WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) — Wake Forest tried and failed three times to hammer its way into the end zone for that one final yard it needed.
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) — Wake Forest will start redshirt sophomore Jamie Newman at quarterback this week against No. 22 North Carolina State.
Newman was listed as the starter on the team's depth chart released Tuesday, two days before gameday. He replaces Sam Hartman, a freshman who started the first nine games before suffering a season-ending leg injury late in last week's 41-24 loss to No. 13 Syracuse.
BOSTON (AP) — Louisville is still looking for an heir to Heisman Trophy winner Lamar Jackson. Boston College and Syracuse had quarterbacks coming back from injuries. Wake Forest was only looking for someone to fill-in while starter Kendall Hinton was suspended and may have found itself a long-term replacement
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) — Kendall Hinton is back for Wake Forest — but as a backup quarterback.
Coach Dave Clawson on Tuesday listed Hinton as the backup to freshman Sam Hartman for the Demon Deacons' game against No. 8 Notre Dame (3-0) this weekend.
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) — Wake Forest has suspended projected starting quarterback Kendall Hinton and tight end Thomas Cole for the first three games of the season.
The team announced the suspension Thursday, saying it was for a violation of team rules. The team didn't publicly specify the nature of the violation.
Hinton is a redshirt junior with four career starts. He emerged from spring practices as the projected starter after the departure of four-year starter John Wolford.
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) — The only thing that stopped either of Wake Forest's top two quarterbacks was the halftime clock.
Presbyterian certainly couldn't do it.
Starter John Wolford accounted for four touchdowns, backup Kendall Hinton added three more and the Demon Deacons opened their season by routing the Blue Hose 51-7 on Thursday night.
Wolford threw for three touchdowns and ran for another, while Hinton had two scoring throws and a short TD run.
John Wolford is ready to make Wake Forest history.
The senior is set to become the program's first quarterback to start four consecutive season openers Thursday night when the Demon Deacons begin against Presbyterian of the FCS.
"It's an interesting situation and I'm happy that I'm playing," Wolford said. "I'm competitive, but ultimately we've got to go out and perform every day. It's a cool stat, but whatever happened three years ago, two years ago, one year ago, doesn't matter."
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) — John Wolford will begin his fourth season as Wake Forest's starting quarterback.
The Demon Deacons released their depth chart Friday, six days before the season opener against Presbyterian.
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) — Kendall Hinton is finally healthy again, back as Wake Forest's starting quarterback — and not as likely to take as many unnecessary chances on the field.
A knee injury kept him out of the final 10 games last season, and now that he's at 100 percent, he says the Demon Deacons' injury-plagued quarterbacks have to do more this year to keep themselves upright.
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) — Wake Forest has dismissed backup quarterback Kyle Kearns from the team for a violation of team rules.
Coach Dave Clawson announced the dismissal Wednesday. The school's news release didn't specify the nature of the violation.
Kearns played in five games as a redshirt freshman in 2016 but would have entered preseason practice behind three-year starter John Wolford and Kendall Hinton on the depth chart.
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) — Matt Colburn rushed for a career-high 118 yards and an injury-depleted Wake Forest beat Delaware 38-21 on Saturday.
Colburn filled in admirably for injured freshman running back Cade Carney, scoring a touchdown just before halftime. The Deacons bookended intermission with scores, opening the third quarter with a 10-play, 75-yard TD drive that extended their lead to 31-14 and ended any thoughts of an upset.
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) — Wake Forest quarterback Kendall Hinton left Saturday night's game against Delaware early with a sprained left knee.
Team officials said Hinton was diagnosed at halftime with the sprain and would not play in the second half.
Hinton was hurt with about four minutes left in the first quarter of his second career start, suffering a noncontact injury on a 1-yard quarterback draw. He had six carries for 38 yards rushing and was 2 of 4 for 24 yards passing when he was hurt.
DURHAM, N.C. (AP) — Freshman Cade Carney rushed for three touchdowns, and Wake Forest upset Duke 24-14 on Saturday.
Carney rushed for 108 yards while becoming the program's first freshman with a three-TD game since Chris Barclay against Purdue in 2002. He scored on runs of 7, 1 and 55 yards — the last of which broke a 14-all tie with about 4 minutes left in the third quarter.
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) — Victories at Wake Forest in recent years have been few and — for the offense, anyway — forgettable.
The Demon Deacons started the season with another one of those on Thursday night.
Kendall Hinton ran for a short early touchdown and Wake Forest overcame some offensive struggles and held on for a season-opening 7-3 victory over Tulane.
