Penske returns to Rolex with its own version of star cars
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) — At first glance, it appeared the days of the "star car" at the Rolex 24 at Daytona were over.
Then Roger Penske showed up.
Penske has brought his organization back to sports car racing and he'll field two stacked lineups in the Rolex 24 at Daytona later this month. Juan Pablo Montoya, Dane Cameron and Simon Pagenaud are in one car, with Helio Castroneves, Ricky Taylor and Graham Rahal in the other.

Gamble on Newgarden leads to 15th title for Roger Penske
SONOMA, Calif. (AP) — Roger Penske's drivers had just finished 1-2-3 in the IndyCar standings, and shaking up his lineup didn't seem to be a priority.
But with Josef Newgarden available in free agency, The Captain made a cutthroat move and bounced Indianapolis 500 winner Juan Pablo Montoya out of his ride to sign the up-and-coming American.
Almost a year to the day later, the shrewd move resulted in a 15th IndyCar championship for Team Penske.
Dixon within striking distance of 5th IndyCar championship
SONOMA, Calif. (AP) — The IndyCar season title was by no stretch a lock for Josef Newgarden. But when he hit the exit wall to pit road at Watkins Glen, it blew the championship race wide open and put Newgarden in the worst possible position.
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Juan Pablo Montoya and Oriol Servia gave the new IndyCars two thumbs up Tuesday.
They'll find out soon enough if anyone else agrees with the early reviews.
After spending the day testing the sleek, stylish cars on Indianapolis' 2.5-mile oval, the two veterans left the opening day screening by insisting the cars run even better than they look.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Roger Penske will return to sports car racing next year with two Prototype DPi entries in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship.
Team Penske will partner with Acura Motorsports for the two-car effort. Penske will field Acura ARX-05 Daytona Prototype international entries.
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Life should be less stressful for Juan Pablo Montoya these days.
You see, the two-time Indy 500 winner lost his full-time ride last year, and when other options never really materialized, he decided to join Team Penske in a part-time role. That meant hopping into the car for the Grand Prix of Indianapolis a couple weeks ago and again for Sunday's Indy 500.
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Helio Castroneves has spent the past six years chasing history at the Indianapolis 500, trying in vain to join A.J. Foyt, Rick Mears and Al Unser Sr. in an exclusive club of four-time winners.
He didn't anticipate making a different kind of history last weekend.
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Sebastien Bourdais posted the fastest lap of the week during Friday's Indianapolis 500 practice session and kept the top spot even after a two hour, 36-minute rain delay.
The French driver finished with a top speed of 233.116 mph. It was the second-fastest speed for a driver who wasn't drafting someone else as Dale Coyne Racing became the fifth different team in five days to lead a pack of more than 30 cars on the 2.5-mile oval.
Vettel Wins Nations Cup for Germany
MIAMI (AP) — After a disappointing showing on the first day of the Race of Champions, Sebastian Vettel bounced back in a big way.
Vettel single-handedly won the Nations Cup for Germany, winning all eight of his races while beating United States NASCAR drivers and brothers Kurt and Kyle Busch in the final.
"We didn't get to race against each other, so we still don't know who the better 'Busch' is," Kurt Busch said, "but we know Vettel can whack two Busches in one day."
Montoya accepts offer to drive for Roger Penske in Indy 500
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Juan Pablo Montoya has accepted an offer to race the Indianapolis 500 for Team Penske and will not drive full-time in IndyCar next season.
Montoya told The Associated Press on Tuesday the offer was the "best choice" for the Colombian. He's a two-time Indy 500 winner, including the 2015 crown driving for Penske.
IndyCar’s Josef Newgarden joining Team Penske
MOORESVILLE, N.C. (AP) — Roger Penske went 1-2-3 in the IndyCar standings this year. He figured he could have done better.
Team Penske added Josef Newgarden to its roster on Wednesday, giving the organization the top four finishing drivers in this season's IndyCar standings.
Newgarden, who finished fourth this year in the series, was the top free agent in IndyCar and becomes the first American driver on Penske's open wheel roster since Sam Hornish Jr. in 2007.
Josef Newgarden leaving Ed Carpenter for IndyCar promotion
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Josef Newgarden has informed Ed Carpenter he will not return to the IndyCar team next season.
Ed Carpenter Racing announced Newgarden's decision on Thursday. The American driver is thought to be highly coveted by Team Penske, which has been in limbo over the status of former Indianapolis 500 winner Juan Pablo Montoya. It could lead to a seat swap, with Newgarden going to Penske and Montoya moving to ECR.
Penske bounces back with 1-2-3 finish in IndyCar standings
SONOMA, Calif. (AP) — To call the 2015 season a disappointment for Team Penske would be an understatement. The organization had the positioning to win championships in both IndyCar and NASCAR, but came up empty in both series.
The IndyCar defeat was a tough one: Juan Pablo Montoya had led the standings wire-to-wire but lost the title on a tiebreaker to Scott Dixon because Dixon won the season finale.
Penske brings John Menard back to IndyCar for 10 races
SONOMA, Calif. (AP) — The bright yellow paint scheme of Menards will be a familiar fixture in IndyCar next season as the home improvement store returns to the series with 10 races of sponsorship for Simon Pagenaud.
The deal with Team Penske announced Saturday gives Roger Penske three sponsored cars for next season, but ended no speculation about his IndyCar lineup.
No matter what, Team Penske will win an IndyCar title
SONOMA, Calif. (AP) — Team Penske rolled into the title-deciding IndyCar race last season quite confident about its chances to win a championship. The organization had three drivers in contention that day and had led the series standings the entire year.
But nothing went as planned at Sonoma Raceway, where Team Penske choked away the title to Scott Dixon and Chip Ganassi Racing.
"It was just such a pity, that we allowed Ganassi to get that title," Will Power said Friday.
Juan Pablo Montoya still fast, bemoans bad luck
LONG POND, Pa. (AP) — Juan Pablo Montoya finds himself in a different place as the IndyCar Series returns to Pocono Raceway. With four races left in the season, he's not the man to beat.
There’s just something about Pocono Raceway
that suits Juan Pablo Montoya.
In two Verizon IndyCar Series races at the 2.5-mile triangular track in Long Pond, Montoya has one win and a third-place finish.
Even when he competed there in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, he won a pole and had one top-five and four top-10 finishes.
TORONTO (AP) — Will Power used pit strategy to grab his third victory of the season and close in on Team Penske teammate Simon Pagenaud in the race for the IndyCar championship.
Power's victory Sunday on the temporary road course at Exhibition Place was his third in four races, and he was second last week at Iowa. He has closed the gap on Pagenaud to 47 points in the standings, and the two are tied for the most wins in IndyCar this season.
