Jorge Villafana’s MLS journey started with an open tryout
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Portland Timbers defender Jorge Villafana was just a kid in high school when he got a shot at reality show stardom.
Villafana's uncle signed him up for the first Sueno MLS, or Dream MLS, essentially a made-for-TV tryout to play in the league. In 2007, the prize was a shot at Chivas USA's under-19 team.
For Villafana, it was Survivor-esque. He beat out 1,900 hopefuls to win the contest and later that year he was signed to an MLS contract with Chivas.

The 20-year-old midfielder was part of a five-man midfield in a 4-2-3-1 formation with Weston McKennie and Wil Trapp in deep positions and Julian Green flanked by Pulisic and Tim Weah — a son of former FIFA Player of the Year and current Liberia President George Weah.
NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. coach Bruce Arena has used 48 players during a 14-game unbeaten streak since replacing Jurgen Klinsmann last November, including seven who made their national team debuts.
There could be many fresh faces for next year's World Cup, led by teenager star Christian Pulisic. Arena's roster projects to include only about half the players who made the trip to Brazil in 2014.
SANTA CLARA, Calif. SAN JOSE, Calif. Arena to experiment with more combinations against Jamaica
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) — After a dismal 0-0 tie against an inexperienced group of Serbians in his first game as U.S. coach in more than a decade, Bruce Arena gets one more look at the domestic part of his player pool when the Americans play Jamaica in an exhibition on Friday night ahead of the resumption of World Cup qualifying.
Arena said defenders Walker Zimmerman and Jorge Villafana will play against the Reggae Boyz, with Zimmerman making his international debut five days after Villafana.
