MADRID (AP) — Valencia is getting used to some late heroics in the Copa del Rey.
After scoring twice in stoppage time to advance from the quarterfinals last week, Valencia salvaged a 2-2 draw in the first leg of the semifinals against Real Betis thanks to an injury-time equalizer.
Blackman gives 2nd-tier Sporting win over Valencia in Copa
MADRID (AP) — Substitute forward Nick Blackman scored the winning goal with his first touch of the ball Tuesday to give second-division club Sporting Gijon a 2-1 win over Valencia in the first leg of their round-of-16 match in the Copa del Rey.
Blackman found the net in the 79th minute with a diving header just moments after entering the match.
Valencia to sign Russia forward Denis Cheryshev on loan
MADRID (AP) — Valencia says it has reached an agreement with Villarreal to get Russia forward Denis Cheryshev on loan.
The club says the loan is "pending" and will be valid until the end of the season.
Cheryshev scored four goals at the World Cup, helping Russia reach the quarterfinals.
LYON, France (AP) — Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone knows his team must find a way to stop Marseille playmaker Dimitri Payet in Wednesday's Europa League final.
Payet is the French league's best passer and helped lead Marseille to its first European final for 14 years, with three goals and seven assists in the competition. So while Simeone highlighted multiple attacking threats in this Marseille team, he clearly views Payet as the most dangerous.
MADRID (AP) — Atletico Madrid took advantage of Barcelona's stumble to keep alive its title hopes in the Spanish league.
Kevin Gameiro converted a first-half penalty kick as Atletico defeated Deportivo La Coruna 1-0 on Sunday to move within nine points of leader Barcelona with eight matches remaining.
Barcelona lost points in a 2-2 draw at Sevilla on Saturday when it needed two very late goals by Luis Suarez and Lionel Messi to remain the league's only unbeaten team this season.
Atletico and Valencia cruise into Copa del Rey quarterfinals
MADRID (AP) — Victor "Vitolo" Machin and Luciano Vietto scored on their starting debuts as Atletico Madrid and Valencia cruised into the Copa del Rey quarterfinals on Tuesday.
Vietto scored three times — including one from near midfield — to help Valencia rout Las Palmas 4-0 and advance 5-1 on aggregate. Vitolo scored his first goal for Atletico as it defeated third-division team Lleida 3-0 and advanced 7-0 on aggregate.
Atletico beats Roma 2-0 to stay alive in Champions League
MADRID (AP) — Antoine Griezmann ended his scoreless streak in style on Wednesday, finding the net with a stunning overhead kick to keep alive Atletico Madrid's hopes of advancing in the Champions League.
Griezmann, who hadn't scored in eight matches with Atletico, struck his volley perfectly from inside the area after a cross by Angel Correa midway through the second half to lead Atletico to a 2-0 win over Roma, avoiding the team's early elimination.
BARCELONA, Spain (AP) — Most of Atletico Madrid's hopes of beating crosstown rival Real Madrid will ride on the shoulders of Antoine Griezmann.

LEVERKUSEN, Germany (AP) — French forwards Antoine Griezmann and Kevin Gameiro tore Bayer Leverkusen's defense apart to put the Champions League quarterfinals within reach for Atletico Madrid with a 4-2 away victory on Tuesday.
Gameiro created one goal for Griezmann and scored another, with Saul Niguez setting the Spanish side on its way, before substitute Fernando Torres completed the scoring in the Round of 16 match.
Gameiro nets 3 in 6 minutes, Bale scores in return in Liga
BARCELONA, Spain (AP) — With three goals in six minutes, Kevin Gameiro made a strong case to be Atletico Madrid's first-choice striker after leading its 4-1 win at Sporting Gijon on Saturday.
The Spanish league said only Bebeto in the 1995-96 season and David Villa in 2005-06 have scored faster hat tricks.
While Gameiro made some history for his club, Gareth Bale made a scoring return for Real Madrid after nearly three months recovering from ankle surgery.

Ronaldo, who missed Portugal's opening loss to Switzerland because of a knee injury in the final of Euro 2016, returned to action on Friday by scoring two of his four goals less than five minutes into the 6-0 rout of nine-man Andorra in Group B.
