Boe takes biathlon gold after Fourcade’s stunning collapse
PYEONGCHANG, South Korea (AP) — Martin Fourcade's rare collapse on the final shoot of the 20-kilometer individual race handed Norwegian rival Johannes Thingnes Boe his first Olympic gold medal in biathlon on Thursday.
Fourcade, the world's top-ranked biathlete and already a gold medalist at the Pyeongchang Games, shockingly missed his final two targets.
"That was like a gift," Boe said. "Even if he had only missed one of the last two shots he would have been the winner."
Olympic biathlon race produces a stunner as favorites falter
PYEONGCHANG, South Korea (AP) — The two-man race between Martin Fourcade and Johannes Thingnes Boe for Olympic gold never materialized.
They've pretty much become the Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte of the biathlon — only they have skis and rifles instead of Speedos and swim caps.
So when neither landed on the medal podium Sunday at the Pyeongchang Games, it sent shockwaves through the biathlon world.
