COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) — John Thompson III and coach Ronald Nored of the G League's Long Island Nets will assist Jeff Van Gundy in the U.S. basketball team's next two rounds of World Cup qualifying.
USA Basketball announced Tuesday that Thompson, the former Georgetown coach, would return after serving on Van Gundy's staff during the qualifying games in February. Nored, who played on Butler's consecutive NCAA Tournament runner-up teams in 2010-11, replaces Mo McHone.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Nearly three months after he was introduced as Georgetown's new basketball coach, Patrick Ewing has a staff of assistants and recruiters: Louis Orr, Robert Kirby and Akbar Waheed.
The school announced Ewing's choices on Monday.
Orr was the head coach at Bowling Green from 2007-14, at Seton Hall from 2001-06 and at Siena in 2000-01. He and Ewing were NBA teammates with the New York Knicks.
WASHINGTON (AP) — John Thompson III was fired as Georgetown's basketball coach Thursday after two consecutive losing seasons at the school his father led to a national championship.
Thompson said in a statement released by agent David Falk that he was "honored" to have been the Hoyas' coach and proud of what his players have "accomplished on the court and how they are thriving since leaving Georgetown."
Georgetown pulls away late to upset No. 11 Butler 85-81
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Georgetown coach John Thompson III watched anxiously while his team scrambled to get in position for a shot late in the game.
Eventually, Jessie Govan bailed the Hoyas out.
The sophomore center hit a 3-pointer from NBA range with 1:03 left, and Georgetown pulled out an 85-81 upset at No. 11 Butler on Saturday night.
Govan's unexpected 3 put the Hoyas ahead by five. He'd made just two shots from beyond the arc in Big East play before Saturday.
Georgetown beats Syracuse 78-71 in rivalry renewal
SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) — If only Syracuse had the "Pearl" — on the court instead of in their hearts.
On a day the Orange paid tribute to the late Dwayne "Pearl" Washington, L.J. Peak and Rodney Pryor put a damper on the day, combining for 43 points as Georgetown held off Syracuse 78-71 on Saturday.
Peak had 23 points and 11 rebounds and Pryor added 20 points to key the victory in the renewal of a once-fierce Big East rivalry, which Washington was a big part of.
Georgetown’s Copeland to transfer at end of semester
WASHINGTON (AP) — Georgetown forward Isaac Copeland plans to transfer at the end of the semester.
Coach John Thompson III announced the news Monday.
Copeland, a junior from Raleigh, North Carolina, has appeared in seven games so far this season with five starts, averaging 5.4 points and 3.3 rebounds in 19.6 minutes. In 73 games at Georgetown, he averaged 8.6 points and 4.5 rebounds.
Welcome home, Trey: Mourning, Hoyas top La Salle 93-78
MIAMI (AP) — Trey Mourning was the last Georgetown player to get into the game, as well as the last player to leave the court after posing for plenty of photos and hugs with friends and family.
Best of all, his team got a win.
L.J. Peak scored 24 points, Rodney Pryor added 19 and Georgetown closed with a flourish to beat La Salle 93-78 on Saturday in the Hoophall Miami Invitational. It was tied at 67 with 8:44 left, before the Hoyas finished on a 26-11 run.

WASHINGTON (AP) — After decades of failed attempts to drum up enough interest or support for an on-campus basketball practice facility, Georgetown Hall of Fame coach John Thompson was still around to see what he says he has been waiting for since at least 1978.
