Cardinals hire veteran coach Clements as offense assistant
TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — Longtime NFL assistant Tom Clements has been hired as passing game coordinator/quarterbacks coach on the staff of new coach Kliff Kingsbury in Arizona.
The 65-year-old Clements, who has been out of the NFL the past two years, will be the primary offensive assistant because there will be no offensive coordinator on the staff, with Kingsbury calling plays and doing other coordinator-type duties.
Cardinals take a chance on ‘bright mind’ of Kingsbury
TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — Arizona Cardinals president Michael Bidwill went outside the traditional boundaries to find his new head coach, identifying Kliff Kingsbury as someone who can ignite the team's moribund offense and mold Josh Rosen into a dynamic NFL quarterback.
Cardinals hire ex-Texas Tech coach Kingsbury
PHOENIX (AP) — The Arizona Cardinals have hired former Texas Tech coach Kliff Kingsbury as their head coach, a move aimed at providing guidance for young quarterback Josh Rosen and resuscitating the worst offense in the NFL.
Fitzgerald adds new highlight in Cardinals’ home finale
GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Larry Fitzgerald took a back pass from Josh Rosen, shuffled a couple of steps right and set his feet.
Arizona's all-time leading receiver cocked his right arm back and let a not-quite-a-spiral fly into the desert air. The ball landed softly into the hands of Cardinals running back David Johnson, hitting him stride for a 32-yard touchdown.
Cardinals say no one is giving up despite 3-11 season
TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — Facing the final two games of a very bad season, the Arizona Cardinals are saying all the right things.
No one is giving up, they say, the effort is still there.
Cardinals fall 40-14 under Falcons’ “avalanche”
ATLANTA (AP) — It couldn't have gone much better for the Cardinals as they started Sunday's game in Atlanta by forcing two punts. In between, they drove 64 yards in eight plays to take a 7-0 lead on David Johnson's 1-yard run.
But everything went haywire from there.
The Falcons (5-9) scored the game's next 40 points — 21 off Arizona turnovers — and the Cardinals (3-11) fell 40-14 to a team that had lost its previous five games.
Inconsistency marks Josh Rosen’s first 10 NFL starts
TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — Inconsistency might be the best way to describe the young NFL career of Josh Rosen.
"I still think he's improving," coach Steve Wilks. "It's hard to say in that game (a 17-3 loss to Detroit on Sunday), but I still think he's progressing, moving forward."
But as he often does when discussing his rookie quarterback, Wilks qualified his praise.
Packers return home, try to keep fading playoff hopes alive
Aaron Rodgers and the Packers will try to keep fading playoff hopes alive on a snowy Sunday in Green Bay against Arizona and rookie quarterback Josh Rosen.
The Packers have lost four of their past five games, all on the road, and trail Chicago and Minnesota in the NFC North.
Jewish athletes condemn anti-Semitism after temple shooting
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — Memphis Grizzlies forward Omri Casspi, who was born in Israel, was early in his NBA career when he saw a picture of himself defaced with a swastika. Arizona Cardinals quarterback Josh Rosen grew up with kids who made fun of the size of his nose.
New England Patriots receiver Julian Edelman has heard anti-Semitic taunts during games, but he had been willing to write them off as opposing fans "just trying to get underneath your skin."
Dude! Cards’ rookie QB Rosen relates with Packers’ Rodgers
GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — Josh Rosen abides by "The Dude," and he's not referring directly to the character from the film, "The Big Lebowski," either.
Instead it's the nickname that the Arizona Cardinals' quarterback has given to Green Bay Packers star Aaron Rodgers, for some reason.
"It was just he's that guy, that man," Rosen said about Rodgers' resemblance to the laid-back movie character. "I guess I thought it was funny."
7th-round pick Cunningham now a starter at OT for Arizona
TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — The overall struggles of the Arizona Cardinals have cleared the way for opportunities for the youngest players on the roster.
Add Korey Cunningham to the list of 2018 draftees who are playing big roles for the team.
Rosen’s Cardinals battered on both sides of ball by Chargers
CARSON, Calif. (AP) — Josh Rosen won a California high school championship at StubHub Center five years ago. He also played competitive tennis at the complex's training facility while growing up in nearby Manhattan Beach.
His first trip to the suburban stadium as the Cardinals' rookie quarterback won't join those fond memories.
Instead, this 45-10 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers will loom as another low point in an increasingly rough year for Arizona (2-9).
Arizona QB Rosen undergoes tough first year on the job
TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — When Arizona plays at the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday, rookie Josh Rosen will make his eighth start at quarterback for the Cardinals. It's been a bumpy, up-and-down ride so far.
"I think he has been pretty good," coach Steve Wilks said. "I'd like for him to be a little bit more consistent. We all would, and he would probably tell you the same thing. The biggest thing is that we've got to make sure we limit the takeaways."
Chiefs thriving when it comes to pressure quarterbacks
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs had the Cardinals' Josh Rosen seeing red last week.
As in a whole lot of red jerseys right in his face.
The Chiefs sacked Arizona's rookie quarterback five times in their 26-14 victory. They hit him 13 times, forced a fumble and generally made life miserable on a cold afternoon at Arrowhead Stadium.
No wonder Rosen was asked quite sympathetically how he felt after the game.
Johnson, pass rush positive signs from Arizona’s loss at KC
TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — Although the Arizona Cardinals went down to their seventh defeat of the season, there were positive aspects to their 26-14 loss at Kansas City.
David Johnson broke loose for his best game of the year and the Cardinals defense harassed Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes better than anyone has all season.
Chiefs’ maligned defense shines in victory over Arizona
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs finally got Justin Houston back onto the field Sunday against Arizona, and the four-time Pro Bowl linebacker made one of the plays of the game when he picked off Cardinals quarterback Josh Rosen on a second-half screen pass.
The Chiefs also got safety Daniel Sorensen back from injured reserve, where he had resided since breaking his leg in training camp, and he five tackles while providing a hard-hitting presence.
Mahomes, Rosen to face off when Chiefs welcome Cardinals
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Patrick Mahomes Reunion Tour rolls on Sunday when the young, record-setting quarterback leads the high-flying Kansas City Chiefs against the Arizona Cardinals at Arrowhead Stadium.
Last week, Mahomes shredded the Cleveland Browns while outplaying their rookie quarterback, Baker Mayfield. The two met when Mahomes was being recruited to Texas Tech and Mayfield helped to serve as his host, and their relationship continued even when Mayfield transferred to Oklahoma.
Developing young QBs in NFL a tricky balancing act
NEW YORK (AP) — Start them right away? Ease 'em in? Have them sit a whole season?
When it comes to developing young quarterbacks in the NFL, it all depends on who you talk to.
Some teams think it's best to throw rookie QBs into the fire to learn on the job. Others prefer to gradually work them into the offense. Some say it's more beneficial to have them grab a cap and clipboard and take it all in from the sideline.
Rested Cardinals face daunting trip to Kansas City
TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — When the season started for the Arizona Cardinals, Sam Bradford was the quarterback and Mike McCoy was offensive coordinator.
Now both are gone.
On Saturday, while the team was enjoying a long weekend off, the Cardinals released Bradford, who lost his starting job after three games to rookie Josh Rosen and had been inactive for the last five. Bradford's departure came a little less than two weeks after McCoy was fired and replaced by quarterbacks coach Byron Leftwich.
Cardinals release QB Sam Bradford
TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — The Arizona Cardinals have released quarterback Sam Bradford.
Bradford, whose eight NFL seasons have been plagued by injuries, signed a one-year, $20 million contract — with $15 million guaranteed — in the offseason. He started the first three games before being replaced by rookie Josh Rosen.
Developing QB Rosen tops agenda for Cardinals
TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — Halfway through Steve Wilks' initial season as head coach, the Arizona Cardinals have two victories.
Both have come against the lowly San Francisco 49ers. Things get tougher from here on out. After taking this weekend off, the Cardinals play at Kansas City. The schedule also features games at the Los Angeles Chargers, Green Bay and Atlanta. And there's that final home game against the Los Angeles Rams.
Cardinals head into bye week relieved by 2nd victory
TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — After a tumultuous week, the Arizona Cardinals got a dramatic victory that greatly improves the team's mood heading into this coming week off.
"In the team meeting just now, you could tell the vibe was different," coach Steve Wilks said Monday.
Rookie Josh Rosen threw a pair of fourth-quarter touchdown passes, the last a 9-yarder to fellow rookie Christian Kirk with 34 seconds to play, and the Cardinals rallied to beat San Francisco 18-15.
Chants of ‘LAR-RY, LAR-RY’ mark Arizona’s comeback win
GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — The Arizona Cardinals were winning. The crowd was chanting "LAR-RY, LAR-RY!"
For a few noisy minutes, it was just like the good old days in Glendale.
Forget that this was a game between teams with two of the worst records in the NFL, Arizona's come-from-behind 18-15 victory over San Francisco was reason for celebration, the first win at home for first-year coach Steve Wilks.
49ers founder late in 18-15 loss to Cardinals
GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — C.J. Beathard lined up in the shotgun with 7 seconds left, hoping to get one more completion to set up a potential tying field goal.
He and the 49ers never got the chance.
The snap sailed over Beathard's head and San Francisco's chances went with it, punctuating a disheartening 18-15 loss to the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday.
Rookie Rosen rallies Cardinals past 49ers 18-15
GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Rookie Josh Rosen came into the huddle to start Arizona's final drive with a few choice words.
"We're going to win this (expletive) game," he said.
Lots of Broncos fans on hand to watch rout of Cardinals
GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — There were a lot of orange-clad Denver fans in the stands in Arizona.
They must have loved watching the Broncos beat down the host Cardinals 45-10 Thursday night.
"That was unbelievable," Denver quarterback Case Keenum said afterward. "It felt like a home game there for a lot of it. That was impressive. That was really cool."
Broncos return 2 interceptions for TDs, beat Cardinals 45-10
Von Miller vowed his Denver Broncos would kick the Arizona Cardinals' behind, except he didn't say behind.
Consider it a promise kept.
Emmanuel Sanders threw and caught touchdown passes, Denver returned two interceptions for first-quarter touchdowns and the Broncos snapped a four-game losing streak with a 45-10 rout Thursday night.
Spiraling Broncos head to Arizona on Thursday night
Things are spiraling in Denver. At least the Broncos won't have to worry about the cold and the snow when they journey to Arizona for a Thursday night game.
The Broncos have dropped four straight after opening with two wins. Their defense is dead last against the run and 27th overall.
With the Cardinals going with rookie quarterback Josh Rosen, the temptation will be to keep the ball on the ground as much as possible in this prime-time, uh, thriller.
