Steinbrenner says Yankees exploring rotation upgrade
NEW YORK (AP) — Hal Steinbrenner says his New York Yankees may need a starting pitching upgrade if they're going to reach their first World Series since 2009.

NEW YORK (AP) — Right-hander Jonathan Loaisiga will be brought up from Double-A by the New York Yankees to make his major league debut against Tampa Bay on Friday night.
The 23-year-old Loaisiga returned last year following Tommy John surgery. He is 3-1 with a 4.32 ERA in six starts at Double-A Trenton after starting 3-0 with a 1.35 ERA at Class A Tampa this season, striking out 58 in 45 innings.
CLEARWATER, Fla. (AP) — New York Yankees pitcher Luis Cessa made his first game appearance in nearly two months, struggling with his control as he allowed two runs over 1 2/3 innings for the Class A Tampa Tarpons in a 4-1 loss to Philadelphia's Clearwater Threshers on Monday night.
Cessa, a 26-year-old right-hander, pitched four innings over three relief appearances in early April, then went on the disabled list with a left oblique strain.
NEW YORK (AP) — Yankees left-hander Jordan Montgomery has undergone Tommy John surgery, which will sideline him until the second half of next season or possibly 2020.
Head team physician Dr. Christopher Ahmad operated Thursday at New York-Presbyterian Hospital. The team announced the reconstructive operation repaired a torn ulnar collateral ligament in Montgomery's left elbow, consistent with a recent MRI. A loose bone chip also was removed.

HOUSTON (AP) — Not long after Gary Sanchez delivered a knockout blow for the New York Yankees on Tuesday night with a three-run homer off Ken Giles in the ninth inning, the Houston closer landed a shot of his own.
Giles punched himself twice — with the second landing on his face — as he left one batter after Sanchez's go-ahead homer. A somber Giles said the outburst was fueled by frustration.
HOUSTON (AP) — New York Yankees left-hander Jordan Montgomery has left Tuesday night's game against the Houston Astros with tightness in his throwing elbow.
Montgomery threw just seven pitches in a perfect first inning before being replaced by Domingo German for the second. He appeared to wince after a pitch and shook his arm.
The team says Montgomery will return to New York on Wednesday to be evaluated by team physician Dr. Christopher Ahmad.
Detroit — Aaron Hicks hit an inside-the-park home run in the second inning, then added a solo shot over the fence in the sixth to send the New York Yankees to an 8-6 victory over the skidding Detroit Tigers on Friday night.
Hicks came up with a runner on second and hit a drive to right-center that bounced off the wall and past center fielder Leonys Martin. The ball rolled across a vacant area of turf while Hicks circled the bases for the Yankees' first inside-the-park homer since 2011.
NEW YORK (AP) — Aaron Boone woke up before heading to the ballpark for his first home opener as New York Yankees manager and peeked outside the window.
