SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — Oregon was stumbling toward the end of a disappointing season until a strong turnaround led the Ducks to the Pac-12 title and an NCAA Tournament bid.
EUGENE, Ore. (AP) — Stanford knew exactly who the masked man was at the center of Oregon's defense.
Yet it still didn't matter, as Kenny Wooten blocked more shots than the Cardinal made for most of the first half.
"We were very clear on who he was and what he did," Stanford coach Jerod Haase said, "but we didn't execute the game plan very well."
EUGENE, Ore. (AP) — For one game at least, all was well in the basketball world for Oregon's Payton Pritchard.
The result was the second career double-double for the last remaining Duck from the Final Four run two years ago.
Pritchard had 20 points and a career-high 10 rebounds to help Oregon outlast California 73-62 on Wednesday night.
Louis King added 12 points and Paul White and Kenny Wooten each had 11 for the Ducks (14-9, 5-5 Pac-12). Freshman Will Richardson had a season-high nine assists.
EUGENE, Ore. (AP) — A timely chalk talk with Bill Walton inspired Oregon's Kenny Wooten to check out the Hall of Famer's moves.
The video session then played a part in Wooten's best offensive game of the season for the struggling Ducks.
Louis King scored 13 of his 22 points in the second half and Wooten matched his career high with 20 to help Oregon rally past Washington State 78-58 on Sunday night.
GAME OF THE WEEK: The slumping Oregon Ducks have fallen to 2-3 in Pac-12 play and eighth in the conference standings, and any shot at making the NCAA Tournament field — apart from a conference tournament win — seems to be rapidly slipping away. But they could boost their season Thursday with a victory at home over Washington, the last undefeated team in Pac-12 play. The Ducks have won six straight over the Huskies.
TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — Arizona State ran away from Oregon with a 19-0 second-half run, and the unquestioned highlight was a monster dunk by Zylan Cheatham over the Ducks' Kenny Wooten.
"He's an elite shot-blocker," Cheatham said, "so I wasn't going to be on the other side of SportsCenter. It was pretty much him or me when I got him in the air and I won this battle."
It was, Arizona State coach Bobby Hurley said, a "statement-type" play in the 78-64 Sun Devils victory.
TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) — Paul White scored 16 points and Victor Bailey Jr. added 13, helping Oregon hold off Arizona 59-54 Thursday night.
The once-fast Ducks have had to slow down in recent games due to a string of injuries, relying on their defense rather than outscoring opponents.
Oregon (11-6, 2-2 Pac-12) got Kenny Wooten back after missing four games with a broken jaw, though he played limited minutes and star freshman Bol Bol was on the bench in a walking boot.
EUGENE, Ore. (AP) — A matinee start seemed to catch the wrong team off its game with no excuses.
Fortunately for Oregon, there was enough that went right between falling behind by eight points early and giving up 13 straight at the end for the Ducks to claim a season-high fourth consecutive win.
Victor Bailey Jr. scored 16 points in his first start and Oregon finished a sweep of its four-game homestand by outlasting Florida A&M 71-64 on Tuesday.
EUGENE, Ore. (AP) — Oregon wasn't about to let another huge underdog walk off its floor celebrating a stunning upset.
Kenny Wooten jammed that sentiment home for the Ducks, and it also didn't hurt to have another five-star recruit waiting in the wings.
Wooten scored a career-high 20 points and Bol Bol had 18 points and 10 rebounds to lead Oregon past Omaha 84-61 on Saturday night.
Wooten was 9-for-12 shooting from the field with six dunks.
EUGENE, Ore. (AP) — Playing alongside highly touted freshman Bol Bol comes with benefits for Oregon's other post players.
"It's been pretty natural trying to adjust, because I can't get all the rebounds," Kenny Wooten said.
Bol had 23 points and 12 rebounds as No 14 Oregon rode its stifling defense to an 81-47 victory over Eastern Washington on Friday night.
Last season: 23-13, eliminated in the second round of the NIT.
Coach: Dana Altman.
Who's gone: G Elijah Brown, F MiKyle McIntosh and F Troy Brown Jr.
EUGENE, Ore. (AP) — Freshman Victor Bailey Jr. hit 7 of 8 3-pointers and scored 23 points, both career bests, and Oregon rallied in the fourth quarter to defeat Rider 99-86 in a first-round NIT game on Tuesday night.
LAS VEGAS (AP) — Trying to beat Oregon at the rim with the game on the line is becoming a bad idea in this Pac-12 tournament.
The long arms of Kenny Wooten are making sure of it.
Elijah Brown led Oregon's second-half comeback and Wooten finished it off with his second straight game-ending blocked shot, lifting the Ducks to a 68-66 win over Utah in the Pac-12 tournament semifinals on Thursday night.
LAS VEGAS (AP) — Oregon looked nothing like a team fighting for a longshot NCAA Tournament spot. The Ducks struggled with Washington State's physical defense, clanged one shot after another, had a whopping 17 points by halftime.
A little second-half surge got them going. A lot of grit and two big Kenny Wooten blocks got them into the Pac-12 tournament quarterfinals.
EUGENE, Ore. (AP) — Dana Altman is still waiting for his real Oregon team to stand up.
A 60-point swing in outcomes over the past two games left the Ducks' coach at a loss as to their identity.
Troy Brown Jr. scored 21 points and Kenny Wooten had 12 points and seven blocks to lead Oregon past Washington 65-40 on Thursday night.
Five days earlier, the Ducks were blown out by 35 points at Stanford, the worst loss in Altman's eight seasons at Oregon.
EUGENE, Ore. (AP) — Bouncing back for a home split on the opening weekend of Pac-12 play gave Oregon coach Dana Altman cause for optimism.
But his young Ducks, still smarting from a 10-point loss to Utah, have a long way to go as they hit the conference road for the next two weeks.
Troy Brown had a season-high 21 points and seven rebounds, and Elijah Brown added 17 points to help lead Oregon to a 77-62 victory over Colorado on Sunday night.
FRESNO, Calif. (AP) — Dana Altman knew that the key for Oregon to get its struggling offense going was to pick up the tempo on the other end of the court.
It took a little bit but the Ducks eventually got the message and turned a close game into a route in a hurry after halftime.
Kenny Wooten scored eight of his 13 points as part of a big run in the second half and Oregon pulled away to beat Fresno State 68-61 on Saturday night, ending the Bulldogs' seven-game winning streak.
EUGENE, Ore. (AP) — Elijah Brown heard about the one that got away and kept his Oregon teammate from his first triple-double.
Finding out that his missed layup kept Troy Brown from the first such feat by a Duck in 15 years didn't help.
"Man, makes me feel even better, thank you," Elijah Brown said. "He'll have more opportunities, though, so be on the watch because I'm not missing that again."
EUGENE, Ore. (AP) — It was the kind of ugly win Payton Pritchard would just as soon forget, except for the performance by the freshman seated next to him.
Pritchard scored 16 points, and Troy Brown had 10 points and 12 rebounds as Oregon struggled to down winless Texas Southern 74-68 on Monday night.
The difference-maker was Kenny Wooten with 13 points and four blocks for the Ducks (7-3), who started the second half on a 16-2 run to open a 48-33 lead but still couldn't shake the Tigers (0-9).
EUGENE, Ore. (AP) — Losing three of its last four games and trudging through finals week left Oregon in a foul frame of mind.
So the Ducks took it out on Colorado State with the kind of performance coach Dana Altman has been looking for through the first month of the season.
Elijah Brown scored 18 of his season-high 20 points in the second half to lead six Oregon players in double figures in a 95-65 romp over Colorado State on Friday night.
EUGENE, Ore. (AP) — A nice round milestone landed Dana Altman squarely among the coaching elite and in a reflective frame of mind.
Kenny Wooten had 19 points and 13 rebounds, and Victor Bailey scored 18 points to lead Oregon to a 114-56 victory over Alabama State on Friday night.
The two freshmen led six Ducks (3-0) in double figures as Altman became the 10th active men's coach to win his 600th game. In his eighth season at Oregon, Altman is 600-313 in 29 years as a Division I coach.
Last season: 33-6, most wins in school history.
Coach: Dana Altman.
Who's gone: F Jordan Bell, G Tyler Dorsey, F Dillon Brooks, F Chris Boucher, G Dylan Ennis.
Who's back: G Payton Pritchard, the lone starter from the Ducks team that went to the Final Four last season. He averaged 7.4 points, 3.4 rebounds and 3.6 assists per game last season. Sophomore Keith Smith and senior Roman Sorkin played limited roles on last season's team.
