Washington now on verge of elimination after blown lead
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Washington cornerback Josh Norman sat in his locker still in his uniform 45 minutes after the Redskins' latest and costliest loss.
Norman and the rest of the Redskins left all they had left on the field.
Josh Johnson threw for 153 yards and a touchdown in his second straight start as Washington's fourth different quarterback this season only to be intercepted not once, but twice in the final 1:17 Saturday in a 25-16 loss to the Tennessee Titans.
Johnson leads Redskins to late scores, 16-13 win at Jaguars
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Josh Johnson's Madden rating should get a bump after his first NFL start in seven years.
Johnson, who played Madden NFL 19 to learn his new teammates' names, led Washington on two scoring drives in the fourth quarter to beat the Jacksonville Jaguars 16-13 on Sunday.
Injuries have Redskins-Jaguars looking like preseason game
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Cover your eyes, folks. This one could be ugly, even by late-season NFL standards.
When the Washington Redskins and Jacksonville Jaguars take the field Sunday, it might look a little like a preseason game. The dreaded fourth preseason game, too.
4th Redskins QB starter of season prepped with ‘Madden NFL’
WASHINGTON (AP) — This is what it's come to for the Washington Redskins: Their fourth quarterback of a once-promising, now-lost season, Josh Johnson, will be making his first NFL start since 2011 and spent time playing the "Madden NFL" video game to try to pick up something about his new teammates.
"I learned their names, first and foremost," Johnson said with a smile.
Josh Johnson is switching leagues, not teams
Josh Johnson is accustomed to moving around the NFL. On Wednesday, he moved from one league to another.
Johnson was the first player protected last week in a quarterbacks-only draft held by the Alliance of American Football, which will begin play the weekend after the Super Bowl in February. His rights in the eight-team spring league were owned by the San Diego Fleet.
Skins put Dunbar, Quinn, Cooper on IR, sign QB Josh Johnson
ASHBURN, Va. (AP) — The injuries keep mounting for the Washington Redskins, who put three more players on injured reserve Wednesday to raise their season total to 17: starting cornerback Quinton Dunbar, receiver Trey Quinn and guard Jonathan Cooper.
In other moves, the Redskins (6-6) signed Josh Johnson to be their backup quarterback against the visiting New York Giants (4-8) on Sunday and added guard Zac Kerin, center Demetrius Rhaney and defensive end Marcus Smith as free agents.
The Latest: Redskins sign Mark Sanchez to back up Colt McCoy
ASHBURN, Va. (AP) — The Latest on the Washington Redskins' quarterback situation (all times local):
Coach Jay Gruden says the Washington Redskins are signing quarterback Mark Sanchez to back up Colt McCoy after Alex Smith's season-ending injury.
Raiders release quarterback Josh Johnson
ALAMEDA, Calif. (AP) — The Oakland Raiders have released quarterback Josh Johnson.
The team announced the move on Thursday to cut Johnson and go down to three quarterbacks on the roster. Johnson was signed this offseason to compete for a backup spot with EJ Manuel and Connor Cook behind starter Derek Carr.
Johnson has played in 29 games with five starts over his 10-year career. He has completed 54.2 percent of his passes for 1,042 yards, five touchdowns and 10 interceptions.
Raiders sign backup QB Josh Johnson
ALAMEDA, Calif. (AP) — The Oakland Raiders have signed free agent quarterback Josh Johnson to compete for the backup position.
The team on Monday also officially announced the signing of cornerback Shareece Wright, who said last week he agreed to join the Raiders, and the details of a trade agreed to over the weekend that sent kick returner Cordarrelle Patterson to New England.

Texans sign quarterback Josh Johnson, release Matt McGloin
HOUSTON (AP) — The Houston Texans have signed free agent quarterback Josh Johnson and released Matt McGloin.
The moves come a day after coach Bill O'Brien said they had discussed the possibility of adding Colin Kaepernick in the wake of a season-ending knee injury to rookie Deshaun Watson.
Instead of adding Kaepernick, the former 49ers quarterback who began the protest movement by kneeling during the national anthem last season, Houston chose Johnson to be its third quarterback.
Geno Smith makes Giants as backup QB
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — Geno Smith is back in the NFL.
Smith completed a remarkable comeback from major knee surgery last season and his subsequent release by the Jets after an inconsistent tenure. He made the New York Giants' roster as Eli Manning's backup. At least for now.
The 26-year-old Smith edged fellow veteran Josh Johnson for the No. 2 spot, with third-round draft pick Davis Webb waiting in the wings.
The decision was one of several tough ones Saturday for coach Ben McAdoo.
Starting at backup QB, Giants facing difficult roster cuts
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — Giants coach Ben McAdoo feels like he has more than 53 players who can play. But like every other NFL team, he has until Saturday afternoon to cut the roster from 90 players to the limit for opening day.
"We have some depth, we had some good competition and at the positions we needed to see a lot out of last night, they stood up and they played and they competed," McAdoo said Friday. It was exciting to watch and it made our job even harder, but that's good."
Giants’ Geno Smith says playing the Jets will be special
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — Playing the New York Jets is going to be special for Geno Smith.
Not only is it a chance for the 26-year-old to nail down the Giants' backup quarterback job in the annual preseason game against the Jets on Saturday, but it's a shot for the former Jets' second-round pick in 2013 to show his old team they made a mistake waiving him earlier this year after an up and mostly down four-year stint.
Giants’ Manning looking forward to playing against Browns
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — For the past two seasons, Eli Manning has felt a little awkward heading into the New York Giants' preseason opener.
It has nothing to do with the football. It's the lack of it that has bothered the two-time Super Bowl MVP.
Coach Ben McAdoo has sat Manning in the preseason opener the past two seasons and he has been forced to watch Ryan Nassib get the start last year and Josh Johnson get the call this year.

Add rookie Davis Webb into the fight for Giants backup QB
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — The fight for the New York Giants' backup quarterback job is taking on a new dimension.
Heading into the preseason opener, veterans Geno Smith and Josh Johnson seemed to be dueling for the job as Eli Manning's understudy with third-round draft pick Davis Webb expected to be given a year to learn coach Ben McAdoo's system as the No. 3 quarterback.
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — If Geno Smith is going to win the backup quarterback job with New York Giants, the real competition starts Friday.
For the past two weeks in training camp, Smith and fellow veteran Josh Johnson have alternated as the No. 2 quarterback behind two-time Super Bowl MVP Eli Manning. Rookie draft pick Davis Webb has barely seen any action.
Manning and Webb, the third-round draft pick out of California, have their spots on the roster set.
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — Eli Manning didn't play a lot in the preseason a year ago for the New York Giants and that may not change this year.
Manning appeared in two of the four preseason games in 2016 and threw 38 passes before leading the Giants to an 11-5 record and their first playoff appearance since the 2011 Super Bowl season.
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — Geno Smith didn't catch a break in his final two seasons with the New York Jets, and it seems his chances of resurrecting his career with the Giants are facing obstacles.
Not only does Smith have to beat out incumbent Josh Johnson for the backup quarterback job to Eli Manning, his prospects of making the team took another hit in the NFL draft when the Giants selected Davis Webb with their third-round draft pick.
Lane Johnson returns to Eagles OL after suspension
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The Philadelphia Eagles get back their starting right tackle for Thursday night's game against the New York Giants.
Lane Johnson returns from a 10-game suspension for violating the NFL's performance-enhancers policy and will start.
New York's key inactive is cornerback Janoris Jenkins, their best cover man. He has a back problem.
New York Giants place Vereen, Nassib on injured reserve
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — The New York Giants have placed running back Shane Vereen and backup quarterback Ryan Nassib on injured reserve.
The Giants announced the moves Tuesday, a day after disclosing that Vereen had reinjured the triceps muscle that put him on injured reserve after the third week of the season. Nassib has had a recurring elbow injury this season.
Titans without half of starting secondary vs. Jaguars
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — The Tennessee Titans are without three starters against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Thursday night, including half of their secondary.
The Titans already had declared safety Rashad Johnson (neck) and cornerback Perrish Cox (concussion) out, and Daimion Stafford will start at safety with Brice McCain at cornerback. Brian Schwenke will start at left guard with Quinton Spain (bruised right knee) out.
EAST RUTHERFORD – Odell Beckham Jr.’s execution of a corner route was not to his liking at one point during Wednesday’s practice.
The Giants have been preaching about focusing on details and being more efficient in order to overcome the imperfections of their offense, and Beckham – so often the greatest critic of his own game – demanded perfection of himself.
Giants waive linebacker Brinkley, sign quarterback Johnson
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — The New York Giants have signed veteran quarterback Josh Johnson and terminated the contract of middle linebacker Jasper Brinkley.
The Giants announced the moves Monday as they began preparing for the season opener against Dallas.
The signing of Johnson gives New York three quarterbacks for the first time since 2013. He joins Eli Manning and backup Ryan Nassib.
Jaguars keep former CFL player Johnson over former Auburn QB
After two years in the Canadian Football League, cornerback Josh Johnson is back in the NFL.
His challenge now is to prolong his stay.
Johnson made Jacksonville's 53-man roster Saturday, beating out former Auburn quarterback Nick Marshall for the fifth and final cornerback spot. Johnson spent the 2013 preseason with San Diego before getting waived and landing with the BC Lions.
Ravens keep sluggish Saints winless in preseason, 23-14
NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Ravens defensive tackle Michael Pierce was a little-known undrafted rookie out Samford when the preseason began.
He was among the stars of Baltimore's preseason finale, sacking and stripping Saints backup quarterback Luke McCown, then recovering the loose ball for a touchdown in a 23-14 Ravens win on Thursday night. That it happened in a stadium just two hours' drive from his hometown of Daphne, Alabama, made it all the better.
