Puig homered three times and had a career-high seven RBIs, giving him five homers in two games, and the Los Angeles Dodgers routed St. Louis 17-4 Saturday and moved into first place in the National League West.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Cardinals pitcher John Gant got a new label from teammate Jose Martinez — power hitter.
Harrison Bader and Gant hit back-to-back home runs, Gant pitched into the sixth inning and St. Louis beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 5-0 on Thursday night.
"You hit one, you're lucky," Martinez said of Gant's second blast of the season. "You hit a second one, you're a power hitter."

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Spot starter John Gant earned himself another turn in the rotation.
Gant pitched one-hit ball over a career-high seven innings, Marcell Ozuna hit a two-run double and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Cleveland Indians 4-0 on Monday night.
"I would think so," St. Louis manager Mike Matheny said about Gant getting another start. "He didn't do anything to take that away from him."
Cardinals place Wacha on DL, MRI scheduled
MILWAUKEE (AP) — Cardinals right-handed pitcher Michael Wacha returned to St. Louis on Thursday for an MRI.
The Cardinals placed Wacha on the 10-day disabled list with a left oblique strain before Thursday night's game against the Milwaukee Brewers. They recalled right-hander John Gant from Triple-A Memphis.
"Everyone has injuries," Cardinals general manager Michael Girsch said. "We've just got to deal with it."
Musgrove uses arm, bat to beat Cards 8-1 in Pirates debut
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Joe Musgrove's first game with the Pittsburgh Pirates couldn't have gone much better.
On the mound. Or, at the plate.
Musgrove came off the disabled list to pitch seven scoreless innings while also getting his first career hit and scoring the winning run as Pittsburgh beat the St. Louis Cardinals 8-1 on Friday night.
"It was a really exciting night for me," Musgrove said. "Everything went well."
Cardinals send LHP Jaime Garcia to Braves for 3 prospects
ATLANTA (AP) — The Atlanta Braves made another move in the dramatic offseason retooling of their rotation on Thursday by acquiring left-hander Jaime Garcia from the St. Louis Cardinals.
The Cardinals got a trio of prospects, including second baseman Luke Dykstra, the son of former All-Star Lenny Dykstra. The Cardinals also landed right-handers John Gant and Chris Ellis.
Goldschmidt’s game-ending HR lifts D’backs over Braves 9-8
PHOENIX (AP) — Paul Goldschmidt seems to do it all for the Arizona Diamondbacks. It had been nearly two years since his last game-ending homer, though.
He had the big hit Monday night, connecting to lead off the ninth inning and lift the Diamondbacks over the Atlanta Braves 9-8.
He homered off John Gant (1-3), sending an 0-1 pitch deep into seats in left field and helping Arizona overcome a five-run deficit and a two-homer night from Freddie Freeman.
