Column: Daytona 500 was action-packed opener NASCAR needed
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Jim France told 'em to race and NASCAR's next generation didn't disappoint.
The Daytona 500 packed an unforeseen punch that, if nothing else, entertained Sunday's sun-drenched, sold-out crowd at the famed "World Center of Racing." There were a ton of wrecks, especially during the final 20 laps of regulation, which Kyle Busch described as the portion of the race in which "brains come unglued."

Kyle Busch laments lack of help, runner-up finish at Daytona
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Kyle Busch felt like an amiable teammate, willing to do whatever it took to get Joe Gibbs Racing to victory lane at the Daytona 500. He's not so sure Denny Hamlin did the same.
Busch finished second in "The Great American Race," extending his winless streak to 14 in NASCAR's season opener, and sounded less than thrilled with the way Hamlin handled the final laps at Daytona International Speedway.

Denny Hamlin has won his second Daytona 500 in four years, taking the checkered flag for Joe Gibbs Racing a month after Joe Gibbs' oldest son died following a long battle with a degenerative neurological disease. J.D. Gibbs was 49.

Joe Gibbs touched by support following death of son
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Joe Gibbs was in the second season of owning his eponymous race team when the stress of a tight race at the Daytona 500 hit him.
His relatively inexperienced son was working in the pits and needed to be flawless with team driver Dale Jarrett leading the race. Sure enough, Jarrett pulled in to his stall and tire changer J.D Gibbs would have to rise to the performance of his career.
"I was looking for some place to throw up," Joe Gibbs said.
Truex makes move to Joe Gibbs Racing with championship goal
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Martin Truex Jr. was just one of many Philadelphia Eagles fans bummed when Nick Foles' pass deflected off a receiver and was intercepted to end a playoff push toward a second straight Super Bowl.
"They had a shot," Truex said. "Without that interception, I think they could have pulled it off."
The Eagles were smacked with the same forlorn reality Truex suffered through only two months earlier — it's hard to win back-to-back championships.
Truex and Wallace top Daytona speed charts in rainy 1st day
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Chase Elliott took blame for the first crash of NASCAR's new season on a blustery day at Daytona International Speedway that was shortened by rain.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Daniel Suarez will hit a reset on his career, getting a second chance to prove he can win at NASCAR's top level.

All 12 playoff coaches are tied to Bill Walsh or Parcells
There is no denying the impact on the coaching world that Bill Walsh and Bill Parcells have had. The hard evidence is apparent again as the NFL playoffs begin.
All 12 of the coaches have some sort of tie-in to either three-time Super Bowl champion Walsh or two-time winner Parcells. Yes, all 12.
Some are direct: New England's Bill Belichick, New Orleans' Sean Payton and the Chargers' Anthony Lynn were assistants under Parcells.
Bass Pro Shops moves with Martin Truex Jr. to Gibbs team
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Martin Truex Jr. landed Bass Pro Shops as sponsor for 24 races this season with Joe Gibbs Racing.
Bass Pro first partnered with Truex in 2001 and was on his car when he won the 2017 Cup Series championship with Furniture Row Racing. That team folded at the end of November because another sponsor left NASCAR and Furniture Row could not replace the funding.
It made Truex available to move to JGR, and Bass Pro will follow as his primary sponsor.

AVONDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Crashes in consecutive weeks had backed Christopher Bell into a corner that jeopardized his strong rookie season in the Xfinity Series.

Hamlin looking to his Darlington touch for NASCAR playoffs
DARLINGTON, S.C. (AP) — About the only time Denny Hamlin's had difficulty at Darlington Raceway came when he was trying to impress the brass at Joe Gibbs Racing.
