Review: John Hiatt finds inspiration doing romance dance
John Hiatt, "The Eclipse Sessions" (New West)
At age 66, John Hiatt is still writing love songs — and good ones. On "The Eclipse Sessions," he sings about the wonder of love, the trouble with love, flowering love and faded love.
Not that Hiatt has turned syrupy. Wry lyrics provide a bulwark against sentimentality, and the Indiana native's untethered corn belt tenor is the perfect delivery system. "If you want me, baby, I'm over the hill," he sings.
What started in 2017 as a problem turned out to be a blessing for this year's SummerSounds concert series.
The band scheduled to perform on June 30 backed out about three days prior, says organizer Dick McCormick, leaving him and fellow organizer Gene James scrambling for a replacement act.
By hook or crook, they were able to book Pittsburgh rock and soul band The Commonheart, led by frontman Clinton Clegg.
Each of the first three songs on Lilly Hiatt's new album is marked by a place: the first a town, the second a state and the third a street.
Tickets for a concert by Lyle Lovett and John Hiatt Nov. 2 at Mayo Civic Center will go on sale at 10 a.m. Friday.
Both artists would be considered among the first rank of singer/songwriters who work in the rich vein of folk, blues, country, jazz and rock music.
John Hiatt’s daughter Lilly follows her own musical path
NEW YORK (AP) — Dad's great and all, but if you really want to get singer Lilly Hiatt excited, put her onstage next to Eddie Vedder.
Meeting the Pearl Jam lead singer is a bucket list item for the 33-year-old daughter of songwriter John Hiatt, and a reminder that even with the strong musical bloodlines, she's got her own style and influences.
Lyle Lovett and John Hiatt in an acoustic concert at the Ridgefield Playhouse
“An Acoustic Evening with Lyle Lovett and John Hiatt” takes place at the Ridgefield Playhouse on Wednesday, Jan. 25.
Lovett, 59, is a Grammy-winning singer, composer and actor who hails from Texas. “You’ve Got a Friend in Me,” from the film “Toy Story,” is among his hits, along with “If I Had a Boat” and “Give Back My Heart.”
Country singer-songwriters Lyle Lovett and John Hiatt will grace Southeast Texas with a "rare and intimate concert" at the Jefferson Theatre early next year, the City of Beaumont announced Thursday.
The acoustic performance begins at 8 p.m. Feb. 18 at the place where Lyle once played a sold-out show.
Lyle, who rose to fame in the 1980s and '90s, is known for hits like "Cowboy Man," "Stand By Your Man" and "She's No Lady."
Compromise may allow desert race through Nevada monument
RENO, Nev. (AP) — A compromise may be in the works that would allow a popular off-highway race from Las Vegas to Reno to run next week through a new national monument in southern Nevada.
The U.S. Bureau of Land Management is still considering whether to give final approval to the 640-mile, two-day race that would pass though the Basin and Range National Monument that President Obama designated last summer.
Conservation groups have objected to plans for the race...
