Bears hire DeLeone as inside linebackers coach
LAKE FOREST, Ill. (AP) — The Chicago Bears have hired Mark DeLeone as inside linebackers coach.
DeLeone spent the past six seasons on Andy Reid's staff in Kansas City and worked with Bears coach Matt Nagy from 2013-17. DeLeone coached inside linebackers this season after serving as the Chiefs' assistant linebackers coach (2015-17) and defensive quality control coach (2013-14).
Chiefs suddenly stingy defense gets test in AFC title game
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The only defense the Kansas City Chiefs played most of this season was, well, in defense of their own defense, which gave up so many yards and points that it became a running joke around the league.
Yes, the Chiefs scored in bushels. They also allowed points in bunches.
It will be dark and cold, perhaps absurdly cold, Sunday night in Kansas City. Arrowhead Stadium will be lit up, though, and the winner of the Patriots-Chiefs game will head to Atlanta for the Super Bowl.
Chiefs’ struggling defense gets Colts’ potent offense next
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs' defense had been hearing all season about how bad they were, and how they were the biggest threat to an offensive juggernaut falling short of reaching the Super Bowl.
Then they shut down the Oakland Raiders in Week 17.
Chiefs look ahead to divisional round aware of playoff flops
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Justin Houston wouldn't let the question come out before cutting it off. Fullback Anthony Sherman was even less accommodating than the bruising linebacker of the Kansas City Chiefs.
Chiefs’ Mahomes among front-runners for league MVP honors
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Justin Houston has played long enough for the Kansas City Chiefs to have heard Arrowhead Stadium roaring in victory and silenced in defeat, along with just about every decibel in between.
What floated through the crisp December air on Sunday night was something new.
It started quietly, grew slowly and finally reached a crescendo: "MVP! "MVP! MVP!"
49ers rookie T McGlinchey in for another tough test vs. Mack
SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — The schedule makers dealt Mike McGlinchey a rude welcome to the NFL.
The rookie right tackle for the San Francisco 49ers had three of his first four games on the road, including matchups against elite pass rushers like Minnesota's Danielle Hunter, Kansas City's Justin Houston and Melvin Ingram of the Chargers.
Looking back at that experience now, McGlinchey acknowledges it was almost crippling.
Jackson sustains ankle injury in OT loss to Chiefs
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs finally tracked down Lamar Jackson when it mattered most.
After watching the elusive Ravens quarterback scoot all over the field Sunday, Justin Houston and Dee Ford combined on an overtime sack that left Jackson holding his ankle. He then had to watch from the sideline as Robert Griffin III threw two incompletions and Kansas City escaped with a 27-24 victory Sunday.
Chiefs thriving when it comes to pressure quarterbacks
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs had the Cardinals' Josh Rosen seeing red last week.
As in a whole lot of red jerseys right in his face.
The Chiefs sacked Arizona's rookie quarterback five times in their 26-14 victory. They hit him 13 times, forced a fumble and generally made life miserable on a cold afternoon at Arrowhead Stadium.
No wonder Rosen was asked quite sympathetically how he felt after the game.
Chiefs’ maligned defense shines in victory over Arizona
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs finally got Justin Houston back onto the field Sunday against Arizona, and the four-time Pro Bowl linebacker made one of the plays of the game when he picked off Cardinals quarterback Josh Rosen on a second-half screen pass.
The Chiefs also got safety Daniel Sorensen back from injured reserve, where he had resided since breaking his leg in training camp, and he five tackles while providing a hard-hitting presence.
Chiefs could get Houston, Sorensen on field vs Cardinals
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs could be getting some much-needed help for their ailing, leaky defense when linebacker Justin Houston and safety Daniel Sorensen are expected to play against the Arizona Cardinals.
Houston has missed four straight games after hurting his hamstring, while Sorensen was added to the active roster this week after landing on injured reserve in training camp with a broken leg.
Chiefs, Bengals missing key pieces for Sunday night showdown
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs are missing top pass rusher Justin Houston and safety Eric Berry along with starting center Mitch Morse for their Sunday night game against the banged-up Cincinnati Bengals.
Houston is out with a hamstring injury and Berry has been hobbled by a heel injury since the start of training camp. Morse sustained a concussion in last week's loss in New England.
Bengals, Chiefs could be missing key players to injuries
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Cincinnati Bengals and Kansas City Chiefs could be without several starters on their already porous defenses when they meet Sunday night at Arrowhead Stadium.
The Bengals ruled out first-round pick Darqueze Dennard, their best slot cornerback, with a shoulder injury Friday. They also ruled out linebacker Nick Vigil with a knee injury and listed safety Shawn Williams as questionable with a concussion
Chiefs lose wide receiver Thomas to broken leg in practice
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs wide receiver DeAnthony Thomas broke a leg during practice and could miss the rest of the season, the latest in a string of injuries to befall the unbeaten team.
The Chiefs also listed Justin Houston as doubtful for Sunday night's game against the Patriots in New England with a hamstring injury. Free safety Eric Murray has been ruled out with an ankle injury and offensive lineman Laurent Duvernay-Tardif is out with a broken bone in his leg.
Chiefs sign ex-Browns LB Nate Orchard to help ailing defense
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Nate Orchard has gone from a highly drafted pick of the Cleveland Browns to a featured star on HBO's documentary series "Hard Knocks" to the couch as an unemployed linebacker in the NFL.
Now, he's suiting up for a team with Super Bowl aspirations.
After injury woes, Chiefs’ Houston out to find lost form
ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) — Patrick Mahomes II dropped back to pass during a recent Chiefs practice, and before the new quarterback even had time to set up, fearsome pass rusher Justin Houston was staring him in the eyes.
Chiefs hope illness has run its course ahead of playoffs
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs' practice facility near Arrowhead Stadium is named for the University of Kansas Hospital, which is altogether fitting given the state of the team the past few years.
Lysol would be another fitting sponsor.
That's because the Chiefs almost certainly doused the building in disinfectant while they were on the road for their regular-season finale, a 27-24 victory over the Denver Broncos.
Chiefs activate OLB Hali from PUP list, waive CB White
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs have activated linebacker Tamba Hali from the physically unable to perform list, though it's uncertain whether the five-time Pro Bowl selection will play Sunday in Dallas.
Hali missed the entire offseason program and training camp to rest and rehabilitate his ailing knees. He practiced for the first time Thursday and was taken off the PUP list Saturday.
The Chiefs waived cornerback D.J. White to make room for Hali on the 53-man roster.
Chiefs linebacker Tamba Hali returns to practice
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs linebacker Tamba Hali returned to practice for the first time since the end of last season, though it's unclear when he will be activated from the physically unable to perform list.
Hali's return Thursday begins a three-week window in which the Chiefs must decide whether to activate Hali or shut him down for the season. The 33-year-old Hali missed the offseason program and all of training camp to rest and rehabilitate his ailing knees.
Chiefs back to producing turnovers in big Monday night win
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The sight was oh-so-familiar to Chiefs fans: That familiar speed of Jamaal Charles hitting the hole, the talent that made him one of the NFL's best running backs during nearly a decade in Kansas City.
When he coughed up the ball Monday night, it was another familiar sight.
Not that Charles fumbled, though he had his share of those over the years.
Chiefs’ Kelce, Houston return to practice ahead of Steelers
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce and pass rusher Justin Houston were back on the practice field Friday and should be ready to go when Kansas City plays the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday.
Kelce cleared the NFL's concussion protocol earlier in the week. Houston had calf spasms.
Wide receivers Tyreek Hill and Albert Wilson will also play after both were limited Thursday, coach Andy Reid said. Hill had a hamstring issue and Wilson had a knee injury.
Chiefs last unbeaten left through first 4 weeks of season
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The biggest reason the Kansas City Chiefs are the last remaining unbeaten team through the first four weeks of the NFL season is that someone long ago decided games should be 60 minutes.
The Patriots sure wish they lasted 30. Ditto the Redskins.
The Chiefs showed their second-half chops once again on Monday night, rallying from an early 10-point deficit against Washington.
Tribute to Vegas shooting victims before Redskins-Chiefs
KANSAS CITY, Missouri (AP) — The Redskins and Chiefs stood for a moment of silence before the national anthem, and flags flew at half-staff over Arrowhead Stadium, to honor victims of the Las Vegas shooting before Monday night's NFL game between Washington and Kansas City.

Smith, Chiefs start quick, beat Chargers 24-10 to go 3-0
CARSON, Calif. (AP) — For the first quarter and a half, the Kansas City Chiefs looked like maybe the best team in the NFL.
Alex Smith was crisp and accurate in throwing two touchdown passes. The Chiefs intercepted Philip Rivers three times, twice by Terrance Mitchell.
Then it turned into a defensive slog, before the Chiefs (3-0) came alive in the final minutes to put away a 24-10 victory against the Los Angeles Chargers (0-3).
Von Miller gets top spot in AP’s outside linebacker rankings
DENVER (AP) — With his Cardinals preparing to face the Cowboys this weekend, Arizona coach Bruce Arians was asked what he might take away from the Denver Broncos' bashing of Ezekiel Elliott.
"Well, if I could have Von Miller," Arians deadpanned, "I'd be happy."
Chiefs take over top spot in AP Pro32 poll; Falcons are 2nd
NEW YORK (AP) — Of the eight teams off to 2-0 starts this season, perhaps the most impressive has been the Kansas City Chiefs.
The Chiefs went into Foxborough and handled the New England Patriots in the NFL's regular-season opener and followed that up with a win over the Philadelphia Eagles in their home opener.
Chiefs’ Chris Jones makes big statement in win over Philly
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chris Jones has an uncanny ability to talk just about as quickly as he sheds woebegone offensive linemen, the words spilling out of his mouth in a humorous and sometimes unintelligible manner.
Take, for instance, the Chiefs defensive tackle making his first career interception.
Hub Arkush: Chicago Bears must start street fight, not track meet, to upset Falcons
CHICAGO — Can the Chicago Bears beat the Atlanta Falcons Sunday at Soldier Field?
What were the odds on Kansas City knocking off the Patriots Thursday night in Foxboro?
The problems for the Bears, of course, are that Mike Glennon doesn’t appear to be Alex Smith and Chicago has no receivers likely to imitate Tyreek Hill.
On the other hand, the Chiefs have no one to match Jordan Howard, and I’m not positive Tarik Cohen won’t have a few Kareem Hunt moments before the season is over.
Chiefs offense dazzles in surprising upset of Patriots
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs surprised just about everyone with their season-opening win in New England, especially the reigning Super Bowl champs, who had their festive night celebrating another Lombardi Trophy spoiled by Alex Smith and Co.
Most surprising, though, was how the Chiefs sprung the upset.
Chiefs banking on Justin Houston to live up to contract
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Justin Houston had just put together the most dominant season by a pass rusher in Kansas City Chiefs' history, piling up 22 sacks and coming within a half sack of the NFL record, when then-general manager John Dorsey rewarded him with a lavish contract.
Six years, $101 million and $52.5 million of it guaranteed.
Chiefs’ linebackers could emerge as league’s best unit
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Justin Houston was a bit late to practice over the weekend because he had to take one of the league's random drug tests, and the star linebacker wasn't told about it until he'd just gone to the bathroom.
His brief absence still caused quite a stir on social media.
If nothing else, the humorous episode showed just how closely watched the linebacker position will be in Kansas City this season.
ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) — Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Tamba Hali started training camp on the physically unable to perform list.
But he was still a center of attention.
Earlier this week, just a couple of days before players started reporting to St. Joseph for training camp, Hali vented frustration with playing time last season and his displeasure with teammates who did not show up for the team's Optional Team Activities (OTAs).
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Alex Smith has gone through hundreds off offseason workouts with Eric Berry, Justin Houston and Marcus Peters. Yet the Chiefs quarterback felt compelled to introduce himself Tuesday.
Call it some good-natured ribbing after the three defensive stars skipped voluntary workouts.
"Didn't know if they'd forgotten us here," Smith said with a grin. "Been awhile."

Steelers’ Mathews out; Chiefs have Houston for playoff game
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Steelers are missing defensive end Ricardo Mathews because of a lingering ankle injury for their divisional playoff game against the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday night.
Mathews hurt his ankle in Pittsburgh's regular-season finale and was inactive for last weekend's wild-card win over Miami. But he returned to practice this week and was questionable for the game.
Pittsburgh Steelers have the O-line to protect Roethlisberger vs. Kansas City Chiefs’ pass rush
The Kansas City Chiefs terrorized quarterbacks in the three seasons leading up to this one.
Sixth in 2013 with 47 sacks.
Fifth in 2014 with 46.
Fourth in 2015 with 47.
That's 140 sacks in three seasons.
But then 28 in 2016 to finish 28th. It's caused the recent storyline in Pittsburgh, in anticipation of the Steelers-Chiefs playoff showdown Sunday at Arrowhead, to read that the Chiefs' pass rush might just be overrated.
Chiefs’ Houston limited in practice ahead of playoff game
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs linebacker Justin Houston was limited in the final practice for Sunday's divisional playoff game against Pittsburgh, though his game status was left blank on the final injury report.
That means Houston should be available for the first time since a loss to Tennessee on Dec. 18.
Putting pressure on Big Ben could be key to Chiefs victory
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs have been cautiously nursing the surgically repaired left knee of star pass rusher Justin Houston back to health. He should be ready just in time to face Pittsburgh on Sunday.
To which Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger replied: "I think Justin should take his time, think about his health and his family, and take one more week off."
"Well," Chiefs coach Andy Reid countered, "Ben's a smart guy."
Tyreek Hill is Chiefs’ playmaker as playoffs begin

Chiefs’ Justin Houston ruled out for game at San Diego
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs ruled out Justin Houston for Sunday's game in San Diego with swelling in his surgically repaired left knee, throwing into question the four-time Pro Bowl pass rusher's status for the playoffs.
Chiefs’ Houston, Broncos’ top 2 tight ends out for showdown
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs are missing top pass rusher Justin Houston and the Broncos are without tight ends Virgil Green and A.J. Derby for their important AFC West showdown on Sunday night.
Broncos safety T.J. Ward is also out with a concussion, while linebacker Brandon Marshall misses his third straight game with a pulled hamstring. They are joined on the inactive list by linebackers Quentin Gause and Vontarrius Dora and offensive lineman Connor McGovern.
Chiefs’ Houston questionable against Titans with knee injury
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs pass rusher Justin Houston is questionable for Sunday's game against Tennessee with soreness in his left knee, which he had surgically repaired in February.
Houston missed practice with an illness earlier in the week before missing Thursday's workout with the knee issue. He returned to the practice field Friday on a limited basis.
