What happened to Raiders’ and Jets’ rebuilding plans?
For all those fans of the Raiders and Jets who believed in that rebuilding-program message, their teams have handed them a big "never mind" this week.
Bears hire Monachino as senior assistant, OLBs coach
LAKE FOREST, Ill. (AP) — The Chicago Bears have hired former Indianapolis Colts defensive coordinator Ted Monachino as senior defensive assistant and outside linebackers coach.
Monachino worked for new Bears defensive coordinator Chuck Pagano in Indianapolis and with him on John Harbaugh's staff in Baltimore. He was a senior defensive analyst for Missouri last season and was hired as Kansas State's defensive coordinator and linebackers coach in December.
Bears hire Pagano as defensive coordinator to replace Fangio
LAKE FOREST, Ill. (AP) — The Chicago Bears rode a dominant defense to the NFC North championship in a breakout season. They hope to keep it going with a new coordinator.
The Bears hired former Indianapolis Colts coach Chuck Pagano to replace Vic Fangio on Friday, hoping he can help them build on what they accomplished this season.
Elway: Fangio ‘as good of a football coach as you can find’
ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — All Vic Fangio ever wanted to do was teach kids and become a head high school football coach, and he figured he was on his way when his first job out of college was tutoring linebackers at his alma mater, Dunmore High School in Pennsylvania in 1979.
Fangio proved too good for preps and quickly moved on to the pros, where he's spent 34 years as an assistant.
Eagles OC Mike Groh has familiarity with Bears DC Vic Fangio
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Mike Groh's transition from wide receivers coach to offensive coordinator for the Philadelphia Eagles has been bumpy.
His familiarity with Vic Fangio's defense could give the team a slight edge against the Chicago Bears.
NFC North champion Bears look to keep rolling in playoffs
LAKE FOREST, Ill. (AP) — The Chicago Bears are rolling into their first playoff appearance in eight years, with nine wins in 10 games and their sights set on a bigger prize after capturing the NFC North.
"This is where it gets real," coach Matt Nagy said Monday.
Bears clinch No. 3 seed with 14-9 win over 49ers
SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — With a dominant defense behind him, Mitchell Trubisky knows the Chicago Bears' offense doesn't have to do too much to keep winning.
That formula has the Bears heading into the season finale with a chance to earn a first-round playoff bye.
Trubisky threw one TD pass and the Chicago defense used a couple of key late stops to keep San Francisco out of the end zone, leading the Bears to their eighth win in nine games, 14-9 over the 49ers on Sunday.
49ers get to see what they missed when they face Mack, Bears
SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — Back before the season started and Khalil Mack was on the trading block from Oakland, the Chicago Bears and San Francisco 49ers were two of the teams in hottest pursuit of the star pass rusher.
The Bears won that competition and are headed to the playoffs for the first time in eight years, while the 49ers are headed to another disappointing finish thanks in part to a lack of defensive playmakers.
Bears clinch 1st playoff berth since 2010, beat Packers
CHICAGO (AP) — Mitchell Trubisky threw for two touchdowns, Eddie Jackson ended Aaron Rodgers' NFL-record streak without an interception and the Chicago Bears clinched the NFC North with a 24-17 victory over the Green Bay Packers on Sunday.
The Bears (10-4) secured their first playoff appearance since the 2010 team won the division, and clinching with a rare victory over their heated rivals made it all the more sweet.
Chicago’s Matt Nagy picked by AP writers top coach in 2018
Matt Nagy is making an impressive first impression as an NFL head coach.
Nagy has helped develop second-year quarterback Mitchell Trubisky into a solid NFL starter, convinced Vic Fangio to stay on as defensive coordinator, and has the Chicago Bears in position to earn their first playoff berth since 2010 in his first year on the job.
Rams’ consistent O- line vows to rebound from Chicago woes
THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. (AP) — For nearly two full seasons, the Los Angeles Rams' offensive line has been the epitome of consistent excellence and the bedrock of a wildly prolific offense.
When the line failed to reach its own lofty standards last weekend, the Rams (11-2) were reminded just how much they rely on those five blockers to allow Jared Goff and Todd Gurley to do their thing.
Protecting Rodgers at a premium when Packers face Bears
GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — Packers right tackle Jason Spriggs saw no need to keep going on and on about Bears linebacker Khalil Mack.
There's plenty of film to watch. The rest of that Chicago defense is pretty good, too.
Now Green Bay must face the NFC's top-ranked unit on the road on Sunday, a week after Chicago tripped up the high-octane Los Angeles Rams at Soldier Field.
Bears Khalil Mack has got the Giants’ attention
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — Want to get the New York Giants' attention this week? Just mention Chicago Bears linebacker Khalil Mack.
It's instant respect for one of the leading contenders for NFL Defensive Player of the Year.
Mack has been a force in his first year with the Bears (8-3). Despite missing two games, he leads the NFL with five forced fumbles and leads the team with eight sacks. That's gone a long way in helping NFL North-leading Chicago become the fourth-ranked defense.
Singletary talks playing, coaching from high school to NFL
Hall of Fame linebacker and former NFL coach Mike Singletary is back on the sidelines at a private school in Texas while at the same time preparing to coach the Memphis entry in the new Alliance of American Football league. Singletary talks to PodcastOne Sports Now about how it is often difficult for star players to become successful coaches, and what he's doing to try and change that.
For Bears, handling success is unfamiliar territory
LAKE FOREST, Ill. (AP) — With a tighter grip on the NFC North, the Chicago Bears are in unfamiliar territory and facing a different kind of challenge as the season heads toward its final stretch.
Learning to handle success.
"We have to make sure that we just continue to keep those blinders on, keep the earmuffs on, don't listen to anything and just keep playing our football," coach Matt Nagy said.
Bears beat Vikings 25-20, tighten grip on NFC North
CHICAGO (AP) — No doubt about it now, the Bears really are serious about winning the NFC North.
Khalil Mack had a sack and fumble recovery, Eddie Jackson returned an interception for a touchdown and Chicago tightened its grip on the division with a 25-20 victory over the second-place Minnesota Vikings on Sunday night.
Mack and Jackson led a dominant effort by the defense. And Chicago (7-3) took a big step toward its first division championship since 2010.
Suspect in barber’s death surrenders, charged with murder
CHICAGO (AP) — A suburban Chicago man has been charged with first-degree murder in the fatal shooting of a barber to Chicago Bears players.
Harvey Police Chief Gregory Thomas said Wednesday that Perry Gosa of Matteson was jealous of his ex-girlfriend's new boyfriend. The 27-year-old Gosa allegedly chased Mike Carney through Harvey in his vehicle before shooting the 26-year-old Carney in the parking lot of a Harvey gasoline station on Oct. 21.

Bears get Khalil Mack back for game with Lions
LAKE FOREST, Ill. (AP) — Khalil Mack will save some secrets for the Detroit Lions on Sunday at Soldier Field.
Asked if he would be 100 percent healthy or hindered by the sprained right ankle he suffered Oct. 14, the Chicago Bears' pass rusher smiled on Friday, but hedged.
"You want me to give up everything?" Mack said. "When I get there, I'm going to try to be myself."
XTECH shouldering its way into locker rooms on all levels
EAST HANOVER, N.J. (AP) — At 43, Baylor coach Matt Rhule is far removed from a playing career. That doesn't mean he won't run the gauntlet with his guys to prove a point.
When Rhule was helping turn around the program at Temple, he already had many of his players outfitted with XTECH shoulder pads, a revolutionary protective device that is gaining traction on all levels of football.
Mack, Allen Robinson just about ready to return to Bears
LAKE FOREST, Ill. (AP) — Two-time All-Pro pass rusher Khalil Mack and top receiver Allen Robinson look as if they're just about ready to return after missing the Chicago Bears' past two games because of injuries.
Both players practiced without limitations Thursday for the second consecutive day.
The NFC North-leading Bears hope to have them back in the lineup against the Detroit Lions at Soldier Field on Sunday.
Chicago Bears rout turnover-prone Buffalo Bills 41-9
ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) — Linebacker Khalil Mack broke into a wide grin when it was pointed out the Chicago Bears defense didn't need him for a second straight week.
"Ha, I might be looking for another job here soon," Mack told The Associated Press.
Sidelined by a right ankle injury, Mack had plenty of reason to joke.
Bears’ Mack is out, Ansah in for Lions and Diggs is inactive
Star linebacker Khalil Mack is missing his second straight game for Chicago Bears, who will face turnover-prone Nathan Peterman after the Buffalo Bills ruled out quarterback Derek Anderson because of a concussion.
Raiders release leading pass rusher Bruce Irvin
ALAMEDA, Calif. (AP) — The Oakland Raiders waived Bruce Irvin on Saturday after the team's leading pass rusher had his playing time reduced significantly in recent weeks.
Irvin played just nine snaps in a 34-3 loss to the San Francisco 49ers on Thursday night. He will be subject to waivers and will be owed about $3.8 million for the rest of the season if he isn't claimed next week.
Bears place Long in IR with right foot injury
LAKE FOREST, Ill. (AP) — The Chicago Bears placed right guard Kyle Long on injured reserve Saturday because of a tendon injury in his right foot.
The move means the NFC North-leading Bears (4-3) will be without Long for at least eight weeks.
The three-time Pro Bowl lineman was injured in the closing minutes of the Bears' 24-10 victory over the New York Jets last weekend. Tight end Dion Sims rolled into Long while the two were blocking for Jordan Howard on a run.

Chiefs’ Dee Ford lining himself up for big payday next year
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Dee Ford insists he isn't motivated by money, and considering he's making nearly $9 million this season, the Chiefs linebacker is probably telling the truth when he claims he has everything he needs.
Well, he'd better start building a list wants.
After four years spent scratching at his potential, only to have injuries get in the way, the former first-round draft pick is having a breakout season in a contract year.
Bears’ defense dominates even with Mack out of lineup
CHICAGO (AP) — The Chicago Bears showed they could dominate on defense, even with Khalil Mack out of the lineup.
Then again, playing the Jets didn't hurt.
The Bears were ready without Mack, shutting down Sam Darnold and New York's struggling offense in a 24-10 victory Sunday they sorely needed.
"We played together," linebacker Aaron Lynch said. "We played as one, we played aggressive and we had fun doing it. And we attacked the field every time we went out there."
Trubisky throws 2 TDs as Bears beat Jets 24-10
CHICAGO (AP) — The Chicago Bears got the win they sorely needed, only to lose another key player.
Guard Kyle Long had to be helped off the field in the closing minutes with an injured right foot, putting a damper on a 24-10 victory over the New York Jets on Sunday.
Arrest warrant issued for suspect in barber’s shooting death
CHICAGO (AP) — An arrest warrant has been issued for a suburban Chicago man suspected in the shooting death of a barber to Chicago Bears players.
Michael Carney was shot at a gasoline station in Harvey as his 5-year-old daughter sat in an auto. City spokesman Sean Howard says the 26-year-old Carney was able to get into the car and drive four blocks before losing consciousness.
The Cook County medical examiner's office says Carney died from several gunshot wounds.
Raiders QB Derek Carr tries to ignore criticism
ALAMEDA, Calif. (AP) — Derek Carr's No. 1 receiver has been traded just weeks after the Oakland Raiders dealt away another cornerstone player in Khalil Mack. Carr has just one win, has struggled to adjust to coach Jon Gruden's offense and has taken more of a physical beating than he has at any time during his five-year career.
As if that wasn't enough, he also has had to deal with reports that unidentified teammates have lost faith in him and his toughness has been questioned.
Raiders heading into rebuild mode following Cooper trade
ALAMEDA, Calif. (AP) — Soon after Jon Gruden arrived for his second stint as Oakland Raiders coach last winter he called Amari Cooper a "focal point" of the offense and pointed to Khalil Mack as a reason why he came back to coaching.
Less than two months into his first season back in Oakland, both former Pro Bowlers are gone.
Bears searching for answers after problem areas surface
Losing consecutive games for the first time exposed several flaws with the Chicago Bears.
Although coach Matt Nagy sees no easy fix after a 38-31 loss to the New England Patriots, he believes solutions are within reach for problems with Mitchell Trubisky's passing, a fading pass rush, and a feeble running attack.
Bears’ Khalil Mack practices but questionable for Patriots
LAKE FOREST, Ill. (AP) — Bears linebacker Khalil Mack must wait until just before game time to learn if he gets a chance to rush New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady at Soldier Field.
Mack played through an ankle injury in Chicago's last game, a 31-28 loss to Miami. On Friday, he practiced for the first time this week, although on a limited basis. Bears coach Matt Nagy says he thought Mack "moved around pretty good."
Belichick: Don’t compare Bears’ Mack to LT just yet
LAKE FOREST, Ill. (AP) — No matter how dominant Chicago Bears star pass rusher Khalil Mack is, New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick wanted to make one thing clear.
He's no L.T.
"Wait a minute, we're talking about Lawrence Taylor now," Belichick said Wednesday. "Yeah, I'm not putting anybody in Lawrence Taylor's class. So, you can put everybody down below that. With a lot of respect to a lot of good players now, but we're talking about Lawrence Taylor."
Bears pass rusher Khalil Mack day to day with ankle injury
LAKE FOREST, Ill. (AP) — Chicago Bears star pass rusher Khalil Mack is day to day because of an ankle injury, coach Matt Nagy said on Wednesday.
Mack was hurt early in last week's overtime loss at Miami and his 2018 streak of at least one sack and one forced fumble in each game ended. Playing without the two-time All-Pro would be a huge blow, particularly with Tom Brady and the New England Patriots visiting on Sunday.
After loss, Matt Nagy, Bears deal with big dose of adversity
LAKE FOREST, Ill. (AP) — After three weeks of success, adversity hit the Chicago Bears in waves.
An injury to pass rusher Khalil Mack, a key missed field goal, turnovers at critical times, penalties, and a faltering defense all combined to help take down the Bears 31-28 in overtime Sunday against the Miami Dolphins.
Bears’ defense suddenly shaky in 31-28 OT loss at Miami
MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — The Miami Dolphins devised a simple plan to keep Khalil Mack out of their backfield.
"We had about four guys blocking him," Miami coach Adam Gase said.
But what happened to the rest of the Chicago Bears' defense? A unit stirring memories of the Bears' glory days gave up 541 yards Sunday in a 31-28 overtime loss.
Dolphins’ injury-depleted line must try to block Bears’ Mack
MIAMI (AP) — Last week, the Miami Dolphins resorted to eight-man pass protection, so desperate were they to slow an onslaught against quarterback Ryan Tannehill.
And now they have to block Khalil Mack.
That will be a daunting task when Miami faces the Chicago Bears on Sunday in a matchup of first-place teams headed in opposite directions.
Bears reach bye with different view: from top of NFC North
LAKE FOREST, Ill. (AP) — The Chicago Bears rolled into their bye with their most lopsided victory in six seasons and sole possession of the NFC North lead for the first time in five years.
For a team long buried at the bottom of the division, it's a different look. Just don't tell coach Matt Nagy the Bears are the surprise of the NFL.
Bears’ ‘D’ gets help from ‘O’ in 48-10 romp over Bucs
CHICAGO (AP) — For most of the season, it's been a solo act for Khalil Mack and the Chicago Bears' defense.
After quarterback Mitchell Trubisky's breakthrough game Sunday, the Bears' defense and offense seem to be in sync.
The defense made three interceptions and Mack continued pressuring the quarterback, while Trubisky threw for a career-high six touchdown passes in the Bears' 48-10 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Mitchell Trubisky has no problem with reduced Bears offense
LAKE FOREST, Ill. (AP) — Chicago Bears coach Matt Nagy might reduce his offense for Sunday's game against Tampa Bay.
What hasn't been reduced is his support or long-term expectations for quarterback Mitchell Trubisky.
Derrick Johnson not concerned about Raiders pass rush
ALAMEDA, Calif. (AP) — Middle linebacker Derrick Johnson isn't as troubled as most people seem to be by the Oakland Raiders' lack of a pass rush.
The way Johnson sees it, there are other ways for the defense to impact games.
Yet with only two sacks in two games, Johnson also realizes something has to change.
Khalil Mack, Bears defense look to turn sacks into turnovers
LAKE FOREST, Ill. (AP) — In just a few weeks, linebacker Khalil Mack and the Chicago Bears defense feel they've established an identity.
The identity is no secret: They're coming after the quarterback and the football.
The Bears hope to build momentum Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals after they beat Seattle 24-17 Monday night. And a defense leading the NFL in sacks is giving them a shot at climbing over .500 for the first time since September 2014.
New coaches get off to rough starts in 2018
ALAMEDA, Calif. (AP) — Jon Gruden was welcomed back to Oakland as a returning hero when he got hired for his second stint as coach of the Raiders.
There was a party he hosted for fans at a local sports bar, loud ovations in the preseason and a heightened level of excitement that Gruden could get the Raiders back to being the consistent winner they were during his first stint that started two decades ago.
Bears win despite up-down performance by Trubisky
CHICAGO (AP) — Mitchell Trubisky started fast, slowed down and picked it up down the stretch.
Despite another inconsistent performance by their prized quarterback, the Bears pulled out their first win.
Khalil Mack had one of six sacks against Russell Wilson, Prince Amukamara returned an interception 49 yards for a touchdown and Chicago beat the Seattle Seahawks 24-17 Monday night to give coach Matt Nagy his first career victory.
Mack, Amukamara lead Bears over Seahawks 24-17
CHICAGO (AP) — Khalil Mack once again put on the sort of havoc-wreaking show the Chicago Bears envisioned when they traded for the superstar pass rusher.
Even better for them, they came away with the victory this time.
Mack had one of six sacks against Russell Wilson, Prince Amukamara returned an interception 49 yards for a touchdown and the Bears beat the Seattle Seahawks 24-17 Monday night to give coach Matt Nagy his first career victory.
Gruden says no regrets over Mack trade despite 0-2 start
ALAMEDA, Calif. (AP) — Coach Jon Gruden was in no mood to rehash Denver's final drive that handed the Oakland Raiders a second straight defeat to open his tenure as coach.
Case Keenum and the Broncos were able to move the ball down the field with little pressure in the heat and altitude of Denver and get a 36-yard field goal from Brandon McManus in the closing seconds of a 20-19 victory Sunday.
Mack off to good start, Bears try to rebound against Seattle
LAKE FOREST, Ill. (AP) — Khalil Mack sat out offseason workouts and the preseason, had just one week to learn a new system following a blockbuster trade, and still managed to dominate in his debut for the Chicago Bears.
The two-time All-Pro performed exactly as envisioned in a prime-time opener.
The Bears hope for more of that when they host Russell Wilson and the Seattle Seahawks on Monday night. They'd just like a different outcome.
