Junis dominates Tigers again as Royals roll, 6-2
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Jakob Junis had just served up a home run to JaCoby Jones and a base hit to Jeimer Candelario, and the Royals' young right-hander could feel the inning starting to get away from him.
So when he turned around to watch his infield turn a timely double-play on a grounder by Jose Iglesias, Junis wheeled right back around with the kind of fist pump rare for the soft-spoken starter.
"That was a big at-bat," Junis said. "Who knows if I would have gotten a chance to go back out."
Iglesias, Goodrum help Tigers end six-game losing streak
DETROIT (AP) — The Detroit Tigers didn't solve all their offensive problems against the Minnesota Twins on Friday night.
After scoring eight runs on a 0-6 road trip, the Tigers got three hits against Ervin Santana and the Minnesota bullpen in their first game back at home.
Somehow, they turned that into enough for a 5-3 victory. Two of the hits were two-run home runs by Niko Goodrum and Jose Iglesias and the third was a JaCoby Jones triple that led to Detroit's first run.
OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Detroit Tigers left-hander Blaine Hardy gave up Jed Lowrie's infield single to begin the seventh inning for the Athletics' first hit, ending a no-hit bid as the clubs opened a weekend series Friday night.
Hardy had issued only a pair of walks to Matt Olson — the first on a 13-pitch plate appearance in the second. Before the walk, Olson's drive to right went to a crew chief review and was confirmed as sailing just right of the pole.
Detroit — There will be some empty seats on the Tigers winter caravan Thursday and Friday, and at TigerFest on Saturday.
Miguel Cabrera, Jose Iglesias, James McCann, Victor Martinez and pitching coach Chris Bosio will not take part in the annual barnstorming weekend, Tigers general manager Al Avila said.
The Tigers have agreed to terms on a one-year contract with shortstop Jose Iglesias, avoiding arbitration, the team announced Wednesday.
Financial terms were not disclosed. Iglesias made $4.1 million in 2017.

Tigers reach 1-year, $6,275,000 deal with Iglesias
DETROIT (AP) — The Detroit Tigers have avoided arbitration with Jose Iglesias, agreeing to a $6,275,000, one-year contract with the 28-year-old shortstop.
Iglesias was the only remaining Detroit player eligible for arbitration . He had asked for $6.8 million and the team had offered $5.6 million.
Tigers avoid arbitration with Castellanos, Wilson, Greene
DETROIT (AP) — The Detroit Tigers have agreed to a one-year, $6.05 million contract with Nicholas Castellanos, avoiding arbitration.
The Tigers also reached one-year deals with right-handers Alex Wilson ($1,925,000) and Shane Greene ($1.95 million). Shortstop Jose Iglesias is still eligible for arbitration. He is asking for $6.8 million and the team is offering $5.6 million.
One of the Detroit Tigers' remaining arbitration-eligible quartet avoided a possible square-off Friday when Shane Greene agreed on a 2018 contract that will pay the Tigers' bullpen closer $1.95 million.
The figure was revealed by a Tigers source connected with the negotiations who requested anonymity.
Jose Iglesias, Nick Castellanos, and reliever Alex Wilson failed to settle on new contracts ahead of Friday's 1 p.m. deadline for arbitration-eligible players to reach accord with their teams.
Detroit — Two down, four to go.
The Tigers on Thursday signed James McCann to a one-year deal worth $2.375 million, thus avoiding arbitration with their starting catcher.
Last month they signed arbitration-eligible reliever Blaine Hardy to a one-year deal ($795,000). That leaves four players who could go to arbitration — shortstop Jose Iglesias, right fielder Nick Castellanos and relievers Shane Greene and Alex Wilson.
McCann, Tigers reach 1-year deal for $2,375,000
DETROIT (AP) — Catcher James McCann and the Detroit Tigers have agreed to a $2,375,000, one-year contract that avoided arbitration.
The 27-year-old hit .253 with 13 home runs and 49 RBIs last season and made $552,100. He was eligible for arbitration for the first time.
Four Tigers are still eligible for arbitration: third baseman Nicholas Castellanos, shortstop Jose Iglesias and right-handers Shane Greene and Alex Wilson.
More than 35 current and former Detroit Tigers, including 2018 Baseball Hall of Fame inductee Alan Trammell, will participate in the annual TigerFest at Comerica Park on Saturday, Jan. 27.
New manager Ron Gardenhire will attend, as will current Tigers players Miguel Cabrera, Nick Castellanos, Jose Iglesias, Michael Fulmer, Matthew Boyd, Daniel Norris, Shane Greene, JaCoby Jones and Jeimer Candelario.
Orlando, Fla. — Tigers general manager Al Avila said he didn't expect to make any trades during the general managers' meetings, which are taking place Monday and Tuesday at the Waldorf Astoria Resort outside of Disney World.
But, he said he's taken calls from prospecting general managers both before he got down here and in the short time he's been here.
"We're going to take it slow," Avila said. "We're not going to rush into anything."
Hit parade: White Sox pound out 25, rout Tigers 17-7
DETROIT (AP) — In the middle of the best game of his young career, Chicago White Sox rookie Yoan Moncada still got a short lecture from his manager.
With two outs in the sixth and the White Sox holding a comfortable seven-run lead over Detroit, the second baseman didn't get to a grounder by JaCoby Jones, keeping the inning alive Thursday. Jose Iglesias followed with an RBI double.
Manager Rick Renteria immediately made sure Moncada knew he had made a mistake.
DETROIT (AP) — Jose Iglesias has won a lot of games for the Detroit Tigers with his glove.
Lately, he's been helping out with his bat as well.
Iglesias had two RBI doubles as the Tigers rallied from a 3-0 deficit to beat the Houston Astros 5-3 on Saturday.
Iglesias is hitting .364 with four doubles, a homer and 11 RBI in his last 14 games, raising his batting average from .239 to .261.
Iglesias, Boyd lead Tigers over Twins 9-6
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Shane Greene got the key out that sparked the Detroit Tigers on Sunday.
Jose Iglesias had three hits, including a tiebreaking, two-run homer in the seventh, and Greene struck out Eduardo Escobar to preserve the lead in a 9-6 win over Minnesota 9-6 that took 4 hours, 19 minutes — the longest nine-inning game in Twins history.
DETROIT (AP) — The Tigers' top players created a winning rally without doing much of anything.
Alex Avila, Justin Upton and Miguel Cabrera drew walks in the 11th inning, the last with the bases loaded, giving Detroit a 6-5 win over the Toronto Blue Jays.
Indians’ Carrasco strikes out side on 9 pitches
CLEVELAND (AP) — Carlos Carrasco has pitched an immaculate inning — three strikeouts on nine pitches.
Carrasco fanned Detroit's hitters in order in the fifth inning to accomplish the rare feat. The right-hander is just the second pitcher in Cleveland's franchise history to strike out the side on nine pitches, joining Justin Masterson, who did it on June 2, 2014, against Boston.
