SAN DIEGO (AP) — Wil Myers helped give the San Diego Padres an early lead and closer Brad Hand barely held onto it.
Myers homered, doubled and drove in three runs, and rookie Joey Lucchesi threw five scoreless innings to lead San Diego to a 4-3 victory against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Saturday night.
The Padres had to hang on after Hand got himself into trouble in the ninth and then got out of it to earn his 23rd save, thanks to some help from right fielder Hunter Renfroe.
PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Pittsburgh Pirates have activated outfielder Starling Marte off the disabled list.
Marte missed nine games while recovering from an oblique injury he suffered swinging at a pitch against the Chicago White Sox on May 15. He is scheduled to bat third and play center field on Saturday when the Pirates face the St. Louis Cardinals. Marte was hitting .308 with six home runs and 19 RBIs at the time of the injury.
Osuna HR, Pirates beat Tigers 8-3 for doubleheader split
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Jose Osuna made the most of his brief stay with the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Osuna, called up from the minor leagues to serve as an extra player for the second game of a doubleheader, hit a three-run home run to lift the Pirates to an 8-3 victory Wednesday night and a split with the Detroit Tigers.
BRADENTON, Fla. — As he often does with his remarks, Pirates manager Clint Hurdle had a unique way of describing outfielder Bryce Brentz's hitting style.
"It's an aggressive man in the box with bad intentions," he said.
Brentz, who grew up a linebacker and wrestler in Murfreesboro, Tenn., won't argue with his manager. After all, he's been with the Pirates only a month, and he will be fighting to keep his job over the next week.

ATLANTA (AP) — The Atlanta Braves designated right-hander Josh Collmenter for assignment after he surrendered three homers and seven runs in the 10th inning of a loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates.
The 31-year-old Collmenter made 11 appearances for the Braves, going 0-2 with a 9.00 ERA in 17 innings. Right-hander Matt Wisler was called up from Triple-A Gwinnett before Thursday's series finale against the Pirates.

PHOENIX (AP) — Jose Osuna was the last player cut from spring training for the Pittsburgh Pirates. He made it back to the big club, though, and now he's proving his worth.
Osuna hit a two-run homer with two outs in the 10th inning and Tony Watson escaped a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the inning to lift the Pirates over the Arizona Diamondbacks 6-4 on Sunday.
Osuna hit a 3-1 pitch from Tom Wilhelmsen (0-1) out to center field, forcing a split of a four-game series.
