JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (AP) — Isaiah Tisdale scored a career-best 29 points and made six free throws in the last 35 seconds as East Tennessee State fended off The Citadel 91-83 Thursday night.
Tisdale scored 20 of his 29 points after halftime and, despite being a 61 percent free-throw shooter, calmly sank six in a row after The Citadel had cut the ETSU lead to 83-80 on a couple of free throws by Hayden Brown.
Magee scores 11 of 32 points in OT, Wofford beats ETSU 78-76
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (AP) — Fletcher Magee scored 11 of his 32 points in overtime on Thursday night and Wofford stayed undefeated in Southern Conference play with a 78-76 win over East Tennessee State.
Magee made 7 of 15 from 3-point range, including the go-ahead 3 that made it 75-73 for the Terriers (20-4, 12-0) with 31 seconds left in the game. Fouled on the shot, Magee missed the extra free throw but made two free throws with eight seconds left to extend the lead to four.
Tennessee brewery creating 150th anniversary beer
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (AP) — Johnson City Brewing Co. is brewing up a one-of-a-kind birthday present for the city.
On Thursday, community members trekked to the downtown brewhouse to contribute to the brewery's special sesquicentennial beer.
"Before it was Johnson City, the area was called Blue Plum, so we figured, let's make a Blue Plum Lager, light and crisp, well-balanced; and then through fermentation, we'll add fresh, pureed plums into the beer," said head brewer Eric Latham.
ETSU using grant to train sexual assault nurse examiners
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (AP) — East Tennessee State University says it will use a $1.4 million federal grant to train sexual assault nurse examiners in rural communities.
According to a news release, the effort is meant to decrease the number of unreported sexual assaults in the Appalachian highlands and increase prosecution.

East Tennessee State University expands military student aid
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (AP) — East Tennessee State University is expanding scholarships and waiving out-of-state tuition for military service members, their families and veterans.
According to the school, beginning in the spring it will offer 15 $1,000 scholarships each semester to military spouses or children. An additional 10 scholarships of $1,500 each will go to veterans who no longer receive GI Bill benefits.
Incoming military-affiliated students can also waive out-of-state tuition.

6 indicted in death of Tennessee inmate
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (AP) — Six men have been indicted in a Tennessee inmate's death.
A Tennessee Bureau of Investigation statement says a Washington County grand jury returned indictments Thursday charging the men in Joseph Lockner's death.
The Johnson City Press reports a detention officer found the 29-year-old unresponsive on a bathroom floor Dec. 17 after hearing commotion. Lockner later died as a result of his injuries.
East Tennessee State extends Sanders’ contract through 2023
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (AP) — East Tennessee State coach Randy Sanders has received a two-year contract extension after leading the Buccaneers to a Football Championship Subdivision playoff appearance in his debut season.
The extension means that Sanders' contract now runs through the 2023 season. The deal pays him $255,000 annually.
Sanders said Friday in a release announcing the extension that "I am excited to build off last season's success and continue taking this program to new heights."
Woman accused of putting her baby in freezer, closing lid
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (AP) — A Tennessee woman accused of placing her 8-month-old baby into a freezer has been charged with child abuse.
The reports say 19-year-old Brittany C. Smith placed the infant in a freezer and closed the lid last week in Johnson City. The child was taken to a hospital, but no condition has been released.

Fossils of prehistoric pig-looking animals ID’d in Tennessee
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (AP) — East Tennessee State University says its researchers have discovered fossils of two extinct prehistoric, pig-looking species that previously had never been found in the Appalachian region.
The university says the species of peccaries were identified in the fossil-rich clays of the Gray Fossil Site, once a large pond surrounded by forest dating back about 5 million years.

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (AP) — Friends and metal fans in Texas, who listened on Thursdays to his Sweet Nightmares radio show on KPFT 90.1 FM knew him as the Herminator. People here who crave authentic Mexican food know him as the Tennessee Tamale Guy.
Last year, when Hurricane Harvey hammered Houston, the Herminator's house was lifted off its foundation.

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (AP) — Devlin Hodges ran for three touchdowns and surpassed Steve McNair for the most passing yards in a Football Championship Subdivision career as Samford denied East Tennessee State the outright Southern Conference championship with a 38-27 upset on Saturday afternoon.
Hodges finished 40 of 53 for 404 yards to give him a career mark of 14, 584. McNair set the previous mark of 14,496 at Alcorn State (1991-94).
Body found in Tennessee in 1985 was New Hampshire woman
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (AP) — Authorities say a body found 33 years ago along an east Tennessee highway has been identified as a woman reported missing from New Hampshire.
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation said the partially decomposed body sat unidentified since it was found along Interstate 81 in Greene County in April 1985.

NCAA places ETSU on probation for men’s tennis violations
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (AP) — East Tennessee State's athletics department has been placed on two years' probation and its former men's tennis coach has received a five-year show cause order from the NCAA.
The NCAA ruled former coach Yaser Zaatini and a booster provided about 14 men's tennis players with $9,937 in impermissible benefits over the course of five years. The report didn't mention Zaatini by name.

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (AP) — President Donald Trump announced Monday he is returning to Tennessee for another fundraiser to boost Republican Marsha Blackburn in her tough U.S. Senate race, as well as hold a rally for his supporters.
An invitation says the event will be next Monday in Johnson City. Tickets cost $10,000 per couple, including a photo with Trump; or $25,000 a couple, including the photo and a roundtable with Trump. Contributions will fuel Blackburn's joint fundraising committee.

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (AP) — Dylan Weigel tripped up Darius Morehead in the end zone for a go-ahead safety and East Tennessee State scored 23 unanswered points to rally for a 29-27 victory over Furman in Southern Conference play on Saturday night.
Furman used touchdown runs by Devin Wynn and Morehead to turn a 13-6 halftime lead into a 27-6 advantage with 8:19 left in the third quarter, but from there it was all Buccaneers (3-1, 2-0).
ETSU avoids upset at hands of Mars Hill
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (AP) — Logan Marchi tossed three touchdown passes and East Tennessee State dominated the second half in a 28-7 victory over Division II Mars Hill in a season opener on Saturday.
Mars Hill grabbed a 7-0 first-quarter lead on Austin Brown's 15-yard scoring strike to Craig Rucker. The Mountain Lions maintained the lead until Marchi, who transferred from Temple, connected with Kobe Kelley from 14 yards out to knot the score with 30 seconds left in the half.
East Tennessee State adds Oklahoma State transfer N’Guessan
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (AP) — East Tennessee State has signed a 7-footer, adding Oklahoma State transfer Lucas N'Guessan to its roster.
N'Guessan, who is from the Netherlands, will sit out the 2018-19 season due to NCAA transfer rules. He has two years of eligibility remaining.
ETSU coach Steve Forbes said in a statement that "having the opportunity this upcoming year to sit out and work on his game and in the weight room will be invaluable to his future and ours."

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (AP) _ NN Inc. (NNBR) on Wednesday reported a loss of $24.5 million in its second quarter.
On a per-share basis, the Johnson City, Tennessee-based company said it had a loss of 89 cents. Earnings, adjusted for costs related to mergers and acquisitions and non-recurring costs, came to 38 cents per share.
The results met Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of three analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was also for earnings of 38 cents per share.
