Despite losing 4 seniors, Seton Hall exceeding expectations
NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — After losing four seniors to graduation and 63 percent of their scoring and rebounding, much wasn't expected of Seton Hall this season.
While starting guard Myles Powell was back along with sometimes starter Michael Nzei, few felt the young Pirates would have a shot for a fourth straight 20-win season and a fourth straight NCAA Tournament appearance.
No. 18 Villanova hits 17 3s, routs Seton Hall 80-52
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Villanova hit the bottom in early December. The Wildcats had dropped four games — as many as they had lost each of the last two seasons — and they were confronted with troubling questions.
Coach Jay Wright was stumped as the Wildcats tumbled out of the Top 25.
"This is the reality," he said of the early season malaise. "How long is this going to take?"
The roundup: Seton Hall beats Miami at Wooden Legacy
FULLERTON, Calif. (AP) — After Seton Hall raised the championship trophy that came with a thrilling 83-81 victory over Miami to win the Wooden Legacy, players celebrated by dousing coach Kevin Willard with water bottles in a postgame locker room celebration.
After three victories in four days, Willard, who was toweling off while conducting interviews, could hardly be upset at Myles Powell, who was named the tournament's most outstanding player, or anyone else.
SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. (AP) — Seton Hall has hired Duane Woodward as an assistant basketball coach.
The Big East Conference school announced Monday that Woodward would replace Fred Hill, who left after five seasons on Kevin Willard's staff to pursue new opportunities.
Woodward spent the past four seasons as an assistant at Monmouth. The New York City native who played at Boston College is expected to help recruit in the metropolitan area.
SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. (AP) — Seton Hall is getting a shot-blocking center for its basketball team.
Coach Kevin Willard announced Thursday that Ike Obiagu will transfer from Florida State and continue his education and basketball career with the Pirates. The 7-footer must sit out the 2018-19 season and will have three years of eligibility.
Obiagu appeared in 34 of 35 games and made 14 starts for Florida State as a freshman. He averaged 2.3 points, 2.6 rebounds and a team-best 2.1 blocks.
Seton Hall names Tony Skinn assistant basketball coach
SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. (AP) — Seton Hall has hired Tony Skinn as an assistant basketball coach.
Coach Kevin Willard announced the hiring Thursday. Skinn replaces Shaheen Holloway, who left to become the head coach at nearby St. Peter's University.

JERSEY CITY, N.J. (AP) — Shaheen Holloway has been named the basketball coach at St. Peter's University.
Athletic director Bryan Felt announced the hiring of the Seton Hall assistant coach on Wednesday. Holloway replaces John Dunne, who left after 12 seasons to take the coaching job at Marist.
Holloway spent the past eight seasons at Seton Hall under Kevin Willard. The Pirates went the NCAA Tournament the past three seasons.
WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — Kevin Willard was watching TV on the eve of Seton Hall's NCAA Tournament opener against North Carolina State when the self-described "Mr. Negativity" turned to his wife and asked what he would tell his core group of seniors if they lost.
Together they had resurrected a program fallen on hard times, yet success in March had been hard to achieve. Two straight years, the Pirates had been knocked out in the opening round.

No. 13 Seton Hall beats Georgetown
NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — On Friday night, after No. 13 Seton Hall practiced for the final time before playing Georgetown on Saturday, the Pirates had a special guest — none other than former Pirates coach P.J. Carlesimo.
Carlesimo, who led Seton Hall from 1982 through 1994, was in town for a special 25th anniversary presentation honoring his 1992-93 Pirates team that won both the Big East regular season and tournament championships. He paid a visit to practice and spoke to the team.

"Khadeen (Carrington) has the flu," Willard said. "Myles (Powell) turned his ankle in practice. Angel (Delgado) has had the flu and Desi (Rodriguez) is just getting over it. They all battled through practices."

No. 23 Seton Hall suspends Sanogo for violating rules
SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. (AP) — No. 23 Seton Hall says it is suspending Ismael Sanogo for violating team and university rules.
School officials announced the suspension Friday but declined to specify Sanogo's infraction.
Coach Kevin Willard said in a statement that he hopes Sanogo will make necessary changes to be "allowed back on this team."
Carrington’s 26 leads No. 23 Seton Hall past Wagner

NEW YORK (AP) — Kevin Willard's words could be construed as both his belief and a warning to those teams who will come across Seton Hall's path.
The Pirates are not a one-man team.

"Eventually teams are going to have to stop double-teaming him. ... I just think the guys around him are working with him to make it easier (for him)."

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. (AP) — Seton Hall has gotten a national letter of intent from forward Sandro Mamukelashvili.
The Big East announced the signing of the 17-year-old from the former Soviet republic of Georgia. He played at Montverde Academy in Florida last season.
Mamukelashvili joins Darnell Brodie of Newark, New Jersey and Myles Cale of Middletown, Delaware, in coach Kevin Willard's recruiting class.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Creighton has won three of its last four games to regain its traction following the mid-January loss of star point guard Maurice Watson to a season-ending knee injury.
Leading scorer Marcus Foster and 7-foot freshman Justin Patton continue to excel in Watson's absence.

Pirates coach Kevin Willard announced the player's decision on Wednesday, hours before Seton Hall was to meet Providence at the Prudential Center. The team did not say why Thomas left.
Thomas, of New York, transferred from Kansas State and sat out last season. He appeared in 10 games for the Pirates and scored 7 points in 10 games.
Seton Hall dismisses Myles Carter from basketball team
SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. (AP) — Seton Hall has dismissed Myles Carter from the basketball team for undisclosed reasons.
Coach Kevin Willard said Thursday that playing for Seton Hall is a "privilege that comes with responsibilities, and unfortunately Myles was unable to meet those standards." The coach wished him well.
Carter is from Chicago and had played 32 minutes in nine games. He played in 10 games as freshman.

NEW YORK (AP) — After his team blew a four-point lead in the closing seconds, Seton Hall coach Kevin Willard provided simple instructions.

Khadeen Carrington set up Rodriguez for a tiebreaking a layup with 11.6 seconds left and Seton Hall beat No. 16 South Carolina 67-64 in the Under Armour Reunion at Madison Square Garden on Monday night.
Pickens scores 21, Stanford beats Seton Hall 66-52
LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (AP) — Dorian Pickens had 21 points and Reid Travis added 16 as Stanford beat Seton Hall 66-52 Sunday in the fifth-place game at the AdvoCare Invitational.
Pickens picked up nine points in a 15-1 surge as Stanford (6-1) grabbed a 43-31 advantage with 12:30 to play.
"Dorian is so smooth, so confident, so fluid," Stanford coach Jerod Haase said.
Pickens averaged 18.3 points in his three invitational games.
Rodriguez, Nzei lead Seton Hall over Quinnipiac 90-79
LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (AP) — For much of the night, Seton Hall had its hands full with Quinnipiac.
The Pirates got 23 points and 11 rebounds from Desi Rodriguez, but also needed a late spark from Michael Nzei to finish off a 90-79 victory in the AdvoCare Invitational at Disney World on Friday night.
Seton Hall topples Iowa 91-83
IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Seton Hall no longer has star Isaiah Whitehead to lean on.
The Pirates have depth and balance though — and that was enough for them to pass their first road test of 2016-17.
Myles Powell scored 26 points off the bench, Desi Rodriguez had 25 and Seton Hall beat Iowa 91-83 on Thursday night.
Khadeen Carrington added 20 points for the Pirates (3-0), who shot 51 percent from the floor with eight 3s and outscored the Hawkeyes 50-24 in the paint.
Point guard Madison Jones helps Seton Hall beat FDU, 91-70
SOUTH ORANGE — The biggest question coming into the season for Seton Hall basketball: Is there a pass-first point guard to feed all the talent at other positions?
After one game, the answer is encouraging.
Wake Forest graduate transfer Madison Jones was that guy as the Pirates notched a 91-70 victory over Fairleigh Dickinson on Friday before a capacity crowd of 1,865 at Walsh Gym.
"I think he passed his first test," Hall coach Kevin Willard said.
