Judge dismisses ex-UConn coach Ollie’s complaint over firing
HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — Former University of Connecticut men's basketball coach Kevin Ollie has lost a bid to stop the school from unilaterally ending arbitration proceedings related to his firing if he files a racial discrimination complaint against UConn.
Federal Judge Kari Dooley in Bridgeport on Monday approved a motion by UConn to reject Ollie's request, deciding it was filed prematurely. Dooley did not rule on the merits of the request.
Ex-UConn coach Ollie takes dispute to state, federal court
HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — Former UConn basketball coach Kevin Ollie has brought his $10 million dispute with the school over his firing to both state and federal court.
A federal judge in Bridgeport on Friday heard arguments by lawyers for Ollie and the university over a motion that would allow Ollie to move forward with a racial discrimination complaint against the school without jeopardizing his right to an arbitration hearing with UConn over his firing last year.

UConn self-imposes penalties for violations under Ollie
STORRS, Conn. (AP) — The University of Connecticut announced Friday that it is self-imposing penalties, including the loss of a scholarship for the 2019-20 season, for violations of NCAA rules by its basketball program under former coach Kevin Ollie.
UConn fired Ollie after a 14-18 season a year ago, and later detailed numerous NCAA violations it said were committed during his tenure.
UConn asks court to dismiss complaint by ex-coach Ollie
HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — The University of Connecticut asked a judge Friday to dismiss a complaint filed by former basketball coach Kevin Ollie, who contends his firing was in part racially motivated.
The school argues that the federal court doesn't have jurisdiction and Ollie doesn't make a specific claim under federal law in his complaint, which was filed this month.
Ex-UConn coach Ollie says firing was racially motivated
HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — Former UConn men's basketball coach Kevin Ollie is alleging that his firing was racially motivated.
Ollie says in court documents filed Tuesday in federal court that he was treated differently from former coach Jim Calhoun, who wasn't fired despite incurring recruiting violations. Ollie says that the university has illegally tried to deter him from filing a racial discrimination complaint.
Hurley brings renewed sense of optimism to UConn
STORRS, Conn. (AP) — New coach Dan Hurley has brought a renewed sense of energy and optimism with him to UConn, but it's not clear how that will translate this season on the court.
He replaces Kevin Ollie, fired after a 14-18 season, and takes over a program awaiting sanctions for NCAA violations.
Hurley can't control that but he is hoping to help the Huskies' work ethic.
UConn unofficially opens basketball season with First Night
STORRS, Conn. (AP) — New coach Dan Hurley introduced himself to UConn's fans on Friday as the Huskies unofficially opened their basketball season with the annual "First Night" celebration inside Gampel Pavilion.
UConn's version of "Midnight Madness" is now held at 7 p.m. and no longer marks the start of practice (for the men that started two weeks ago).
But it was a chance for the school's fan base to get a first look at the 2018-19 men's and women's players and Hurley.

UConn greats expect program to climb back to elite status
UNCASVILLE, Conn. (AP) — Don't tell Jim Calhoun or his former players that UConn is no longer an elite basketball program.
Yes, the Huskies have missed the NCAA Tournament three times in four years and are 30-35 the past two seasons while playing outside a power conference. UConn is under investigation by the NCAA, and has accused former coach Kevin Ollie of recruiting violations, prompting his firing in March and sparking at $10 million contract dispute.
HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — UConn President Susan Herbst told Kevin Ollie she was upholding his firing because the former men's basketball coach had a pattern of breaking NCAA rules and committed serious violations, according to a letter obtained by The Associated Press.
The school released the June 19 letter from Herbst to Ollie on Monday in response to open records requests from the AP and other news organizations.
STORRS, Conn. (AP) — The University of Connecticut fired men's basketball coach Kevin Ollie after finding NCAA violations that included improper training sessions and improper contact with recruits by Ollie and former UConn star Ray Allen, according to documents released by the school.
Kevin Ollie has accused UConn of violating his constitutional rights.
The headlines were powerful. The words were powerful. Seeing that those words and headlines were generated by ESPN on Wednesday, they were especially formidable.
Ollie didn’t win nearly enough games on the basketball court the past two seasons, but he is winning on one front right now.
He is winning the public relations war nationally.
Ollie’s constitutional rights violated? Eyeballs pop. Emotions rise.

Former UConn basketball Kevin Ollie has accused his old employer of violating his constitutional rights, according to a letter obtained by Hearst Connecticut Media through a Freedom of Information Act request.
In the April 3 letter to UConn president Susan Herbst, Ollie’s legal team contends the school violated Ollie’s 14th Amendment rights by “subverting Coach Ollie’s opportunity to respond to charges and evidence in a meaningful way in advance of the decision to terminate his employment,”
Tom Moore returns to UConn as assistant to Dan Hurley
STORRS, Conn. (AP) — Former Quinnipiac coach Tom Moore is returning as an assistant coach at UConn, where he spent 13 years on Hall of Fame coach Jim Calhoun's staff.
Moore was an assistant last year under Dan Hurley at Rhode Island and becomes the first coach to join Hurley's staff at UConn. Hurley was hired by UConn last week to replace Kevin Ollie after the school's second straight losing season and amid an NCAA investigation.
STORRS, Conn. (AP) — Dan Hurley says he has landed at his dream coaching destination.
Hurley was introduced Friday as the University of Connecticut's 19th men's basketball coach, replacing Kevin Ollie, who was fired earlier this month amid an NCAA investigation and after a second consecutive losing season.
Dan Hurley will be officially introduced as UConn's next men's basketball coach at a press conference Friday afternoon.
UConn announced the hiring of Hurley, its top choice to replace fired head coach Kevin Ollie, Thursday morning.
Hurley, who rebuilt the Rhode Island program into an Atlantic 10 Conference power in his six years there, agreed to a six-year deal worth 3 million per year to fill its vacancy. Rhode Island extended a raise and perks to Hurley in an attempt to keep him.
STORRS, Conn. (AP) — Dan Hurley became a hot commodity after coaching Rhode Island to two straight NCAA Tournaments. On Thursday, he left for a bigger name in New England basketball.
Hurley jumped across state lines to join a UConn team that has won four NCAA titles in 20 years but is under NCAA investigation and just finished a second straight losing season. The Huskies fired coach Kevin Ollie this month.
For the first time in 32 years, UConn has hired a head coach from outside of “the family.”
Dan Hurley has been hired as the 19th head coach in UConn history, sources confirmed on Thursday morning. Hurley, 46, has been the coach at Rhode Island since 2012, leading the Rams to consecutive NCAA tournament appearances the past two seasons for the first time in nearly two decades.
Who will be the next men’s basketball coach at UConn?
A simple question on the minds of Husky fans everywhere since a week ago when Kevin Ollie was fired by the university for “just cause.”
Will it be Dan Hurley, the head coach at Rhode Island considered by most to be at the top of UConn athletic director Dave Benedict’s wish list?
First-time NCAA Tournament head coaches leading 15 teams
Fifteen teams are being led by first-time NCAA Tournament head coaches. All but one is a double-digit seed, so let's just say a run to the championship is improbable.
Just don't say impossible.
Kevin Ollie's seventh-seeded UConn team won the 2014 title in his first tournament as a head coach. The previous coach to win it all as a newbie was Steve Fisher, who was promoted at Michigan in 1989 after Bill Frieder was famously fired after he agreed to take another job following the season.
STORRS, Conn. (AP) — University of Connecticut women's basketball coach Geno Auriemma says he has no doubt he could coach the school's men's basketball team and enjoy it.
But the 63-year-old Auriemma says at his age, he has no interest in starting over as a men's coach.
UConn fired Kevin Ollie on Saturday after a second consecutive losing season. Auriemma's name has been among those mentioned as a possible successor. His teams have won 11 NCAA titles.
No one should be surprised that unions are opposing unions in the casino debate, after a weekend when we saw a union fighting for fired UConn basketball coach Kevin Ollie to get his $10.6 million in salary.
The cleanest, most generous solution would have been for UConn to fire Kevin Ollie, pay him the eight-figure money it owes him and hire Dan Hurley away from Rhode Island.
There is no clean solution. There is no generous solution.
Instead there is a cash-strapped state university Saturday initiating disciplinary procedures against one of its own to terminate employment for just cause, a move that could leave Ollie with none of at least $10.6 million owed to him.
The combination was too much for UConn: an NCAA investigation and a second straight losing season.
All of which left coach Kevin Ollie out of a job. He was fired Saturday four years after leading the Huskies to the NCAA basketball title.
Coaches on hot seat heading into conference tourneys
Mark Fox might need an improbable run through the Southeastern Conference tournament to save his coaching job.
He's hardly alone on the college basketball hot seat.
From Georgia's Fox to Pittsburgh's Kevin Stallings to UConn's Kevin Ollie, numerous coaches went into conference tournaments knowing their jobs could be in jeopardy without a few more wins.
UConn beats ECU 84-80 despite Fleming’s triple-double
GREENVILLE, N.C. (AP) — Connecticut put together one of its best offensive performances of the season. The Huskies needed it, because East Carolina's Isaac Fleming came up with another triple-double.
UConn beat the Pirates 84-80 on Sunday despite the do-it-all ECU guard.
UConn forward Eric Cobb reinstated after suspension
STORRS, Conn. (AP) — UConn forward Eric Cobb has been reinstated to the team, a month after being suspended indefinitely for conduct detrimental to the team.
The school announced the move Thursday without disclosing details about Cobb's transgression. The Hartford Courant has reported it involved a verbal exchange between Cobb and head coach Kevin Ollie.
Adams scores 19 and UConn holds off South Florida 68-65
STORRS, Conn. (AP) — Kevin Ollie didn't like the way his team played on Wednesday night, but after the stretch the Huskies just had, he'll take the win.
Jalen Adams scored 19 points and UConn snapped a three-game losing skid by holding off South Florida 68-65.
Terry Larrier and Christian Vital each added 15 points for the Huskies (12-12, 5-6 American), who had lost five of their last six.
UConn AD says Ollie will be evaluated after the season
STORRS, Conn. (AP) — University of Connecticut Athletic Director David Benedict said Tuesday that the school will fight to protect its men's basketball program, which is the subject of an NCAA investigation and that he will evaluate the future of head coach Kevin Ollie after the season.
Taylor leads UCF to rare win over UConn 70-61
ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — B.J. Taylor is making up for lost time.
After missing the first 16 games of the season with a broken foot, Taylor entered averaging a team-high 13.8 points in his first four games back for UCF. Only one of those was a win, when he scored 25 points against USF.
He had another big game Wednesday night, scoring 14 of his 20 points in the second half and the last two free throws as the Knights made 9 of 10 in the final minute to defeat UConn for just the second time ever, 70-61.
PHILADELPHIA — The beating was a bad one, the sixth time this season a proud basketball program had been hammered by at least 20 points.
Still, Kevin Ollie, the man who famously said escalators are for cowards and that rats and scavengers are the first to jump off a sinking ship, sounded intent Sunday night on taking the stairs. And leaving the rodents to their own itinerary.
A difficult season on the court has become difficult off the court for the UConn men’s basketball team.
The NCAA has notified UConn of an inquiry into its men’s basketball program, Hearst Connecticut Media has learned and the school confirmed Thursday. While the full nature of the inquiry is uncertain, some, if not all, involves areas of recruiting, according to two sources with knowledge of the situation.
Adams scores 25 points, leads UConn over Tulane 67-57
NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Jalen Adams saw opportunities for his Connecticut teammates in the first half.
In the second half he saw Tulane's defense focusing on them so he created opportunities for himself.
Adams scored 20 of his 25 points in the second half as the Huskies defeated the Green Wave, 67-57, in an American Athletic Conference game Saturday.
Adams had five of his six assists as the Huskies (10-7, 3-2 American) took a 30-22 halftime lead.
STORRS — Every game has turned into a referendum on Kevin Ollie’s ability to coach basketball.
Every errant pass, every rushed 3-point shot has opened the debate on whether Ollie’s UConn teams can run a sustainable offense and whether he deserves to return next season.
Every lapse on defense, every serious sag in energy like in the first half Saturday at the XL Center has started fiery discourse on whether Ollie deserves to return even next week.
Vital scores 18 to lead UConn to a 62-53 win over UCF
STORRS, Conn. (AP) — UConn showed one of the nation's best defensive teams that the Huskies can also guard the basket.
Christian Vital scored 18 points to lead UConn to a 62-53 win over UCF on Wednesday night.
Terry Larrier and Jalen Adams each added 13 points for Connecticut (9-7, 2-2 American), which won its second straight after a four-game losing streak.
"I think we're honestly starting to figure this thing out," said Vital.
UConn guard Gilbert out for season with shoulder injury
STORRS, Conn. (AP) — UConn says redshirt freshman point guard Alterique Gilbert will miss the rest of this season and will likely undergo another surgery on his injured left shoulder.
Gilbert, who originally dislocated the shoulder in high school, was granted an extra year of eligibility after suffering a torn labrum three games into last season.
He played six games for the Huskies this season before going down again last month after taking a hard hit in a loss to Michigan State.
Huskies to bring holiday to disadvantaged in Hartford
HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — Coach Kevin Ollie and his University of Connecticut men's basketball team are bringing the Christmas holiday to some disadvantaged children in Hartford.
The team is hosting a party on Saturday evening at the Boys & Girls Club in the city's Asylum Hill section.
The club and city officials teamed up to identify about 200 children who have been invited to attend.
UConn guard pays fine to resolve on-campus scooter incident
VERNON, Conn. (AP) — UConn guard Jalen Adams has paid a $50 fine to resolve the legal case stemming from an on-campus scooter crash earlier this month that also resulted in his one-game suspension from the team.
Adams originally was charged with misdemeanor evading responsibility after leaving the scene of the crash, which police said occurred while he and three others were racing scooters on a campus street on Nov. 8.
Vital’s career night leads UConn to 85-66 win over Boston U
HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — UConn guard Christian Vital scored a total of nine points in the Huskies first two games of the season then asked for a heart-to-heart talk with coach Kevin Ollie.
The sophomore sharpshooter responded with a career-high 30 points on Sunday to lead Connecticut to an 85-66 win over Boston University.
Vital hit 9 of 15 shots and was 4 of 10 from 3-point range.
UConn features 8 newcomers, 3 others returning from injury
STORRS, Conn. (AP) — UConn coach Kevin Ollie says it will take some time to identify specific roles for all the new players on his team.
It may also take time for everyone else to identify who those guys are wearing Huskies uniforms.
Just two players, guards Jalen Adams and Christian Vital, saw significant playing time on the team that finished a disappointing 16-17 last season, including 9-9 in the American Athletic Conference.
As far as UConn coach Kevin Ollie is concerned, it's an ideal situation.
There's no better way to prepare for a challenging early-season basketball schedule than to play an old Big East and New England rival during the exhibition season.
Plus, it's for a good cause.
Proceeds from Wednesday's exhibition against Providence at Mohegan Sun Arena (7 p.m.) will be donated to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund to aid hurricane victims.

Annual Husky run marks unofficial start to UConn season
STORRS, Conn. (AP) — The UConn's men's basketball team ended its summer workouts and unofficially began the new basketball season Wednesday by completing the annual Husky run through campus.
