The top-seeded American needed six match points to finish off Tomic for his first victory since last year's Paris Masters. He followed that tournament by dropping all three matches in his first appearance at the season-ending ATP Finals and was 0-2 to start 2019, including a first-round loss at the Australian Open.
Opelka ousts 2018 semifinalist Mannarino at New York Open

NEWARK, Del. (AP) — Ryan Johnson scored 10 points and his last-second steal cemented Delaware's 70-66 defeat of UNC Wilmington Saturday night.
UNC Wilmington trailed by as many as 20 in the second half but scored 11 unanswered points to kick off a 16-2 run, slicing the lead to 69-66 when Devontae Cacok dunked on a putback with four seconds left. Cacok snared the rebound of a Delaware missed free throw with three seconds on the clock but Johnson picked off a Kai Toews pass as time ran out.

Delaware holds off late Drexel rally in 76-75 win
NEWARK, Del. (AP) — Kevin Anderson hit two free throws in the final seconds to preserve a slim Delaware advantage in a 76-75 win over Drexel on Saturday afternoon.
The Blue Hens (14-8, 6-3 Colonial Athletic Association) had a wide lead through most of the second half but Drexel rallied late, closing to 74-72 with 12 seconds to play. Anderson's free throws pushed it to 76-72 just before Drexel's Trevor John hit a 3-pointer for the final margin.

Anderson walks tall at Maharashtra Open
PUNE, India (AP) — Top-seeded Kevin Anderson won his sixth ATP title when he recovered from 5-2 down in the decisive tiebreaker to beat Ivo Karlovic 7-6 (4), 6-7 (2), 7-6 (5) in the Maharashtra Open final on Saturday.
It was Anderson's fourth victory in five meetings against Karlovic.
Anderson, of South Africa, lost last year's final against Gilles Simon but defeated the Frenchman in straight sets on Friday in the semifinals.
39-year-old Karlovic reaches Maharashtra Open final
PUNE, India (AP) — Ivo Karlovic became the oldest player in 42 years to qualify for a tour-level final by beating Steve Darcis 7-6 (3), 4-6, 6-3 at the Maharashtra Open on Friday.
The 39-year-old Karlovic will face top-seeded Kevin Anderson, who beat defending champion Gilles Simon 6-3, 7-6 (3) in the other semifinal.
He is the oldest player to reach a title match since 43-year-old Ken Rosewall at Hong Kong in 1977.
Anderson advances to Maharashtra Open semifinals
PUNE, India (AP) — Kevin Anderson advanced to the semifinals of the Maharashtra Open by beating Jaume Munar 6-3, 6-3 on Thursday.
The top-seeded South African broke Munar four times to set up a meeting with Frenchman Gilles Simon, who beat him in the 2018 final.
"I thought I did a really good job creating opportunities and taking them, so definitely felt good out there," Anderson said.

PUNE, India (AP) — Kevin Anderson reached the quarterfinals of Maharashtra Open by beating Laslo Djere 7-6 (3), 7-6 (6) on Wednesday.
The top-seeded South African, who lost to Gilles Simon in last year's final, hit 20 aces and saved a set point in the second set.

Roddick returns for exhibition match to start New York Open
NEW YORK (AP) — Andy Roddick is trying to get his shoulder ready, hoping he can still bring the high heat on serve.
The former U.S. Open champion will be back in town and wants to have his game with him.
"Coming back to New York is certainly not a place where I want to not play well," Roddick said.
He will play fellow tennis Hall of Famer Jim Courier on Feb. 9 in an exhibition match to kick off the New York Open, event organizers announced Wednesday.
Eric erupts for 33 as Delaware holds off St. Francis (PA)
NEWARK, Del. (AP) — Eric Carter scored a career-high 33 points with 12 rebounds and Delaware held off St. Francis (Pa) 88-83 on Sunday.
Carter finished shooting 12 of 14 and made 8 of 10 foul shots. He hit a pair of free throws with 2:06 remaining for an 83-78 lead.
Keith Braxton buried a 3-pointer with 87 seconds left before Ithiel Horton's jump shot with 54 seconds to go put Delaware up 85-81. Braxton followed with two more free throws but the Red Flash wouldn't score again.
Carter scores 23, Delaware beats Louisiana Tech 75-71
NEWARK, Del. (AP) — Eric Carter had 23 points, eight rebounds and four assists, helping Delaware beat Louisiana Tech 75-71 on Monday night.
Ithiel Horton made three 3-pointers and scored 18 points for Delaware (5-2). Darian Bryant added 12 points and Kevin Anderson 11.
Zverev to face Federer in semifinals of ATP Finals
LONDON (AP) — After reaching the last four at the ATP Finals for the first time, Alexander Zverev isn't satisfied.
He set up a semifinal with six-time champion Roger Federer by defeating John Isner 7-6 (5), 6-3 on Friday.
Zverev is the youngest player at 21 to reach the semifinals since 2009 and the first from Germany since 2003.
"The tournament isn't over," Zverev said. "I don't want to really be thinking 'I'm in the semifinals now, I'm satisfied.' That's not how I work."
Federer advances to record-extending 15th ATP Finals semi
LONDON (AP) — Roger Federer is peaking at the right time — again.
The six-time champion advanced to the last four of the ATP Finals for a record-extending 15th time with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Kevin Anderson on Thursday.
Federer, chasing the 100th title of his career, needed only a set to advance and produced his best performance at the season-ending tournament to end the round-robin stages with a 2-1 win-loss record.

Eric Carter scored 15, Kevin Anderson and Jacob Cushing each scored 13 and Ithiel Horton scored 10 against the Division II-member Griffins. Delaware (1-1) never trailed, but Chestnut put up a fight for the first nine minutes.
Federer beats Thiem to get back on track at ATP Finals
LONDON (AP) — Sometimes no practice makes perfect — for Roger Federer anyway.
After cancelling his training session a day earlier, Federer produced a much-improved performance to get his campaign for a seventh ATP Finals title back on track with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Dominic Thiem on Tuesday.
Kevin Anderson vs Kei Nishikori in Vienna final
VIENNA (AP) — Kei Nishikori will try to end his long losing streak in ATP finals and Kevin Anderson will go for his second title of the year at the Erste Bank Open on Sunday.
The fifth-seeded Nishikori reached his third final of 2018 after beating Mikhail Kukushkin of Kazakhstan 6-4, 6-3 in the semifinals.
A winner of 11 ATP events, Nishikori hasn't triumphed since winning in Memphis in February 2016. He has lost eight straight finals since.
Anderson advances at Japan Open with win over Edben
TOKYO (AP) — Second-seeded Kevin Anderson advanced to the second round of the Japan Open by beating Matthew Ebden 4-6, 7-6 (1), 6-2 on Wednesday.
Anderson hit 22 aces and saved five of six break points. He will next face Frances Tiafore.
Also, third-seeded Kei Nishikori advanced to the quarterfinals with a 6-3, 7-5 victory over Benoit Paire. Nishikori will face either Stefanos Tsitsipas or Alex de Minaur in the next round.
Federer, Zverev lead Team Europe to Laver Cup victory
CHICAGO (AP) — Alexander Zverev beat Kevin Anderson on Sunday night to give Team Europe a victory in the second Laver Cup.
Zverev won the final five points to defeat Anderson 6-7, 7-5, (10-7). His victory helped Team Europe beat Team World 13-8.
"Obviously it was an amazing feeling," Zverev said. "So special to clinch it for us guys and Europe. It's great how it ended."
Anderson, who lost in the Wimbledon finals this year, said Sunday night's setback affected more than just him.
Federer-Djokovic lose doubles match at Laver Cup
CHICAGO (AP) — Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic looked quite comfortable while playing together for the first time Friday night.
Except for one particular point.
Djokovic drilled Federer in the lower back with a forehand in the third game of their doubles match against Kevin Anderson and Jack Sock in the Laver Cup. Djokovic covered his mouth with his left hand and leaned over after the ball went off his partner.
"I apologized right away," Djokovic said. "It didn't look that great."
