred Heart football team snapped a four-game losing streak with a 21-14 victory over Robert Morris Saturday afternoon at Joe Walton Stadium.
The Pioneers (3-4, 1-1 NEC) trailed 6-0 at halftime and scored all of their points in the fourth quarter.
Jordan Meachum put Sacred Heart on the board with a 14-yard touchdown run and Kevin Duke’s 19-yard touchdown pass to Byron Barney tied the game at 14-14.
The PGA Championship begins today at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, N.C. Jimmy Walker is the defending champion. Here’s a look at the golfers to watch this week on the par-71 course that will play 7,600 yards.
Jason Day ‘hungry,’ eager to return to top of golf world
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Jason Day's swagger — and his motivation — have returned.
"I'm hungry again — and I'm looking forward to trying to beat these guys," Day said Wednesday on the eve of the 99th PGA Championship.
Day is in the midst of what he called a "very poor season" with only two top 10 finishes and no wins in 15 starts. But the world's former No. 1 player feels like he's about to turn the corner after finishing tied for 24th last week at Bridgestone.
PGA Championship at a glance
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Facts and figures for the PGA Championship:
AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) — Dustin Johnson arrived at Augusta National on quite a roll, having won his last three tournaments.
He never even took a shot at the first major of the year.
The world's No. 1-ranked player was forced to withdraw from the Masters on Thursday because of a lower back injury suffered less than 24 hours earlier in a freak fall at the home he was renting for the week.
"I want to play," Johnson said. "I just can't swing."
PGA champ Jimmy Walker coping with mononucleosis
AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) — PGA champion Jimmy Walker says he has been coping with mononucleosis that has contributed to his lethargic play.
Walker captured his first major last year with a wire-to-wire victory in the PGA Championship, contended in the second FedEx Cup playoff event and went 1-2 in his matches at Hazeltine when the United States won the Ryder Cup.
He has spent most of this year trying to figure out why he has felt so sluggish and finally was diagnosed with mono.

Johnson faces a major group in Match Play
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Dustin Johnson has a trio of major champions in his way at the Dell Technologies Match Play.
Johnson is the No. 1 seed for the first time in Match Play, which starts Wednesday at Austin Country Club. The three players assigned to his round-robin group are PGA champion Jimmy Walker, two-time major champion Martin Kaymer and former U.S. Open champion Webb Simpson.
Groups were determined by pulling one name from each of four 16-man segments based on the world ranking.
MEXICO CITY (AP) — Rory McIlroy had more trouble with his stomach than his ribs. The golf was just fine.
Playing for the first time in seven weeks because of a rib injury, McIlroy coped with a bad stomach and the high altitude with a 3-under 68 that left him one shot out of a six-way tie for the lead as the Mexico Championship made a strong debut Thursday.
Moore, Thomas share lead at Kapalua
KAPALUA, Hawaii (AP) — The surf, the sun and endless views of island paradise can make the SBS Tournament of Champions feel like a working vacation. Ryan Moore and Justin Thomas were among those putting the emphasis on work at Kapalua.
Walker enjoys the views and his game, takes lead at Kapalua
KAPALUA, Hawaii (AP) — With a chance to take the lead at Kapalua, Jimmy Walker missed in the one spot he was trying to avoid.
The way he was hitting his wedges Thursday, it really didn't matter.
Walker hit a tough pitch to a tight pin on the elevated green to 3 feet for birdie on the par-5 15th, and he nearly holed a lob wedge from 78 yards on the final hole for an 8-under 65 that gave him a two-shot lead in the SBS Tournament of Champions.
Attack best form of defense for leading Danes at World Cup
MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — Denmark has vowed to go on the offensive in the final round of the World Cup, believing that to be the best strategy to protect a four-shot lead earned in Saturday's third round.
The title is tantalizingly within reach for Soren Kjeldsen and Thorbjorn Olesen after a two-under 70 in the third round foursomes propelled them to 14-under at Kingston Heath.
The Latest: Euros mix and match pairs as Americans stand pat
CHASKA, Minn. (AP) — The Latest on the Ryder Cup (all times local):
The late comeback that pulled Europe within 5-3 after Round 1 bought captain Darren Clarke enough breathing room to get the last two of his six rookies on the course at the start of Round 2.
Ryder Cup gets underway with Spieth, Reed vs. Stenson, Rose
CHASKA, Minn. (AP) — The 41st Ryder Cup is off to a rollicking start at Hazeltine.
With a rowdy gallery serving as the backdrop, Jordan Spieth and Patrick Reed led things off for the Americans against Henrik Stenson and Justin Rose for Europe, which is looking for its fourth straight Ryder Cup victory.
Reed hit the first tee shot for the United States, which has lost eight of the last 10 in the biannual showdown. The first matchup was all square after the first hole.

Casey trying to end a long PGA Tour victory drought
NORTON, Mass. (AP) — Paul Casey is going after his first PGA Tour victory in seven years at the Deutsche Bank Championship, and he has plenty of names behind him to consider in the Labor Day finish.
Brian Harman is three shots behind. PGA champion Jimmy Walker is another shot back. Rory McIlroy, six shots behind, is still in the mix.
NORTON, Mass. (AP) — Paul Casey finished with a birdie and an eagle over the last three holes Sunday for a 5-under 66 and a three-shot lead going into the Labor Day finish at the Deutsche Bank Championship.
Casey hit 7-iron into 5 feet for birdie on the par-3 16th, and then he drilled a 3-iron into the swirling wind on the par-5 18th that worked out perfectly. It landed just left of the green, caught a ridge and rolled to 30 inches for the eagle.
NORTON, Mass. (AP) — Kevin Chappell did just about everything right Saturday, even when making his lone bogey, and shot 7-under 64 for a one-shot lead in the Deutsche Bank Championship and another chance at his first PGA Tour victory.
Chappell pitched in for eagle on No. 7 and made a 35-foot birdie putt on the next hole. Even better was the 15-foot bogey putt on the 13th hole, and his great escape from a bad shot when trying to lay up on the par-5 18th.
His Cup runneth over: Love has many choices for Ryder squad
NEW YORK (AP) — Ryder Cup captain Davis Love III has four weeks to find four players to fill out his U.S. team, and there won't be a lack of information.
And to hear him Monday morning, there won't be a lack of players.
"Anybody in the top 100 has to be our radar because a guy could get hot the next two weeks and move himself to the Tour Championship and be in the running for the FedEx Cup," Love said. "And I get to pick him on Sunday night."
Fowler plays his way off US Ryder Cup team
FARMINGDALE, N.Y. (AP) — Rickie Fowler lost the lead, the tournament and a guaranteed spot on the Ryder Cup team.
Right when it looked as though Zach Johnson had played his way off the U.S. team, Fowler squandered a chance to earn the eighth and final automatic spot when he shot 39 on the back nine at The Barclays, capped off by two bogeys and a double bogey over his last four holes.
"Very disappointing," Fowler said. "Just made a couple bad swings at the wrong time."
Reed all about winning over Ryder Cup
FARMINGDALE, N.Y. (AP) — No one with a chance to make the U.S. team for the Ryder Cup wants to talk about it.
Patrick Reed is getting to the point where he doesn't have to.
The start of the FedEx Cup playoffs also was the end of Ryder Cup qualifying, and while five Americans already have clinched a spot on the team — Dustin Johnson, Jordan Spieth, Phil Mickelson, Jimmy Walker and Brooks Koepka — the other three automatic spots were up for grabs at The Barclays.
FedEx Cup begins, Ryder Cup qualifying ends
RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — Darren Clarke got an extra week to start mulling over his three captain's picks for Europe in the Ryder Cup because the top nine already are set. Matthew Fitzpatrick finished fifth in the Czech Masters and locked up no worse than the final spot.
Davis Love III has a little more time, and he likely will need it.
Majors behind him, Rickie Fowler tries to salvage season
SPRINGFIELD, N.J. (AP) — Rickie Fowler is short on majors, not on class.
He returned to the 18th green at Baltusrol after an exhausting day because he wanted to congratulate the winner. He is friendly with Jimmy Walker and Jason Day, though there is a special connection with Walker. Both work with Butch Harmon. They were partners in all four matches in the Ryder Cup at Gleneagles, and two matches in the Presidents Cup at South Korea. They were housemates at Royal...
SPRINGFIELD, N.J. — Although this will come as news to the International Olympic Committee, the major championship season for golf is over.
It concluded yesterday on the soggy links at Baltusrol, where for the fourth time this year a major was grasped by a first-time winner, in this case, Jimmy Walker. Walker led the 98th PGA from first day to last stroke, although his victory was not without a fight.
Defending champion Jason Day gave Walker more of a battle than...
SPRINGFIELD, N.J. (AP) — Jimmy Walker had champagne in his glass and the Wanamaker Trophy at his side. Still unopened is a bottle of Chateau Margaux that Butch Harmon has kept in his Las Vegas wine cellar for such a moment as this.
Walker gave him the $1,200 bottle four years ago when Harmon refused payment for their first of many lessons. Harmon was so confident in the 37-year-old Texan that he pledged not to open it until Walker won a major.

Jimmy Walker is the fourth first-time winner in as many majors this year after earning a one-stroke victory over defending champ Jason Day at the PGA Championship at Baltusrol Golf Club. Walker closed with a 3-under 67 for a 14-under total, playing his final two rounds yesterday due to Saturday's rain. Daniel Summerhays...
SPRINGFIELD, N.J. (AP) — One of the last people who would have predicted Jimmy Walker's win in the PGA Championship at Baltusrol was the man himself.
Though Walker felt some improvement last week at the Canadian Open, he'd struggled much of the year, particularly in the majors. And he'd never really come close to winning in golf's biggest events.
So after a pressure-packed par on the final hole gave Walker a one-stroke win over defending champion Jason Day on...
Jimmy Walker wins a marathon at the PGA Championship
SPRINGFIELD, N.J. (AP) — Jimmy Walker did everything required of a major champion on the longest final day in 64 years at a PGA Championship.
And then Jason Day made him do a little bit more.
Walker was standing over an 8-foot birdie putt on the par-5 17th hole Sunday when he heard a roar that caused him to twice back off the putt. It was Day, the defending champion and world's No. 1 player, down to his last chance and delivering with a 2-iron that landed in front...
SPRINGFIELD, N.J. — Baltusrol now holds more than one memory for Jimmy Walker and his caddie Andy Sanders.
Sixteen years ago, the pair met during a practice round at the 10th tee on the Upper Course at Baltusrol Golf Course at the 2000 U.S. Amateur.
Sunday night, the two were enjoying Walker’s first major victory.
“We brought it up earlier in the week and we were hitting balls pretty much in the same spot, so we talked about it a little bit,” Sanders...
SPRINGFIELD – All across his final, mud-caked round of major golf Sunday, Jimmy Walker chased the biggest galleries at Baltusrol, only catching up to the large, moving contingent of raucous New Jersey fans on the tournament’s final hole.
A wire-to-wire lead hadn’t been enough to elevate the little-known American to crowd favorite. That crown was being worn by Jason Day, not just the world’s top-ranked golfer and defending PGA champion, not only the man directly in...
Big Ryder Cup jumps for Walker, Koepka
SPRINGFIELD, N.J. (AP) — Jimmy Walker was running out of time to make the Ryder Cup team for the second time in a row.
Winning the PGA Championship took care of that.
Walker went from No. 29 in the U.S. standings all the way up to No. 4 because of the double points at a major. With only four events remaining, and with a major championship on his side, he is virtually a lock to be at Hazeltine on Sept. 30.
He went 1-1-3 at Gleneagles as a Ryder Cup rookie,...
SPRINGFIELD, N.J. — The stars never aligned this magnificently for Boerne’s Jimmy Walker.
In the longest final day at the PGA Championship in 64 years, Walker produced three big birdies on the back nine at Baltusrol and held his nerve against the No. 1 player in the world to close with a 3-under 67 for a one-shot victory over defending champion Jason Day.
Walker provided a little too much drama at the end.
After watching Day make a 15-foot eagle putt on...
This PGA Championship was an odd ball
SPRINGFIELD, N.J. (AP) — The third and fourth rounds were going on at the same time and with different rules. There was so much rain that there was a worker with a squeegee positioned near every green. The final putts were made in what some would call the dark. There was no re-pairing after the third round and the greens weren't even rolled, let along cut. Oh yeah, on Friday they put the cup on No. 10 in the wrong place.
This was the PGA Championship. This was a major....
Jason Day finishes 2nd in PGA Championship title defense
SPRINGFIELD, N.J. (AP) — As he walked down the 18th fairway after setting himself up for a potential eagle, Jason Day searched for a scoreboard. When he saw he was three shots behind Jimmy Walker, Day flipped his putter in the air and didn't catch it as it dropped to the ground.
He pretty much knew he wasn't catching Walker, either, in the PGA Championship.
The defending champion had said, after completing his first 18 holes on a marathon closing Sunday at...
SPRINGFIELD, N.J. Five-time PGA Tour winner Jimmy Walker made it No. 6 and his first major title with a three-foot par putt on the final hole to win the PGA Championship and beat defending winner Jason Day by a stroke.
Days eagle 3 on Baltusrol Golf Clubs par-5 18th hole forced Walker to make no worse than par to win that first major. He did, making it an adventure by hitting his long second shot into the rough right of a greenside bunker. He chipped well past the hole 33...
SPRINGFIELD, N.J. (AP) — The Latest on the PGA Championship (all times local):
Jimmy Walker, who has been in the lead of the PGA Championship after each of the first three rounds, followed a front nine of all pars with birdies on Nos. 10 and 11 to take a two-shot lead over defending champion Jason Day.
Walker's birdies put him at 13 under for the tournament. He and nine others had to play their entire third round Sunday morning after heavy rains...
Springfield, N.J. — Jimmy Walker overcame a few wild tee shots with four birdies on the back nine for a 2-under 68 and a one-shot lead over defending champion Jason Day going into the final round of the rain-plagued PGA Championship.
This already was shaping up as a major like no other.
Even as Walker and Day were finishing their rounds, the fourth round already had begun on rain-soaked Baltusrol. The PGA of America chose not to redo pairings for the final round...
