Minnesota Twins hire retired Justin Morneau as assistant
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Minnesota Twins have hired the recently retired Justin Morneau as a special assistant.
The team said Wednesday Morneau will become the fourth former Twins player from his generation to get the job, joining Michael Cuddyer, Torii Hunter and LaTroy Hawkins.
The 36-year-old Morneau will be involved in the amateur draft and be a resource for player acquisitions.
Justin Morneau officially ended his 14-season major league baseball career on Wednesday during a retirement ceremony at Target Field.
I was fortunate to live my dream every day, said Morneau, 36. It wasnt taken for granted. To achieve that goal and that dream is really something special.
All I did was play baseball. I really never wanted to do anything else.
He will be a special assistant in Twins baseball organizations, Twins chief baseball officer Derek Falvey announced.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Justin Morneau, the 2006 AL MVP and Minnesota Twins first baseman whose career was derailed by concussion symptoms, is retiring after 1,603 hits and 247 home runs in 14 major league seasons.
The Twins confirmed Morneau's retirement on Monday. They scheduled a news conference with Morneau and team officials for Wednesday.
Morneau didn't play in 2017. He appeared in 58 games for the Chicago White Sox in 2016.
Like most teams this winter, the Twins have made few major changes to their roster. But their front-office lineup keeps getting stronger.

Rodon (5-8) allowed the run and five hits in six-plus innings to go 3-0 with a 1.47 ERA in his last five starts.
