EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Michigan State guard Joshua Langford will miss the rest of the season because of his injured ankle.
Spartans coach Tom Izzo said in a statement Wednesday that the junior will likely need surgery. Langford has missed the last eight games. In the 13 games he did play — all starts — Langford averaged 15 points.
"Josh has a stress injury that we caught fairly early and we had hoped that, with treatment and rest, he would recover," Izzo said. "He has not."

EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Aaron Henry made the most of his opportunity to play in place of injured starter Joshua Langford.
The freshman forward had a season-high 12 points, helping No. 6 Michigan State beat No. 13 Maryland 69-55 on Monday night with balanced offense and stifling defense.

EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Nick Ward had 25 points and 10 rebounds, and Joshua Langford added 18 points to lead No. 10 Michigan State to a 106-82 victory over Florida Gulf Coast on Sunday night.
The Spartans (1-1) were barely challenged in their home opener and rebounded comfortably from a season-opening loss to Kansas. Michigan State led 59-35 at halftime on the strength of a dominating performance on the boards.

Michigan State thin on stars, heavy on experience for Izzo
EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Michigan State does not have the stars it did last season, when Miles Bridges and Jaren Jackson did enough to end up becoming top NBA picks.
While Tom Izzo lamented the loss of the talented duo, he sounded and looked excited about having several upperclassmen he can count on for a change. The Hall of Fame coach will have juniors Cassius Winston, Nick Ward and Joshua Langford along with a trio of seniors this season.
Michigan State and Michigan are Nos. 11 and 12, respectively, in ESPN's "Way-Too-Early" college basketball rankings for the 2018-19 season.
The top three teams are Kansas at No. 1, Duke at No. 2 and national champion Villanova at No. 3.
Purdue, at No. 24, is the only other Big Ten team in ESPN's Top 25.
Detroit — Michigan State had the home crowd on Sunday, but even that couldn't get the Spartans to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament.
For the third straight season, Michigan State failed to get out of the first weekend of the tournament as No. 11 Syracuse knocked off the third-seeded Spartans, 55-53, at Little Caesars Arena. The Orange advance to take on Duke Friday in the Midwest Regional semifinal in Omaha, Neb.
Detroit — When Joshua Langford came to Michigan State last season there was little doubt the McDonald's All-American could score. He did plenty of that while being named player of the year in Alabama five straight years.

EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Miles Bridges matched his career high with 33 points, and No. 2 Michigan State set a school record with 16 blocks while beating Houston Baptist 107-62 on Monday night.
The Spartans (11-1) have won 10 straight since losing to top-ranked Duke. Nick Ward had 20 points, six rebounds and four blocks, and Joshua Langford added 14 points. Jaren Jackson Jr. led Michigan State with six blocks and eight rebounds.
Detroit – Michigan State knew it would get Oakland's best shot on Saturday, and the No. 2 team in the nation got just that.
The Golden Grizzlies pushed the Spartans to the limit, leading in the second half before Michigan State took control late to earn the 86-73 victory in front of a sold-out crowd of 20,645 at Little Caesars Arena.
East Lansing — Quick turnarounds will be the norm this year in the Big Ten, and Michigan State is getting an early taste.
Like the rest of the conference, one-day preps are highlighting the fact the teams are fitting two Big Ten games into early December, a departure from past scheduling in an effort to get the conference tournament in a week early this season.

After No. 3 Michigan State beat No. 5 Notre Dame 81-63 on Thursday night, he looked and sounded uncharacteristically happy after a game.
"I shouldn't complain about one thing," Izzo said.
And that, even for Izzo, would have been hard to do.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Tom Izzo finally got the better of Roy Williams with a record performance Michigan State would like to replicate — and North Carolina would rather soon forget.
Sometimes playing ugly still matters.
"What I think this does is reassure our guys," Izzo said. "The way basketball is right now, it's all the pretty boys stuff but at the end of the day most of the good teams are still winning by doing the dirty work."
Portland, Ore. – Michigan State headed to the PK80 Invitational with a young team looking to learn something about winning in a tournament setting.
The only thing that stood in the way for the fourth-ranked Spartans on Sunday at the Moda Center was No. 9 North Carolina, a team that had steamrolled its way to the Victory Bracket championship and happened to have beaten Michigan State seven straight times.
Portland, Ore. — Michigan State was without Miles Bridge on Thursday night, so it needed someone to pick up the slack.
Enter junior Matt McQuaid, who entered the starting lineup for the first time this season and responded with a career-high 20 points to help No. 4 Michigan State overcome a sloppy first half to pull away and beat DePaul, 73-51, in the first round the of the PK80 Invitational at the Moda Center.
