Friends and fellow writers pay tribute at Roth memorial
NEW YORK (AP) — Philip Roth had it all planned.
"Many years ago, I received in the mail a letter in which he outlined the instructions for his memorial service," his close friend Joel Conarroe told a gathering of hundreds Tuesday during a tribute at the midtown Manhattan branch of the New York Public Library. The author of "American Pastoral," ''Portnoy's Complaint" and other celebrated novels was as precise about his death, Conarroe explained, as he had been about his life and work.
Colts release Simon, Bond, make trade to reach 53-man limit
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The Indianapolis Colts have cut defensive end John Simon and center Deyshawn Bond to trim the roster to the 53-player limit.
Simon was ninth on the team in tackles last season with 42 as a linebacker but moved to defensive end as the Colts switched from a 3-4 front to the more traditional 4-3. Bond made the team last season as an undrafted rookie and started the first four games before sustaining a season-ending torn quad.
WESTFIELD, Ind. (AP) — Tarell Basham, Jabaal Sheard and John Simon spent the offseason brushing up on the nuances of playing defensive end.
They worked on quick first steps, honing their swim and spin moves and, of course, getting re-acclimated with the three-point stance.

Penn has played 160 consecutive regular-season games, which is tied with Cleveland's Joe Thomas for the longest active streak for an NFL offensive lineman.
