Shapovalov opens season with a loss at ASB Classic
AUCKLAND, New Zealand (AP) — Denis Shapovalov opened his season with a loss on Monday, falling to Joao Sousa 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 in the first round of the ASB Classic.
The seventh-seeded Canadian, who is considered to be a rising star on the ATP Tour, made 78 unforced errors and finished with eight double-faults. Sousa had 46 unforced errors.
"Denis is a great player and I knew he was playing great tennis," Sousa said. "It was the first match of the year for both of us, which is not easy."
Djokovic beats Sousa in straight sets at Paris Masters
PARIS (AP) — Novak Djokovic began his bid for a record-extending fifth Paris Masters title with a 7-5, 6-1 win against Joao Sousa in the second round on Tuesday, and lent a helping hand to a spectator in the process.
Serving for the match at 5-1, Djokovic handed a towel to a man in the crowd who seemed unwell and who wiped his forehead with it.
"It seemed he was sweating and he seemed dizzy, so he just needed help," Djokovic said. "I just gave him the towel."
Gasquet will face Sock after beating Shapovalov in Paris
PARIS (AP) — In a battle of different generations, home favorite Richard Gasquet beat Canadian teenager Denis Shapovalov in straight sets to reach the second round of the Paris Masters, where he will face American defending champion Jack Sock.
The 32-year-old Gasquet was 3-0 down in the opening set but rallied to win 6-4, 7-6 (3) on Monday.
Another Frenchman was safely through after Adrian Mannarino beat compatriot Ugo Humbert 6-4, 6-2. He next plays 10th-seeded Kei Nishikori of Japan.
Fognini going for 4th ATP title of the year in Chengdu
CHENGDU, China (AP) — Top-seeded Fabio Fognini reached his fourth ATP final of the year when he beat Taylor Fritz of the United States 6-7 (5), 6-0, 6-3 at the Chengdu Open on Saturday.
If Fognini beats Australian qualifier Bernard Tomic in the final on Sunday, he will become the first Italian to win four ATP titles in a season.
After dropping the first set in a tiebreak, Fognini cruised the rest of the way, breaking Fritz six times over the last two sets.
Chung, Mannarino both upset at Chengdu Open
CHENDU, China (AP) — Second-seeded Hyeon Chung and fourth-seeded Adrian Mannarino both lost Wednesday at the Chengdu Open.
Canadian lucky loser Felix Auger-Aliassime advanced to the quarterfinals by beating Chung 7-6 (2), 5-7, 6-4, while Malek Jaziri upset Mannarino 6-3, 7-6 (5).
Auger-Aliassime saved five of eight break points in the match.

Thiem reaches quarterfinals at Lyon Open
LYON, France (AP) — Top-seeded Dominic Thiem defeated Roberto Carballes Baena 6-2, 6-4 on Tuesday to reach the Lyon Open quarterfinals.
Thiem did not face a break point and won 80 percent of the points on his serve.
Thiem, a serious contender at the French Open which starts on Sunday, will next be up against Guillermo Garcia-Lopez, who beat Calvin Hemery 7-6 (4), 6-3 at the clay-court event.
ESTORIL, Portugal (AP) — Joao Sousa beat Frances Tiafoe 6-4, 6-4 in the Estoril Open final on Sunday to become the first Portuguese-born player to win an ATP tour event on home soil.
Sousa had four aces and broke his American opponent's serve four times on the outdoor clay court.
It was the 29-year-old Sousa's third career title and his first since 2015.
ESTORIL, Portugal (AP) — Frances Tiafoe of the United States upset defending champion Pablo Carreno 6-2, 6-3 to reach the Estoril Open final on Saturday.
The 20-year-old Tiafoe will face local favorite Joao Sousa in Sunday's final after the Portuguese beat Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-4, 1-6, 7-6 (4).
Tiafoe converted four of seven break chances to beat the second-seeded Carreno on the outdoor clay court.
Krajinovic, Khachanov reach 2nd round of Open 13
MARSEILLE, France (AP) — Eighth-seeded Serb Filip Krajinovic and ninth-seeded Russian Karen Khachanov advanced to the second round of the Open 13 on Tuesday.
Krajinovic rallied to beat Joao Sousa of Portugal 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 — with both players hitting six aces and dropping serve three times— while Khachanov had 15 aces in a 6-3, 7-6 (2) win against Ruben Bemelmans of Belgium.
Del Potro beats Sousa to begin quest for 3rd Basel title
BASEL, Switzerland (AP) — Two-time Swiss Indoors champion Juan Martin del Porto beat Joao Sousa 6-1, 4-6, 6-1 to advance to the second round on Wednesday.
The fourth-seeded Del Potro dominated with his serve and sent down nine aces and 19 service winners against the 60th-ranked Portuguese.
Del Potro won back-to-back titles at Basel in 2012-13, both times beating hometown favorite Roger Federer in the final.
Kohlschreiber beats Sousa for Generali Open title
KITZBUEHEL, Austria (AP) — Philipp Kohlschreiber won his eighth career ATP tour title by defeating Joao Sousa of Portugal 6-3, 6-4 in the final of the Generali Open on Saturday.
The 47th-ranked German rallied from a break down in both sets and won five of the last six games to close out the win at the final clay-court event of the season.
Kohlschreiber's win came one week after he pulled out of his semifinal in Hamburg with a thigh injury.
KITZBUEHEL, Austria (AP) — Defending champion Paolo Lorenzi and top-seeded Pablo Cuevas both lost in the second round of the Generali Open on Wednesday.
Third-seeded Lorenzi won the opening set and led 4-2 in the second before going down 6-7 (5), 6-4, 6-1 against Joao Sousa of Portugal.
Last year at the clay-court event in the Austrian Alps, the Italian became the oldest first-time winner of an ATP event at 34 years, seven months.
GENEVA (AP) — Second-seeded Kei Nishikori of Japan eased into the Geneva Open quarterfinals, beating Mikhail Kukushkin of Kazakhstan 6-4, 6-3 on Tuesday.
Ranked No. 9, Nishikori took a wild card entry after a wrist injury affected his clay-court season and did not drop serve against the 88th-ranked Kukushkin.
Nishikori clinched the second-round match with a well-placed forehand from the baseline.
ESTORIL, Portugal (AP) — Fifth-seeded Juan Martin del Potro beat Yuichi Sugita of Japan 6-1, 6-3 in the first round of the Estoril Open on Tuesday.
The former U.S. Open champion hit eight aces and broke Sugita four times to ease to the win in his clay-court debut for the season.

MONTE CARLO, Monaco (AP) — Tenth-seeded David Goffin won an all-Belgian contest to reach the second round of the Monte Carlo Masters on Sunday as the first big tournament of the clay court season got underway.
Goffin broke Steve Darcis five times and needed just 72 minutes to post a 6-2, 6-1 win at the Country Club.
SAO PAULO (AP) — Six shelter dogs looking to be adopted are playing fetch at the Brazil Open in Sao Paulo, giving tennis fans a demonstration of their ball-retrieving skills.

Sock beats Sousa to win ASB Classic
AUCKLAND, New Zealand (AP) — Fourth-seeded American Jack Sock made amends for the disappointment of a year ago when he beat Joao Sousa of Portugal 6-3, 5-7, 6-3 in Saturday's final to win the ASB Tennis Classic.
Sock also reached the tournament final in 2016 but had to pull out of the title match due to illness.
Qualifier Copil beats 6th-seeded Sousa in European Open
ANTWERP, Belgium (AP) — Qualifier Marius Copil had nine aces as he upset sixth-seeded Joao Sousa of Portugal 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 in the first round of the European Open on Tuesday.
The 198-ranked Romanian also beat the 33rd-ranked Sousa on indoor hard courts in Stockholm, Sweden two years ago.
Copil converted his four break-point chances and next faces Steve Darcis of Belgium or Frenchman Benoit Paire.
Marin Cilic, David Goffin advance to Japan Open semifinals
TOKYO (AP) — Marin Cilic and David Goffin advanced to the semifinals of the Japan Open on Friday, and they will play each other for a spot in the final.
The fifth-seeded Goffin rallied to beat Joao Sousa 1-6, 7-5, 6-2, while the fourth-seeded Cilic beat injury-plagued Juan Monaco 7-5, 6-1.
Goffin beat Cilic in Indian Wells early this year, and then again in a Davis Cup match for Belgium against Croatia. Those are their only two career meetings.
