Broncos go into bye with coach on hot seat, flickering hopes
DENVER (AP) — Moments after Brandon McManus pushed his winning attempt wide right, the Denver Broncos were calling him "our guy" and "the best kicker in the league" and "a good dude."
No finger pointing. Not at the current moment, anyway.
McManus sailed a 51-yard field goal try wide in the final seconds as the Broncos lost 19-17 to the Houston Texans on Sunday. Denver fell to 3-6 with barely flickering playoff hopes and a coach on the hot seat heading into a bye week.
Hunt’s hurdling TD catch helps Chiefs to sweep of Broncos
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Kareem Hunt did everything but score on his best run against the Bengals, spinning away from a pair of would-be tacklers and hurdling another before getting dragged down short of the goal line.
He made sure to cap another incredible run against Denver with a score.
ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — One thing that Peyton Manning, Brock Osweiler, Trevor Siemian, Mark Sanchez and Paxton Lynch all quickly learned in Denver was that nothing comes easy against the Broncos' "No Fly Zone" secondary at practice.
It's something opposing quarterbacks discover on game day.
Aqib Talib and T.J. Ward are no longer here, but Chris Harris Jr., Darian Stewart, Justin Simmons and Bradley Roby remain.
Broncos place safety Justin Simmons on IR
ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — Justin Simmons' breakout season is over because of a sprained left ankle he sustained while celebrating a rare big play by the Denver Broncos in their first victory in two months.
The Broncos placed Simmons on injured reserve Wednesday. He was injured in Denver's 23-0 win over the Jets on Sunday, their first win in 70 days.
Broncos coach says he hasn’t lost faith in his kicker
ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — Brandon McManus has been anything but money since signing an $11.25 million extension last month.
The fourth-year pro has missed a field goal in each of Denver's three home games so far, including a 29-yarder Sunday that would have removed much of the drama from the Broncos' 16-10 win over the Oakland Raiders .

Broncos move on without founding member of No Fly Zone
ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — Aqib Talib laughed at the audacity of the question.
Of course, this Denver Broncos secondary is still the "No Fly Zone" after the release of three-time Pro Bowl strong safety T.J. Ward, who signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
"Yeah, ain't nobody flying," Talib said. "They still can't fly. The name doesn't change."

Joseph says he’s not aware of any T.J. Ward trade talks
ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — If the "No Fly Zone" is about to lose one of its pilots, Broncos coach Vance Joseph isn't aware.
Joseph said Tuesday he hadn't heard anything about T.J. Ward being on the trading block following a report from the NFL Network that the Broncos have been in talks about dealing the Pro Bowl strong safety who's entering the final year of his contract.
"He's one of our better players," Joseph said. "So, I would be surprised."
Will Harris learned what it takes to be a standout defensive back in the Atlantic Coast Conference and saw the rewards that come with the job.
The 6-foot-2, 210-pound, strong safety from Suwanee, Ga., will assume the command position at the back end of the Eagles defense when BC opens the season on Friday, Sept. 1, at Northern Illinois.
“He’s big and fast and he’s done a great job and he’s had a great camp,” said BC coach Steve Addazio following yesterday’s practice at Alumni Stadium.
Broncos, Patriots have both hurdled the long snapper
ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — The rematch of last year's AFC championship this weekend will once again feature Tom Brady trying to avoid Von Miller's grasp and Aqib Talib's reach. There's a new wrinkle to the Patriots-Broncos rivalry this year, though.
Both teams have players who have hurdled the long snapper to block kicks this season, and while odds are slim it'll happen again Sunday, these players' athleticism will be on display in the kicking game or on defense.
Elway exudes confidence about another Super Bowl run
DENVER (AP) — He's watched draft picks flounder and free agents falter, seen some of his best players sidelined by injuries and witnessed Peyton Manning's successor struggle to stay safe behind a spongy offensive line.
Yet, John Elway's Denver Broncos are 7-3 at their bye.

Denver defense opportunistic in 25-23 triumph over Saints
NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Broncos safety Darian Stewart was in the right place at the right time, as Denver defenders often seem to be.
Shutting down quarterback Drew Brees for four quarters was always going to be a tall order, particularly with starting quarterback Aqib Talib and starting defensive end Derek Wolfe injured. Still, Denver's dynamic defense produced four pivotal turnovers in a wild 25-23 victory over the previously surging Saints on Sunday.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Justin Simmons' perfectly timed leap over Saints long snapper Justin Drescher brought the celebration inside the Superdome to a stunning halt, and sent the Broncos galloping the other way for a first-of-its kind victory.
Just like Denver drew it up.
