Chelsea coach to persist with Kante in unfamiliar role
LONDON (AP) — Chelsea coach Maurizio Sarri will persist with playing N'Golo Kante in an unfamiliar advanced position in midfield despite acknowledging the France international has yet to settle in his new role.
Kante, widely considered the world's best holding midfielder, has a slightly more attacking role in Chelsea's team this season as Sarri looks to accommodate a more creative deep-lying playmaker in new signing Jorginho.
Rampant Tottenham inflicts first loss of EPL on Chelsea
LONDON (AP) — Tottenham inflicted Chelsea's first loss in the English Premier League with a rampant performance in a 3-1 win at Wembley Stadium on Saturday.
Dele Alli, Harry Kane, and Son Heung-min scored for Tottenham, which jumped above its London rival in the standings into third place.
Kante adjusts to new attacking role at Chelsea
Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri inherited possibly the best defensive midfielder in the world when he took over the team in the offseason.
N'Golo Kante has been one of the most influential players in English soccer's recent history, capturing back-to-back Premier League titles with Leicester (2016) and Chelsea (2017), and was the rock in the midfield of France's World Cup-winning team in Russia.
So what has Sarri done with Kante upon arriving at Stamford Bridge? Change his position, of course.
The answer to Manchester City's frustrating search for a backup defensive midfielder could lie inside the English champion's squad.
City manager Pep Guardiola said on Friday the club is looking to get a work permit for 20-year-old Brazilian Douglas Luiz, who was signed from Vasco da Gama in the 2017 offseason and then spent last season on loan at Spanish side Girona.
Douglas made most of his 17 appearances for Girona off the bench and he barely featured in the final months of the season.
Jorginho follows Sarri to Chelsea from Napoli
LONDON (AP) — Italy midfielder Jorginho has followed Maurizio Sarri to Chelsea from Napoli.
Around two hours after Saturday's announcement of Sarri's arrival at Chelsea, the English club said Jorginho had joined on a five-year deal from Napoli. British media reported the fee was 57 million pounds ($75 million).
Jorginho was a deep-lying playmaker in Sarri's Napoli team that finished second in Serie A last season and played some of the best football in Europe.
Zaza, Florenzi back in Italy squad for World Cup playoff
MILAN (AP) — Simone Zaza and Alessandro Florenzi are back in the Italy squad for the first time in a year, and there was also a surprise call-up for Jorghino for the World Cup playoff against Sweden.
Zaza was recalled on Saturday after eight goals in the striker's last seven league games for Valencia. Roma's Florenzi returned after twice rupturing the ACL in his knee.
