Underdog UMBC falls to Kansas State 50-43
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — The ultimate underdog story is over, but this NCAA Tournament will always be remembered for the sweetest No. 16 in college basketball history.
UMBC's brief, but historic run ended with a 50-43 loss to ninth seeded Kansas State on Sunday night.
UMBC became the first 16 seed to beat a No. 1, destroying top-ranked Virginia 74-54 on Friday night. After pulling off an all-time sports stunner, the Retrievers ran out of magic against the Wildcats.
UMBC makes history with local ties
The University of Maryland, Baltimore County made history Friday night in the NCAA tournament and the Retrievers did so with a strong local flavor in the runaway win over the University of Virginia.
Jairus Lyles, who played at DeMatha Catholic in Hyattsville and hails from Silver Spring, contributed 28 points to the win as UMBC became the first No. 16 seed to defeat a No. 1 seed in the NCAA event.
UMBC downs Hartford 75-60, faces Vermont in finals
BALTIMORE (AP) — K.J. Maura scored 18 points with three 3-pointers and five assists, Arkel Lamar added 13 points with eight rebounds, and No. 2 seed UMBC beat third-seeded Hartford 75-60 in Tuesday night's America East Conference Tournament semifinal.
Jairus Lyles added 13 points with two steals and Jourdan Grant had 11 points for the Retrievers (23-10), who hit 10 3s and advance to Saturday's championship game against top-seeded Vermont.
BALTIMORE (AP) — Jairus Lyles scored 18 points and had five steals and Maryland-Baltimore County used a second-half surge to break a string of four straight post-season losses with an 89-77 defeat of UMass-Lowell in an America East Conference quarterfinal on Saturday.
The game was the first tournament game UMBC has hosted at the four-year-old RAC Center. The second-seeded Retrievers (22-10) advance to the AEC semifinal round Tuesday.
Sherburne helps UMBC hold off Binghamton 69-57
BALTIMORE (AP) — Joe Sherburne scored 18 points, including a dagger of a 3-pointer from the corner to blunt a comeback and Maryland-Baltimore County defeated Binghamton 69-57 Wednesday night.
Lyles has 31, UMBC edges Northern Kentucky 76-75
BALTIMORE (AP) — Jairus Lyles broke the 12th tie with a short bank shot with 1:32 to play, giving him 31 points, and Maryland Baltimore County edged Northern Kentucky 76-75 on Sunday.
Lavone Holland II, an 85 percent free throw shooter, made 1 of 2 for the Norse with 1:19 to play. Both teams missed opportunities until Holland got the final shot. He drove into the lane and challenged two defenders near the basket but his floater bounced off the back rim as time ran out.
UMBC cruises in final home opener, 93-62, in RAC Arena
BALTIMORE (AP) — Max Curran scored a career-high 21 points and pulled down 10 rebounds to lead Maryland-Baltimore County over Central Pennsylvania 93-62 on Thursday night.
Arkel Lamar added 14 points, Ishmail Jabbie and Max Portmann had 11 each and Joe Sherburne 10 for the Retrievers (1-2), who won in what was their 46th and final home opener in the RAC Arena with a new event center under construction. Jourdan Grant dished nine assists.
