Michigan adjusts to decisions by 4 to skip Peach Bowl
ATLANTA (AP) — Michigan probably will need more than one running back to replace Karan Higdon in Saturday's Peach Bowl against Florida.
The leadership void left by Higdon's exit may be even more difficult to fill.
"Karan was our guy, our offensive leader, and we all kind of followed him," quarterback Shea Patterson said Thursday of Higdon, the team's leading rusher and offensive captain.

No. 15 Michigan aims for tuneup versus Maryland before tests
ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — Michigan's offensive line has been much maligned in recent years, getting the brunt of criticism for an offense without a consistent running or passing game.
"The narrative has been going on ever since I've been here that the Michigan offensive line hasn't been up to the standards that people outside this building would like," senior offensive tackle Jon Runyan said. "We take that personally."

No. 14 Michigan rallies to beat Northwestern 20-17
EVANSTON, Ill. (AP) — Facing a large early deficit on the road and struggling on both sides of the ball, Michigan appeared headed for a frustrating loss.
The players, though, said they never doubted they would rally.
Karan Higdon ran for 115 yards and two touchdowns, Shea Patterson threw 196 yards and No. 14 Michigan overcame a 17-point deficit to beat Northwestern 20-17 in Saturday night.

Ann Arbor — Michigan running back Karan Higdon walked into coach Jim Harbaugh's office Thursday morning, asked how he was doing and then ... gave him a hug.
That's sort of the thing around Schembechler Hall these days.
"Coach wants a hug, gotta give coach a hug," Higdon said Thursday night after practice.
South Carolina's offense struggles mightily
South Carolina returned the ensuing kickoff to its own 19. Ty'Son Williams rushed for eight yards to end the first quarter. Hayden Hurst took the opening handoff in the second quarter and lost a yard and then a short pass went for negative yardage as well, forcing another punt.
Most valuable player, offense: Running back Karan Higdon was a unanimous All-Big Ten third-team selection, and the stalwart back ran hard for his 929 regular-season yards and team-leading 11 rushing touchdowns. He averaged 6.3 yards a carry, ranking him fourth in the Big Ten. He emerged as the team's leading rusher from a tailback-by-committee approach before Ty Isaac was injured, although Chris Evans came on late this season. Evans was Big Ten honorable mention. Higdon gained more than 150 yards rushing in three games this season, including two of 200 yards or more.
Michigan senior left tackle Mason Cole and sophomore Ben Bredeson were voted All-Big Ten second-team by the media and coaches and are among seven Wolverines who received all-conference offense honors.
Ann Arbor — Michigan running back Chris Evans had to wake up at 6:30 a.m. on Tuesday and was set to wake the same time on Wednesday to make up for missing his training room check-in on Sundays.
Ann Arbor — Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh did not offer specifics other than to say the news on running back Karan Higdon's injury is "positive."
Higdon, the Wolverines' leading rusher, left the Maryland game last Saturday before halftime with what appeared to be an ankle injury.
"We'll get more today," Harbaugh said Monday at his weekly news conference. "Seems good. Seems like positive news and update."

WHAT'S AT STAKE
The Wolverines still have a shot at winning the East Division and playing in the Big Ten title game. For that to happen, beating the Terrapins is a must. Maryland hasn't been eliminated from bowl eligibility, but needs to win two of its last three.
The likelihood of the Gophers' subpar offense struggling against Michigan's top-tier defense was a safer prediction heading into Saturday night's game at the Big House in Ann Arbor.
Minnesota's top-20 ranked defense being minced like an onion by the Wolverines' 38th-ranked running game was not such a ready-made prognostication, however.
Running game giving a boost to No. 21 Michigan
ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — After all the hand wringing this season over Michigan's quarterback play, the passing game became an afterthought last weekend.
With 371 yards rushing against Minnesota, the Wolverines might have won no matter who was taking the snaps, and although that type of performance may be hard to replicate, it did give No. 21 Michigan a blueprint for how the team might be able to finish strong against a tough November schedule.
Michigan's Chris Evans and Karan Higdon were rewarded Monday for running all over Minnesota.
The running backs were named Big Ten Co-Offensive Players of the Week, as Michigan and Michigan State dominated the weekly honors with four players combined.
Michigan sophomore Khaleke Hudson shared defensive player of the week honors with Iowa junior defensive back Josh Jackson, while Michigan State redshirt sophomore kicker Matt Coghlin was named Big Ten Special Teams Player of the Week.
When Karan Higdon learned he had reached 200 yards rushing for a second time this season, he was nearly overcome by the emotions.
Higdon rushed for 200 and Chris Evans for 191 in Michigan's 33-10 victory over Minnesota on Saturday at Michigan Stadium. Higdon also rushed for 200 yards at Indiana in mid-October, becoming the first Michigan back to gain 200 yards in a game since Mike Hart in 2007.
Michigan runs wild, pulls away and routs Minnesota 33-10
ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — Michigan took the ball out of Brandon Peters' hands, and the plan worked out perfectly.
Karan Higdon ran for 200 yards and two touchdowns and Chris Evans added 191 yards rushing and two more scores, helping the Wolverines pull away to beat Minnesota 33-10 Saturday night.
"We've just really been focusing on the run game," offensive tackle Mason Cole said. "We knew we had the backs to do it."
Ann Arbor — Not surprisingly, Michigan redshirt freshman Brandon Peters made his first start at quarterback, but the story Saturday night was the Wolverines' one-two running back punch of Karan Higdon and Chris Evans.
Peters was not asked to do too much against Minnesota in a game that was delayed an hour because of lightning accompanied by heavy rain. There was an announced crowd of 111,090 at Michigan Stadium.
Ann Arbor — Freshman fullback Ben Mason earned a helmet sticker for scoring a touchdown "with" Karan Higdon last Saturday. Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh, who has gushed about Mason's brute football strength since preseason camp, thought Mason's block on the touchdown was worthy of a sticker.
Harbaugh before the season said on several occasions that Mason "goes forward and hits people better than anybody I've ever seen."
Ann Arbor — Early in the week, when Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh was asked about the possibility of backup quarterback Brandon Peters getting some playing time, he said he didn't have a crystal ball and could not make a prediction.
It became clear in the second quarter a change was needed, and Peters, a redshirt freshman, entered the game and immediately gave Michigan a spark, leading the Wolverines to a 35-14 victory over Rutgers at Michigan Stadium on Saturday.
Ann Arbor — Michigan running-backs coach Jay Harbaugh sees similarities in the way starting tailback Karan Higdon and redshirt freshman Kareem Walker play the position.
Higdon leads the team in rushing with 446 yards and six rushing touchdowns, while Walker has surfaced only briefly this season with two carries for 15 yards. Harbaugh said he anticipates getting Walker more playing time Saturday when the Wolverines (5-2, 2-2 Big Ten) face Rutgers at Michigan Stadium.
Samii Stoloff, a junior at the University of Michigan, usually only photographs home football games. But she had traveled to Penn State over the weekend, so she figured she might as well set up shop.
Little did she know, she'd become the center of attention Saturday night in front of a crowd of 110,823 at Beaver Stadium.
"It was insane," she told The News on Monday afternoon, safe and sound back in Ann Arbor.
Ann Arbor — Michigan running back Karan Higdon understands that most eyes will be on Penn State running back Saquon Barkley when the two teams meet Saturday night.
Higdon gets that, because he hasn't shied from watching Barkley and trying to learn from the all-around back, who is a Heisman Trophy contender leading a team that is unbeaten and now ranked No. 2 nationally.
The 19th-ranked Wolverines are 5-1, 2-1 Big Ten and big underdogs heading into Beaver Stadium for the "white out" night game.
RB Karan Higdon carrying a new load for No. 19 Michigan
ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — Karan Higdon has been delivering the goods for a long time.
The junior running back posted career highs in carries (25), rushing yardage (200) and touchdowns (three) as No. 19 Michigan beat Indiana 27-20 in overtime on Saturday. Higdon became the first Michigan back to rush for 200 yards in a game since Mike Hart in 2007. Second on the team with 410 rushing yards on a team-high 70 carries, Higdon is steadily emerging as Michigan's go-to back.
An emotional Tom Allen clutched both sides of the podium during his post-game press conference, digging at the carpet with the toe of his right shoe.
The Indiana coach was visibly touched by his team's will and resolve, the Hoosiers' ability to answer a fourth-quarter deficit and force overtime against one of the nation's top-ranked defenses.

Michigan’s Harbaugh says Maryland’s Durkin is kindred spirit
ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — Jim Harbaugh rarely, if ever, says someone is like him.
DJ Durkin is an exception.
"Does things at a very high level with a lot of enthusiasm," Harbaugh said when asked about Durkin. "Kindred spirit."
Harbaugh hired Durkin to be his first defensive coordinator last year at Michigan, reuniting with one of the key members from his staff at Stanford.
