CHICAGO (AP) — Michigan State and Ohio State each placed two players on the preseason all-Big Ten team announced Thursday.
Junior running back J.K. Dobbins and defensive end Chase Young were...
Big Ten: Northwestern’s Pat Fitzgerald voted coach of year
ROSEMONT, Ill. (AP) — Northwestern's Pat Fitzgerald is the unanimous choice for Big Ten coach of the year.
The conference on Tuesday announced half its postseason awards based on voting by coaches and media. Fitzgerald led the Wildcats (8-4) to the West Division title after going winless in nonconference play and losing several starters to injuries.
Spartans lean on Buckeye Joe Bachie for Ohio State game
EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) — When No. 24 Michigan State hosts No. 8 Ohio State, the Spartans will be leaning on an Ohio guy.
Middle linebacker Joe Bachie spearheads Michigan State's top-ranked defense. He is the team's leading tackler and an unquestioned leader. His work ethic and preparation are exemplary.
In fact, the player from Brook Park, Ohio, reminds Spartans coach Mark Dantonio of a Buckeyes star from the 1980s.
Spartans getting a lift from Lombardi
EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) — When Rocky Lombardi took the field as Michigan State's starting quarterback last weekend, it was another example of how this season has turned out a lot different from what the Spartans envisioned.
Then Lombardi guided his team to a victory over Purdue, and by game's end, the Spartans were feeling a bit better about themselves.
No. 24 Spartans have ‘chip’ back with No. 6 Michigan looming
EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) — After upsetting Penn State on the road last weekend, Michigan State feels it has a bit of its identity back.
Just in time for the annual clash with rival Michigan.
"Last week we brought the chip back and that's just something you can never lose, and same thing with the underdog thing and how they think of us," linebacker Joe Bachie said. "Never lose it. We understand what's at stake. It's a rivalry game."
Bob Wojnowski, Matt Charboneau and Angelique Chengelis talk about spring football and the latest news with Mark Dantonio's Spartans and Jim Harbaugh's Wolverines.

Throughout Mark Dantonio's tenure at Michigan State, the Spartans have had a number of great linebackers, and Ohio has provided a good number of those talented players with Denicos Allen, Greg Jones and currently Joe Bachie among the notables.
In the 2019 recruiting cycle, the Spartans have already gone back into Ohio and offered a number of the state's top linebacking prospects.
The most recent of those offers went to Clayton Northmont's Jestin Jacobs.
East Lansing — Forget the piles of snow still lining the edge of the Michigan State practice fields.
It was the first practice of the spring on Tuesday afternoon, and it felt like it, both in terms of temperature and in the moods of the Spartans.
East Lansing — After completing the biggest turnaround in program history, there will be plenty of high expectations heading into the 2018 season for Michigan State.
The Big Ten remains undefeated in its bowl games.
Not everybody is hoping it stays that way — and, yes, we're looking at you, Sparty.
Some Michigan State players took to Twitter this week to celebrate the Big Ten's record — 7-0 after Penn State and Wisconsin wins Saturday night — but then made it clear they're not rooting for Michigan when it plays South Carolina in the Outback Bowl on New Year's Day.
Here are three top returnees, three big losses and three key incoming freshmen for Michigan State.
THREE TOP RETURNEES
RB LJ Scott: Much like Connor Cook and Shilique Calhoun in 2015, getting a player like Scott back for his senior season is as big as any recruit. Scott finished with 927 yards and eight touchdowns and has led MSU in rushing each of his three seasons. He now sits 12th in career rushing yards with 2,591.
First look: Michigan State’s youngsters led to big turnaround from 2016
The food was better at this year’s Michigan State football banquet. So was the morale.
Winning will do that, and few teams turned it around this year like the Spartans, who were one of the most improved teams in the nation.
At last year’s banquet, the Spartans washed down a 3-9 season with water and “a couple of pieces of mac and cheese or whatever,” according to linebacker Joe Bachie.
MSU prepares for Washington State’s aerial assault
East Lansing — There was a relaxed atmosphere at Michigan State's football facility on Monday.
The Spartans had just wrapped up their final practice at home in preparation for their Holiday Bowl matchup with Washington State on Dec. 28 and were getting a few days off for the holidays before heading to San Diego on Friday.
East Lansing — There were plenty of smiles around the Kellogg Center on the campus of Michigan State on Sunday as the football team held its annual banquet.
Players dressed in suits and ties surrounded by their families, and of course, the Spartans coaches celebrated a season that few will forget. It wasn't like 2015 when a playoff game was on the horizon or 2013 when a trip to the Rose Bowl awaited.
Most valuable player, offense: There are a few directions to go here as it's hard to overlook the impressive stretch QB Brian Lewerke had in the middle of Big Ten play and the receivers, as a whole, played a big role in MSU's success. But the choice her is junior WR Felton Davis. He led the team with 51 catches for 658 yards and eight touchdowns, which ranked third in the Big Ten. He proved to be Lewerke's favorite target in the red zone and had three two-touchdown games while ranking sixth in the Big Ten in receptions per game (4.3).
East Lansing — Michigan State linebacker Joe Bachie said it as simply as he could after practice Tues day — the Spartans are in no position to start feeling sorry for themselves.
"We work on what's next right away," Bachie said. "No time to hang our head about last week. We've got a great opponent coming in and it's Spartan Stadium, so we have to come out and be ready to go."
Linebacker Joe Bachie, who had a career-high 13 tackles in Michigan State's win over Indiana on Saturday, has been named Big Ten co-Defensive Player of the Week.
Bachie shares the honor with Penn State linebacker Jason Cabinda.
Michigan State's defense limited Indiana to 253 yards of total offense, the unit's best performance of the season. Indiana had 95 yards rushing, the fourth time this season the Spartans have held an opponent under 100 yards on the ground.
Michigan State run defense rejoins nation’s elite
EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) — When the Michigan State coaching staff dissected last year's unexpected collapse, they knew that one of the main culprits was an uncharacteristically porous run defense.
So far this season, it's proven to be a one-year anomaly. The 18th-ranked Spartans have returned to their old, hard-nosed, run-stuffing ways, paring more than 65 yards per game off their average.
No. 21 MSU takes momentum from Michigan win to Minnesota
No. 21 Michigan State (4-1, 2-0 Big Ten) at Minnesota (3-2, 0-2), Saturday 8 p.m. ET (BTN).
Fast start lifts Michigan State to 17-10 win over Iowa
EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Joe Bachie wasn't sure if it was an interception or a fumble recovery.
"I just knew I'd caught it," the Michigan State linebacker said.
Bachie came diving in and gathered the ball out of midair, giving the Spartans a crucial turnover in the third quarter of their 17-10 win over Iowa on Saturday. That play — it went down officially as a fumble — ended the most promising drive of the second half for the Hawkeyes, and Michigan State held on to win.
