Wolves beat Blazers for 3rd straight win since Butler trade
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Kevin Garnett showed up courtside, and that wasn't the only surprise in Minnesota on Friday night.
In their first week without erstwhile defensive stalwart Jimmy Butler, the new-look Timberwolves locked down one of the Western Conference's top teams.
Andrew Wiggins scored 23 points, Derrick Rose had 17 and the Wolves won their third straight game since trading Butler by beating the Portland Trail Blazers 112-96 on Friday night.
Garnett sues accountant over $77M lost to wealth manager
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Kevin Garnett is suing an accountant and his firm, alleging they helped a wealth manager steal $77 million from the retired Minnesota Timberwolves and Boston Celtics star.
The federal malpractice lawsuit alleges Kentucky-based accountant Michael Wertheim and Welenken CPAs enabled Charles Banks IV of Atlanta to defraud Garnett through businesses in which Garnett and Banks shared an interest.
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Minnesota Timberwolves have two All-NBA players in the same season for the first time in 14 years.
Jimmy Butler and Karl-Anthony Towns were both named to the All-NBA third team. The league's all-star teams were announced Thursday.
The last Timberwolves pair on the list was Kevin Garnett (first team) and Sam Cassell (second team) in 2004. That was also the last time the team made the playoffs before returning last month to end the NBA's longest active absence.
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Minnesota Timberwolf Jimmy Butler has been named to the 2017-18 NBA All-Defensive Second Team.
The NBA announced the selections Wednesday. It's the fourth such honor in Butler's career. The guard/forward earned second team honors in 2014, 2015 and 2016 with the Chicago Bulls.
Butler finished his first season with Minnesota, his seventh in the NBA, with a career-high 1.97 steals per game, fourth best in the league.
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — For the first time since 2004, the Minnesota Timberwolves are entering May without their customary collection of good-luck charms for the NBA draft lottery.
The longest-running absence from the playoffs in the league finally over, the Wolves took a significant accomplishment into the summer after their 47-35 record during the regular season tied for the fifth-best in franchise history.
The best game the Timberwolves played in Target Center came on May 19, 2004, an 83-80 victory over Sacramento in Game 7 of the Western Conference semifinals.
As the score indicates, it wasn’t the best because of shotmaking or slick play. It was the best because of the remarkable effort put forth by the noble veterans on both teams — a fierce 48 minutes that had the crowd of 19,944 in a full-throated frenzy throughout that Wednesday.
The four veterans brought in by Timberwolves coach/boss Tom Thibodeau before the start of the 2017-18 season have proved to be sizable assets.
Jimmy Butler is a hard-nosed star and a character likely to say anything, in the manner of Kevin Garnett. Taj Gibson is also hard-nosed and a better player than I imagined.
Jamal Crawford still has it as a shooter and has lived up to his reputation as one of NBAs great guys. Jeff Teague has a quiet manner and has put together a good season.
NEW YORK On the verge of losing a game to yet another Eastern Conference team they absolutely, positively could not afford, the Timberwolves righted themselves through sheer will to beat the New York Knicks 108-104 Friday night.
By doing so, they finally outlasted a depleted team that without Kristaps Porzingis and three other players now has lost 19 of its last 22 games on its way to yet another draft lottery.
Karl-Anthony Towns had a monster game Tuesday against the Clippers, with 30 points, 19 rebounds, three assists and a blocked shot.
He was then asked how he felt about being poised to be on the first team in Timberwolves history to have a winning season without a guy named Kevin Garnett on the roster.
Towns immediately posted his second block of the night.
Jimmy Butler, fresh from contributing almost as much to the All-Star Game as Fergie, on Friday night begins one of the most important regular-season stretches in Timberwolves history as one of the most important players in recent Minnesota history.
There are few parallels locally for a star athlete immediately elevating a franchise upon arrival.
A Timberwolf during training camp a season ago, longtime NBA player Rasual Butler nonetheless impressed Karl-Anthony Towns and Andrew Wiggins during their brief time together.
Wolves coach Tom Thibodeau brought a player he once briefly coached to camp in October 2016. He waived him in that preseasons final cuts, but not before Butler played a mentors role as Kevin Garnett had the season before.
Wolves’ success could mean both Jimmy Butler and Karl-Anthony Towns will be All-Stars
The Timberwolves 29-18 record and fourth-place standing in the Western Conference indicate the winds finally have changed.
By just how much, you will know Tuesday evening.
Thats when the NBA All-Star Games reserves will be announced on TNT before its Tuesday doubleheader.
Thats when you will know just how much difference winning really does make, should the Wolves get both Jimmy Butler and Karl-Anthony Towns into next months game in Los Angeles.
The last time the Timberwolves reached Thanksgiving without owning a three-game losing streak was 12 years ago, when Kevin Garnett played and Dwane Casey coached them.
Losers at home Sunday to Detroit and Monday at Charlotte, the Wolves reach their final game before Thanksgiving and have the chance Wednesday against Orlando to prove good teams dont lose three games consecutively.
There might not be a perfect word to describe the first 17 games of this important Timberwolves season, but judging by the reactions of players, coaches and fans, this one keeps springing to mind: unsatisfying.
Timberwolves young star Karl-Anthony Towns will be just a little less young come Wednesday, when he celebrates his 22nd birthday with a home game against San Antonio and perhaps a greeting sung to him by rookie teammate Justin Patton.
Before he does, Towns in Mondays 109-88 victory at Utah became only the second player in NBA history to reach 3,000 career points and 2,000 rebounds before he turned 22. He did so by grabbing his second rebound of the night, just 85 seconds into the game.
Once again the ball was moving, the Wolves as generous as the upcoming season. As has become recent custom, the shots were falling, including 10 from downtown.
In downtown Minneapolis, all is well.
The Timberwolves finished off a rare home-and-home back-to-back with a 112-94 victory over Charlotte in front of an announced crowd of 14,124 on Sunday at Target Center.
Timberwolves legend Kevin Garnett has an Area 21 feature as part of TNTs NBA coverage, and on Thursday he had on a panel of WNBA greats including Lynx guard Lindsay Whalen. Not long after she got back from a much-needed vacation in Hawaii and not long before she flew to Atlanta for her TV appearance, Whalen chatted with the Star Tribunes Michael Rand.

Jimmy Butler’s arrival makes this the best roster in Timberwolves history
New players often are described as pieces of a puzzle. That isnt quite right. Puzzles are two-dimensional and static. In sports, adding a key player is more like trying to inject a sprinting racehorse with adrenaline while rounding the backstretch, a delicate, maybe even dangerous procedure.
The Golden State Warriors are heading to San Antonio with a two-games-to-none lead in the NBA's Western Conference finals following a 136-100 dismantling of the Spurs. Stephen Curry sat out the final period after providing 29 points, seven assists and seven rebounds. Kevin Durant finished with 16 points and rookie Patrick McCaw had 18 points and five assists off the bench.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Isaiah Thomas is getting some praise, assistance and even a new nickname from some of basketball's biggest stars.
The Boston Celtics guard said he's been talking and texting with Kobe Bryant to get tips about his game. Thomas has gotten text messages from Allen Iverson, Kevin Garnett, Patriots quarterback Tom Brady and boxer Floyd Mayweather, but Bryant has been instrumental in helping the 5-foot-9 All-Star in recent weeks.
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The playoffs have started, and after a season out of the NBA for the first time in more than two decades, Kevin Garnett's body is starting to talk to him.
The mileage on his legs and knees may have limited his playing time over his final couple of seasons in the NBA, but now that he has had a year away from the competition and the camaraderie, he is "definitely getting itchy."

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Kevin Garnett has joined the Los Angeles Clippers as a consultant to help with the team's big men four months after ending his 21-year NBA career.
The move reunites Garnett with Doc Rivers, his former coach in Boston where they won the 2008 NBA championship together, as well as former Celtics teammates Paul Pierce and Brandon Bass.
Kevin Garnett joining TNT as a weekly contributor
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — It didn't take long for Kevin Garnett to find work after retirement.
The 15-time All-Star has a multiyear agreement with Turner Sports to join the network's wildly popular NBA coverage team. Turner says Garnett will serve as a contributor to the coverage, appearing weekly throughout the season from a stand-alone set to provide insight and commentary on the league.
Our NBA picks: Warriors over Clippers, Cavs over Celtics
MIAMI (AP) — Happy new NBA season.
It starts Tuesday night in Cleveland, where the champion Cavaliers will raise a banner and the visiting New York Knicks will see if Derrick Rose can help them start rising back to the upper echelon of the league.
It’s still the Warriors as the team to catch out West
For Golden State, 73 is irrelevant. Only one number matters, and it's 16.
The Warriors' chase of being the greatest team in NBA history last season fell short in a big way, when the team that posted the best regular-season record of all time blew a 3-1 lead in the finals and lost the title to Cleveland.
Timberwolves say goodbye to KG and strike out on their own
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The most poignant moment in Kevin Garnett's retirement video comes when he looks toward the Target Center rafters, uttering "Man," almost in disbelief that a 21-year career was finally coming to an end.
"We going to be all right, man," he says. "I don't expect this to be easy. But so far so good."
Kevin Garnett says ‘farewell’ after 21 seasons in the NBA
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — No fire burned hotter, no mouth was fouler, no opponent was in for a longer night than Kevin Garnett's.
In more than two decades in the NBA, Garnett opened the door for a new wave of young talent to enter the league, was partly responsible for a rewriting of the collective bargaining agreement and nearly singlehandedly redefined what the game's tallest players were allowed to do on the court.
Wolves preparing for life without Kevin Garnett
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Less than a week before the Minnesota Timberwolves open training camp, they still have not heard if franchise icon Kevin Garnett wants to follow Tim Duncan and Kobe Bryant into retirement.
No matter what Garnett chooses to do, it is becoming clear that the franchise that drafted him in 1995, the one that he hoped to take over one day, is preparing for life without him.

Spurs make it official, sign forward Pau Gasol
SAN ANTONIO (AP) — The San Antonio Spurs signed Pau Gasol, beefing up a front line that will be without Tim Duncan next season for the first time in 19 years. They brought back guard Manu Ginobili, too.
The 7-foot Gasol has won two NBA titles and is a six-time All-Star. Gasol is one of six players in NBA history to reach 19,000 points, 10,000 rebounds, 3,000 assists and 1,500 blocks, joining Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Hakeem Olajuwon, Shaquille O'Neal, Kevin Garnett and...
