Kansas City Southern: 4Q Earnings Snapshot
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) _ Kansas City Southern (KSU) on Friday reported fourth-quarter earnings of $161.1 million.
The Kansas City, Missouri-based company said it had net income of $1.59 per share. Earnings, adjusted for non-recurring gains, came to $1.56 per share.
The results matched Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of nine analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was also for earnings of $1.56 per share.
Holiday Express Train begins multistate journey
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — A festive holiday train has started its journey through Louisiana, Mississippi, Texas, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Illinois and Missouri.
The Kansas City Southern Holiday Express Train started its journey last week in Shreveport, Louisiana. After stops in more than 20 cities, the trip will end Dec. 14 at Union Station in Kansas City, where the six-car train will remain on display through Dec. 18.

On a per-share basis, the Kansas City, Missouri-based company said it had net income of $1.70. Earnings, adjusted for non-recurring gains, were $1.57 per share.
The results missed Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of nine analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of $1.58 per share.
Train hits pickup stopped on tracks; 1 dead
DUBBERLY, La. (AP) — Louisiana State Police say a 33-year-old man died when his pickup truck stopped on railroad tracks and was hit by a freight train.
Trooper Glenn Younger said in a news release that Jason Fory of Minden was not wearing a seat belt and was thrown from his truck. He died at the scene about 2 a.m. Tuesday in Webster Parish near Dubberly.

The Kansas City, Missouri-based company said it had profit of $1.45 per share. Earnings, adjusted for non-recurring costs, were $1.54 per share.
The results topped Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of eight analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of $1.52 per share.
VICKSBURG, Miss. (AP) — At least one barge has sunk after a string of 30 barges hit a bridge over the Mississippi River at Vicksburg.
U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer Erik Brehaut tells The Vicksburg Post that the tug Jeffrey G was traveling south downriver when barges hit a bridge Thursday afternoon.
VICKSBURG, Miss. (AP) — A group wants a historic Mississippi bridge that had been closed to all vehicular and pedestrian traffic since 1998 to be open year-round to pedestrians and cyclists.
The Vicksburg Post reported Sunday that Friends of the Vicksburg Bridge wants the Old Vicksburg Bridge open permanently and not just for special events.
ASBURY, Mo. (AP) — Authorities say a freight train has struck a car in southwest Missouri, killing the car's driver and injuring a passenger.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol says the crash happened Wednesday 1 mile (1.61 kilometer) south of the Jasper County town of Asbury when 47-year-old Jose Morales-Pereida failed to yield to the Kansas City Southern Train. Morales-Pereida was pronounced dead at a Joplin hospital. The patrol says his passenger was taken to the hospital in serious condition.
Trains hits bus at crossing in Mexico, 7 dead
MEXICO CITY (AP) — A train has hit a bus carrying factory workers in north-central Mexico, and at least seven people have been killed.
The Mexico subsidiary of the Kansas City Southern company says the bus apparently tried to out-run the train at a grade crossing Wednesday in the city of San Luis Potosi.
It said the train was going only half the authorized speed limit for the area.
Freight car derails in Mexico, falls on house, killing 5
MEXICO CITY (AP) — A freight car carrying bulk corn derailed early Thursday in the northern suburbs of Mexico City, killing five people as it rolled over and crushed part of a house near the tracks.
The victims were apparently crushed as they slept before dawn. It was unclear if they were killed by rubble from a wall knocked over by the train car, by the car itself or by the large amount of corn that spilled out of the car.
Holiday train begins tour through several states

Police: 1 dead after train hits car
JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — Authorities in Mississippi say one person has died after a train struck a car.
WJTV-TV reports the collision happened on Thursday afternoon. Jackson police Commander Tyree Jones says the 44-year-old driver of the car died at the scene.
GOODMAN, Mo. (AP) — Authorities say a 5-year-old girl was killed and four others were injured after a freight train struck a minivan in southwest Missouri.
MEXICO CITY (AP) — Mexican regulatory authorities say an investigation has found that an effective rail duopoly between Kansas City Southern and Grupo Mexico has increased transport costs and created a lack of competition in rail freight.
The Commission on Competition said Wednesday that the U.S. and Mexican firms own most of a third rail company, Ferrovalle. Together, the companies and their subsidiaries control 72.3 of the country's rail lines under concessions from the government.
The Kansas City Southern rail line's annual Holiday Express train brought Christmas spirit to Port Arthur on Thursday evening. The train's cars were transformed into Christmas displays with model railroads, lights and other decorations. Santa Claus also made an appearance.
Effective Monday and Tuesday between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m. each day, the Loop 20 southbound main lanes will be reduced to one lane between US 59 (Saunders Ave.) and Carson Rd. just before the Kansas City Southern (KCS) bridge.
Motorists should slow down and prepare to merge to one lane approaching the aforementioned work zone limits.
Improvements on rails in several cities coming soon
PORT ALLEN, La. (AP) — Railway improvement projects and construction will begin later this month in Port Allen, New Roads and several other Louisiana cities thanks to a $14 million investment from a Missouri transportation company.
The Kansas City Southern Railway Company has invested $14.3 million for rail, cross tie and crossing improvements planned between Port Allen and Simmesport along with a rail project planned in Norco.
