Jaguars sign kicker Forbath in case Lambo can’t play

Lambo, the most accurate kicker in franchise history, injured his right groin in practice Thursday.
The Jaguars (4-9) placed rookie linebacker Leon Jacobs (quadriceps) on injured reserve to make room for Forbath on the 53-man roster.

Vikes cut kicker Kai Forbath; rookie Daniel Carlson gets job
EAGAN, Minn. (AP) — The Minnesota Vikings have completed their plan to turn over their kicking duties to rookie Daniel Carlson, releasing veteran Kai Forbath with two weeks remaining in the preseason.
For all the training camp drills and exhibition game extra points the Vikings can give Carlson, there's no way for him to experience the pressure and scrutiny that comes with the job on a championship-chasing team.
EAGAN, Minn. (AP) — Daniel Carlson's career-best field goal at Auburn was 56 yards. His confidence range indoors reaches 65. During pre-draft training in the high altitude of his home state Colorado, he said, even a 75-yard kick was makeable.
The Minnesota Vikings were so enamored with that strong leg they used a fifth-round pick on the 6-foot-5, 213-pound Carlson, a bold enough move to suggest he'll be the place kicker this season and not incumbent Kai Forbath.
EAGAN, Minn. (AP) — The Minnesota Vikings have re-signed kicker Kai Forbath to a one-year contract after a strong finish to his 2017 season.
The deal finalized Wednesday maintains the stability the 30-year-old Forbath has brought to the position since replacing Blair Walsh midway through the 2016 season.
The Vikings are keeping kicker Kai Forbath on a one-year deal, a league source confirmed to the Star Tribune.
Forbath, 30, was plucked off a thin free-agent market as the Vikings and Dolphins were the only teams remaining without a kicker under contract.
With Kai Forbath unsigned, Vikings one of only two teams without a kicker under contract
For $84 million guaranteed, touchdowns will be expected of new Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins.
But chances are extremely good that not every purple possession in 2018 will result in six points. Someone will need to handle the three-pointers, not to mention the point-afters.
That someone could be Kai Forbath. The Vikings havent closed the door on the free agent whos kicked for them the past 1 andfrac12; seasons. Then again, they havent exactly flung open the door and embraced him, either.

The Latest: Vikings lead Saints 20-14 early in 4th quarter
The Latest on the NFL playoffs on divisional weekend (all times EST):
The Vikings expanded their lead in their divisional round game at Minnesota.
Kai Forbath's second field goal, a 49-yarder in the early in the fourth quarter gave the Vikings a 20-14 lead over the Saints.
The winner advances to the NFC championship game at Philadelphia.
Drew Brees and the Saints are getting closer in their divisional round game at Minnesota.
The Vikings are here because of the way their defense has played — particularly at home — and they will get to the NFC Championship Game because of a group that can corral one of the league’s most balanced attacks. Give this game to the Vikings, on the late Kai Forbath kick that Ryan Longwell never got to try. Prediction: Vikings 23, Saints 20.
Vikings put faith in Forbath’s leg, as Lutz satisfies Saints
EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. (AP) — Kai Forbath was planning to move into an apartment in New Orleans the week of the 2016 season opener, when a phone call from the Saints quickly turned his day upside down.
The players were off from practice, so Forbath had no doubt about why he'd been summoned to team headquarters five days before the first game.
Coach Sean Payton delivered the disappointing news that the Saints had decided to sign rookie Wil Lutz and release Forbath to make room.
Vikings kicker Kai Forbath is cool, calm and hoping to dodge playoff infamy
Mike Zimmer has tools in his Winter Park office to thwart the ghosts of Vikings playoff past a crystal ball and a wood spirit gifted by good samaritans.
He makes nothing of a so-called Vikings curse, but if there is one, it has rested on the foot of kickers.
The list of undrafted free agents making an impact on the Vikings this season is lengthy. Case Keenum, Adam Thielen, Marcus Sherels, Andrew Sendejo, C.J. Ham, Jeremiah Sirles, Nick Easton, Kai Forbath, Ryan Quigley and Tom Johnson were all passed over in the NFL draft.
Vikings special teams get to reboot against Falcons with Ben Gedeon leading the way
It wasn’t a good sign when Lions returner T.J. Jones slipped past Vikings linebacker Eric Wilson, sprinting up the sideline for a 35-yard return to start a poor day for the Vikings’ special teams on Thanksgiving Day in Detroit.
Linebacker Ben Gedeon had to run from his kickoff spot at “R1,” or the closest to kicker Kai Forbath on the right side, across the field and knock Jones out of bounds.
Small names, big plays: Anthony Harris, Stephen Weatherly make huge impact in Vikings win over Rams
On the NFL Mark Craig
The two biggest plays of Sundays game were made in the red zone by backup defenders who were only on the field because of injuries to players ahead of them.
On consecutive snaps late in the first half of a 7-7 game, Stephen Weatherlys tackle for loss at the 20-yard line was followed by Anthony Harris forced fumble and recovery at the 1.
Vikings’ Kai Forbath is booting for distance, accuracy
Kai Forbath has been one of the Vikings unheralded standouts this season and having the best field-goal kicking season of his career.
His 22 field goals, out of 23 attempts, are already the second most of his career behind the 24 he made for Washington in 2014. His 95.7 field-goal percentage is second in the league, trailing only Greg Zuerlein of the Rams (96.6), who will face the Vikings on Sunday. Zuerlein leads the league in made field goals with 28.

NFL HALFWAY: Strong as ever, kickers remain a key to success
EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. (AP) — When the Minnesota Vikings signed Kai Forbath last season, he'd gone 10½ months without kicking in a meaningful game.
Keenum, Forbath help Vikings win 33-16 vs. Browns in London
LONDON (AP) — Case Keenum had one of the more miserable performances of his career the last time he played a game at Twickenham Stadium. That was not the case on Sunday.
Keenum threw for two touchdowns and Kai Forbath made four field goals as the Minnesota Vikings defeated the Cleveland Browns 33-16 in the last of four games held this season in Britain.
Vikings’ Forbath named NFC special teams player of week
EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. (AP) — Minnesota Vikings kicker Kai Forbath has been named NFC special teams player of the week after kicking six field goals in Sunday's victory over Baltimore.
Forbath had a career-best 18 points in the Vikings' 24-16 victory. His six field goals included a 52-yarder and a 51-yarder.
It's the second time in his career Forbath has won the award.
Minnesota Vikings: Kai Forbath’s six field goals boost Vikings in win over Ravens
MINNEAPOLIS — Neither distance nor frequency will increase the three-point value of field goals, but Kai Forbath's long-range accuracy Sunday meant more to the offensively challenged Vikings than a hard number.
Forbath became the first Minnesota kicker to convert six field goals in a game since Gary Anderson 19 years ago, and the Vikings needed every one of those 18 points to pull out a 24-16 victory at U.S. Bank Stadium.
Forbath having a field (goal) day for Vikings
EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. (AP) — Forced by Blair Walsh's struggles to switch kickers last year, the Minnesota Vikings have their field goal tries back on track with Kai Forbath.
Those pesky extra points are, well, another matter. Forbath's career-most six field goals in as many attempts, including two from 50-plus yards, were the difference for the Vikings in their 24-16 victory over Baltimore on Sunday.
Vikings defense dominates in 24-16 win over Ravens
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Minnesota Vikings offense is down its starting quarterback, star rookie running back and best receiver.
With a defense like they have, the Vikings have not missed a beat.
Everson Griffen had two of Minnesota's five sacks and Latavius Murray rushed for 113 yards and a touchdown to help the Vikings to a 24-16 victory over the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday.
Kai Forbath’s six field goals don’t trump six Vikings extra points, but still special
Kai Forbaths busy day began before attempting the first of his career-high six field goals Sunday for the Vikings 24-16 win over the Ravens.
Only a couple minutes into the game, Vikings specialists were hastily setting up the field goal net on the sideline so Forbath could get loose. Marcus Sherels had returned the opening punt 46 yards to the Ravens 36-yard line, which meant Forbath could be called on any minute.
Murray, Vikings defense plow through Ravens, 24-16
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Even though he was signed to help the Vikings replace Adrian Peterson, Latavius Murray has been behind nearly from the day he stepped foot in Minnesota.
Plowing through the Baltimore Ravens as he did on Sunday should help him catch up in a hurry.
Murray rushed for 113 yards and a touchdown and Kai Forbath kicked six field goals to lift the Vikings to a 24-16 victory over the Ravens.
Keenum leads 3 scoring drives, Vikings beat Bears 20-17
CHICAGO (AP) — Case Keenum gave the Vikings the lift they needed, and that was just enough to spoil Mitchell Trubisky's highly anticipated debut.
Keenum led three second-half scoring drives after Sam Bradford's troublesome left knee flared up again, and the Minnesota Vikings beat Trubisky and the Chicago Bears 20-17 on Monday night.
Keenum has 3 TD passes and Vikings top Buccaneers 34-17
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Case Keenum gave Minnesota a brilliant performance in relief of Sam Bradford, passing for three touchdowns and a career-high 369 yards without a turnover to guide the Vikings to a 34-17 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday.
Stefon Diggs had 173 yards receiving and caught two of Keenum's throws for scores, one short and one long.
Dalvin Cook produced 169 total yards plus his first NFL touchdown, which capped a 75-yard drive by the Vikings (2-1) to start the game.
Keenum leads Vikings to 17-10 preseason win over Bills
ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) — Quarterback Teddy Bridgewater need not rush back from injury after Case Keenum showed glimpses of being a capable backup in the Minnesota Vikings' 17-10 preseason-opening win over the Buffalo Bills on Thursday night.
Taking over for starter Sam Bradford, Keenum went 11 of 16 for 121 yards. The sixth-year player engineered a pair of scoring drives — both set up by passes to rookie receiver Stacy Coley.
MANKATO, Minn. (AP) — Whether they pick Kai Forbath or Marshall Koehn, the Minnesota Vikings badly need their kicker to come through after all those points squandered last season.
Koehn sure delivered last year.
While Forbath was settling in after a midseason switch from Blair Walsh in Minnesota, Koehn was making carpet and tile drop-offs for a flooring company in eastern Iowa. He lived with his parents and tried to keep his leg, mind and body in shape on the side between deliveries.
Vikings add kicker Koehn, punter Symmank to offseason roster
EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. (AP) — The Minnesota Vikings have signed kicker Marshall Koehn and punter Taylor Symmank to reserve/future contracts, signaling interest in preseason competition for the specialists.
Vikings beat Jaguars 25-16 for 1st road win since September
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Just about everything that could have gone wrong for Minnesota did.
The Vikings lost the turnover battle, failed to score twice inside the 1-yard line and allowed a fourth-down conversion on a fake punt. Those kinds of mistakes normally would doom a team. Not against the hapless Jacksonville Jaguars.
Vikings beat Jaguars 25-16 for 1st road win since September
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Matt Asiata scored on a short touchdown run, Kai Forbath kicked four field goals and the Minnesota Vikings beat the Jacksonville Jaguars 25-16 on Sunday, winning for just the second time in nine weeks.
Asiata had a chance to score three times, but he was stopped on a fourth-and-goal run in the second quarter and fumbled at the goal line in the fourth.
Kickers put excitement into extra points with their misses
The idea was to put some excitement into NFL extra points. On Sunday, it became unwise to head to the fridge when the kickers came in.
A dozen times in Week 11, those 1-pointers became no-pointers. Blame the swirling winds. Blame the suspect blocking. Blame sloppy holding.
New kicker Kai Forbath finds familiar crew with Vikings
EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. (AP) — Kai Forbath spent his first morning in Minnesota at the stadium where he'll make his debut with the Vikings, testing his footing on the artificial turf and gawking a bit at the light-filled, luxurious building that will give him the advantage of a controlled climate.
Such conditions are every kicker's preference. The same goes for the fresh start Forbath will be afforded with his new team and its discouraged fan base.
Vikings make Forbath signing official after cutting Walsh
EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. (AP) — The Minnesota Vikings have finalized their contract with kicker Kai Forbath, their replacement for Blair Walsh.
Vikings keep struggling Walsh after working out kickers
EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. (AP) — The Minnesota Vikings have held off on switching kickers for now, with the struggling Blair Walsh still in place.
After holding tryouts for several free agents, the Vikings didn't put any signings on the league's transaction log on Tuesday. NFL Network reported the Vikings will keep Walsh after working out six kickers including Randy Bullock and Kai Forbath.
Saints change kickers, make several other roster moves
METAIRIE, La. (AP) — The New Orleans Saints have changed kickers, cutting veteran Kai Forbath on Tuesday and signing Wil Lutz, a rookie who spent the preseason with Baltimore.
Lutz was a four-year kicker at Georgia State, where he also handled punts his senior season and was nominated for the Ray Guy Award.
The move comes days after it appeared that Forbath, who took over as the Saints' place kicker last season, had won a preseason competition with Connor Barth for his job.
Barth, McCain among final Saints cuts; Hoomanawanui on IR
METAIRIE, La. (AP) — The New Orleans Saints placed tight end Michael Hoomanawanui on injured reserve and cut 21 players — including recently acquired offensive lineman Khalif Barnes and defensive end Chris McCain — to trim their roster to the regular-season maximum of 53.
One of the moves made by Saturday's deadline was the release of kicker Connor Barth, meaning Kai Forbath will retain the job he took over during last season.
