Anderson advances to Maharashtra Open quarterfinals
PUNE, India (AP) — Kevin Anderson reached the quarterfinals of Maharashtra Open by beating Laslo Djere 7-6 (3), 7-6 (6) on Wednesday.
The top-seeded South African, who lost to Gilles Simon in last year's final, hit 20 aces and saved a set point in the second set.
Anderson will next face Jaume Munar. The seventh-seeded Spaniard defeated Simone Bolelli 7-5, 6-0.
Karlovic advances at Maharashtra Open
PUNE, India (AP) — Ivo Karlovic beat an opponent more than two decades younger than him on Tuesday with a 6-4, 7-5 win over Felix Auger-Aliassime in the first round of the Maharashtra Open.
The 39-year-old Croat served 13 aces against his 18-year-old Canadian opponent. His next opponent is Evgeny Donskoy of Russia.
LONDON (AP) — After seven years of struggles, Rafael Nadal is finally looking like a contender again at Wimbledon.
The top-ranked Spaniard is back in the quarterfinals at the All England Club for the first time since 2011 — and playing a lot like the man who reached his fifth final that year.
"It's true it has been a while," Nadal said about his return to the last eight. "But when I come here, I come here thinking that I can do a good result, no?"
Top-seeded Ramos-Vinolas reaches 2nd round in Marrakech
MARRAKECH, Morocco (AP) — Top-seeded Albert Ramos-Vinolas was near-perfect on his first serve to dispatch Moroccan wild-card entry Amine Ahouda 6-1, 6-2 in just over an hour to reach the second round of the Grand Prix Hassan II on Tuesday.
Ramos-Vinolas of Spain took 20 of 22 points on his first serve to win in 68 minutes. He reached the final in Marrakech in 2012 when he lost to compatriot Pablo Andujar.
Top seed Sock bows out as ASB Classic
AUCKLAND, New Zealand (AP) — Top-seed and defending champion Jack Sock bowed out of the ATP Tour's ASB Classic in its second round Wednesday, beaten 6-3, 6-3 by unseeded German Peter Gojowczyk on a bad day for American players.
Sock's compatriots, third-seeded Sam Querrey, fourth-seeded John Isner and unseeded Steve Johnson, were also beaten in second round matches.
Qualifier Ojeda Lara beats Vesely in straight sets
PUNE, India (AP) — Spanish qualifier Ricardo Ojeda Lara upset sixth-seeded Jiri Vesely 6-3, 7-6 (5) Monday in the first round of the Maharashtra Open.
It was Ojeda Lara's first win over a player ranked in the top 100.
Pablo Andujar, playing his first tour-level match since 2016 due to an elbow injury, made an early exit when Nicolas Jarry beat the Spaniard 6-7 (4), 6-4, 7-5.
Harrison withstands Anderson’s serve, advances at Japan Open
TOKYO (AP) — Ryan Harrison withstood the big serve of Kevin Anderson and advanced to the quarterfinals at the Japan Open on Wednesday by beating the U.S. Open finalist 6-3, 1-6, 7-6 (2).
Anderson landed 24 aces in the match, but the 52nd-ranked American overcame the barrage and will next face top-seeded Marin Cilic.
Czechs without Berdych for Davis Cup playoff at Netherlands
PRAGUE (AP) — The Czech Republic will have to do without Tomas Berdych at next week's Davis Cup playoff series at the Netherlands.
Berdych, who helped the country win the 2012 and '13 Davis Cup titles, has been focusing on the ATP tour. Without Berdych, the Czechs lost 4-1 to Australia in the first round.
Czech Republic captain Jaroslav Navratil will also miss veteran Radek Stepanek for the Sept. 15-17 series on indoor clay court at the Sportcampus Zuiderpark in the Hague.
Qualifier De Schepper upsets Paire at Croatia Open
UMAG, Croatia (AP) — Qualifier Kenny De Schepper upset another Frenchman, seventh-seeded Benoit Paire, to advance to the second round of the Croatia Open on Tuesday with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 win.
Paire struggled with his serve, producing a total of 11 double faults, and was broken eight times by his 148th-ranked opponent.
Eighth-seeded Jiri Vesely of the Czech Republic made the second round after a 6-4, 6-0 victory over Norbert Gombos of Slovakia.
PARIS (AP) — Jack Sock went to the island of Mallorca ahead of the French Open, planning to train with Rafael Nadal. Didn't work out that way.
"It was supposed to be with Rafa," Sock lamented, "until he won Monte Carlo and Barcelona and every tournament he plays."

MARRAKECH, Morocco (AP) — Borna Coric of Croatia rallied past second-seeded Albert Ramos-Vinolas of Spain 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 to reach the semifinals of the Grand Prix Hassan II on Friday.
Coric, advancing to his first ATP semifinal since this clay event last year, broke Ramos-Vinolas three times to prevail in 2 1/2 hours.
To reach the final again, the 20-year-old Coric will have to get past Jiri Vesely, who defeated No. 5 seed Paolo Lorenzi 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (5).
Top-seeded Dimitrov loses opening match in Morocco
MARRAKECH, Morocco (AP) — Top-seeded Grigor Dimitrov lost his opening match at the Grand Prix Hassan II, bowing out against veteran Tommy Robredo 6-4, 1-6, 6-1 on Thursday.
The 34-year-old Robredo, now ranked 385th, saved seven of nine break points and converted all three chances he got to win on Dimitrov's serve.
Robredo will face Benoit Paire in his first tour-level quarterfinal match since he reached the semifinals at Shenzhen Open in 2015. Paire beat Radu Albot 6-2, 6-2.
Iguana causes a racket at Miami Open for several minutes
KEY BISCAYNE, Fla. (AP) — An iguana caused quite a racket during a professional tennis match at the Miami Open, perching atop a scoreboard and then scurrying across the court.
The rather large reptile showed up at Court 1 midway through the final set of Jiri Vesely's 6-7 (5), 6-3, 7-5 victory over Tommy Haas on Wednesday, delaying play for several minutes.
At first, they tried to continue with the match. But action was halted as attempts were made to remove the iguana.
American Taylor Fritz earns 1st win at Indian Wells
INDIAN WELLS, Calif. (AP) — Taylor Fritz earned his first win at the BNP Paribas Open on Friday, beating Benoit Paire of France 6-3, 6-2 in the first round.
The 19-year-old American is trying to return to the top 100 in the ATP Tour world rankings after rising to No. 53 last August. Fritz moved on to a second-round match against sixth-seeded Marin Cilic.
Australia beats Czech Republic 4-1 in World Group tie
MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — Australia split Sunday's concluding reverse singles matches with the Czech Republic to complete a comfortable 4-1 win in their Davis Cup first round tie that set up a compelling quarter-final meeting with the United States.
Australian debutant Jordan Thompson beat Jan Satral 7-6 (7-5), 6-2 before Jiri Vesely gained a consolation win for the visitors when he defeated Sam Groth 3-6 7-5 6-3 at the Kooyong tennis club in suburban Melbourne.

PRAGUE (AP) — Weakened by the absence of three players, the Czech Republic is set to face Australia in the first round of Davis Cup with two rookies.
The Czechs will miss No. 10-ranked Tomas Berdych, who announced this month he wouldn't be available because he wanted to focus on the ATP tour.
Czech Republic captain Jaroslav Navratil will also miss Lukas Rosol and Adam Pavlasek for the Feb. 3-5 series on an outdoor hard court at the Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club in Melbourne.

Bautista-Agut withdraws from ASB Classic
AUCKLAND, New Zealand (AP) — Defending champion Robert Bautista-Agut of Spain has withdrawn from the ASB Tennis Classic without playing a match, citing a stomach virus.
The top-seeded Bautista-Agut had a bye in the first round and was due to play 2015 champion Jiri Vesely in his second round match on Wednesday. But the 28-year-old Spaniard, ranked 13 and the winner of the recent Chennai Open, informed organizers he was unable to play.

SHENZHEN, China (AP) — Jiri Vesely served 13 aces to beat Pablo Andujar 6-2, 7-6 (8) and advance to the second round of the Shenzhen Open on Tuesday.
Vesely lost just six points on his first serve in his first match since the US Open, where he withdrew with a left arm injury before his second round match against top-seeded Novak Djokovic.
Vesely next meets Inigo Cervantes of Spain, who defeated Akira Santillan of Japan 6-2, 7-6 (5).
