Khalil Tate returning to Arizona for senior season
TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) — Arizona quarterback Khalil Tate will return for his senior season.
Tate made the decision Tuesday after talking it over with his family and Wildcats coach Kevin Sumlin.
Tate instantly made a name for himself as a sophomore, setting an FBS rushing record for a quarterback with 327 yards after replacing injured started Brandon Dawkins against Colorado.
No. 9 Washington State looking to keep CFP hopes alive

Line: Washington State by 10.
Series record: Arizona leads 27-16.
WHAT'S AT STAKE?
Washington State looking to stay on track for its first Pac-12 North title and longshot bid for a College Football Playoff berth. The Cougars seek their first 10-win season since 2003. Arizona is seeking to become bowl eligible in Coach Kevin Sumlin's first season.
Tate’s 5 TD passes lead Arizona to 42-34 win over Colorado
TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) — Khalil Tate beat Colorado with his legs last year in a record-setting performance.
The Arizona quarterback took down the Buffaloes with his arm in the rematch.
Tate threw for career-high 350 yards and five touchdowns after setting an FBS rushing record against Colorado a year ago, lifting Arizona to a 42-34 victory over the Buffaloes Friday night.
Colorado prepared for Arizona’s Tate second time around
TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) — Colorado went into its game against Arizona last season game planning to stop quarterback Brandon Dawkins.
When Dawkins went down after a late hit out of bounds, Khalil Tate ran all over the Buffaloes for 327 yards, an FBS record by a quarterback.
Tate has been hampered by an ankle injury this season and hasn't put up the same prodigious numbers he did last season, but Colorado knows all too well what he's capable of once he gets rolling.
Tate returns, Arizona rolls over No. 19 Oregon 44-15
TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) — J.J. Taylor burst through holes and leaped over defenders. Khalil Tate was sharp in his return. The defense created turnovers, so did special teams.
Stuck in a recent rut, Arizona picked a great time to play its best game of the season.
Taylor ran for 212 yards and two touchdowns, Tate threw for three scores and the Wildcats dominated No. 19 Oregon 44-15 on Saturday night.
Arizona QB Rhett Rodriguez makes first start against UCLA
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Kevin Sumlin's last trip to the Rose Bowl was a nightmare as UCLA rallied in the fourth quarter to beat Texas A&M. The first-year Arizona coach now faces a return without his best player as the Wildcats face UCLA.
Bears head to Arizona looking for first Pac-12 victory
The California Bears made a brief appearance in the national rankings before slamming back to earth with a 42-24 home loss to Oregon last weekend.
Now the Bears (3-1, 0-1 Pac-12) travel to Tucson on Saturday night to face Arizona, seeking a bit of redemption as well as their first Pac-12 victory. Arizona (2-3, 1-1) is coming off a 24-20 home loss to USC.
STAT WATCH: Sun Devils’ Benjamin 1st to break 300-yard mark
Eno Benjamin turned in the best rushing performance in the Football Bowl Subdivision this season and became the first Arizona State player to go over 300 yards when he ran 30 times for 312 against Oregon State.
The total was the highest since Arizona quarterback Khalil Tate went for 327 yards against Colorado last October.
USC to keep a close eye on Arizona’s Tate
TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) — Khalil Tate has been limited by an ankle injury and has yet to reel off long touchdown runs as he did while becoming a Heisman Trophy candidate a year ago.
Southern California is not about to forget about Arizona's junior quarterback Saturday night in the desert. The Trojans (2-2, 1-1 Pac-12) know all it takes is one missed assignment or tackle and they'll be looking at the back of Tate's jersey as he races off to the end zone.
USC’s defense still looking for first interception
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Southern California has broken up the most passes in college football this season.
However, none of those 29 plays have resulted in an interception for the Trojans, one of five FBS teams without a pick. The other 12 teams with at least 20 pass breakups have produced an average of 4.75 interceptions, including Alabama and Illinois with seven each.
It is an oddity USC would like to resolve against Arizona quarterback Khalil Tate on Saturday.
Taylor runs wild as Arizona thrashes Oregon State, 35-14
CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) — After an explosive game, Arizona running back J.J. Taylor was asked what was working well for him.
"The offensive line," he responded, then chuckled. "All the stuff that we do at practice just showed up today."
Taylor rushed for a Reser Stadium-record 284 yards and two touchdowns, including a 62-yard sprint, as Arizona ran wild over Oregon State 35-14 in the Pac-12 opener on Saturday afternoon.

Arizona visits Oregon State with focus on Tate’s ankle
The previous time he faced Oregon State, Arizona quarterback Khalil Tate rushed for more than 200 yards and two touchdowns. When he sees the Beavers on Saturday, he may have to rely more on his arm.
Tate tweaked his left ankle and his normally potent running ability has been slowed this season. But last week, the dual-threat got his arm going and threw for a career-high 349 yards and five touchdowns in a 62-31 rout of Southern Utah. He had just four carries.
Washington State’s Minshew is a QB to watch in the Pac-12
At the beginning of the season, Washington State coach Mike Leach played coy with the media — as he often does — over his choice for starting quarterback.
The Cougars had four candidates and Leach wryly said it would be a "thrill a minute" to discover which one would emerge.
Tate throws for 349 yards, 5 TDs as Arizona routs S. Utah
TUSCON, Ariz. (AP) — A sore ankle seems to be slowing that dynamic breakaway speed of Khalil Tate. But the Arizona quarterback sure can still throw the ball.
Tate passed for a career-best 349 yards and five touchdowns, then sat out most of the fourth quarter and Arizona gave Kevin Sumlin his first victory as Wildcats coach with a 62-31 rout of Southern Utah on Saturday night.
After 0-2 start, Arizona looks to S. Utah for 1st win
The Kevin Sumlin era in Tucson has gotten off to a rocky start, to say the least.
The Wildcats, a team that some college football pundits thought might contend in the Pac-12 South, are 0-2 and coming off a 45-18 rout at Houston.
Fortunately, for the Wildcats, Arizona appears to have a team it can finally beat Saturday night in FCS foe Southern Utah (0-2), which lost 48-25 at Oregon State last weekend.
Arizona limps to 0-2 start in Kevin Sumlin’s first season
Arizona was supposed to be the team in the Grand Canyon State that would have the easiest time transitioning to a new coach. Kevin Sumlin was taking over a program that had a Heisman Trophy front-runner, an explosive offense and the potential to be better on defense.
But while No. 23 Arizona State has won its first two games under Herm Edwards, Arizona is 0-2 under Sumlin and facing a litany of issues.
Arizona looks to be more consistent against Houston
HOUSTON (AP) — Arizona coach Kevin Sumlin wants to see more consistency from his team after the Wildcats struggled to score for the first three quarters in a 28-23 loss to BYU.
He hopes the changes start Saturday when the Wildcats (0-1) travel to face his former team in Houston (1-0).
"We have to be more consistent for four quarters," Sumlin said. "If you run 42 plays in the first half and have 10 points, that's not the efficiency that you need."
BYU spoils Sumlin’s debut with 28-23 win over Arizona
TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) — Brigham Young's offensive line pushed Arizona around. Tanner Mangum was effective in his return from an Achilles' tendon injury. The Cougars kept Khalil Tate from breaking off any big runs.
BYU expected to be better after a four-win season ago and sure seems to be after opening the season with a road win over a Pac-12 team.
Squally Canada scored on three short runs and BYU spoiled Kevin Sumlin's Arizona coaching debut with a 28-23 win over the Wildcats on Saturday night.
Arizona opens first season with Kevin Sumlin against BYU
TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) — The hype began when Kevin Sumlin was hired in January. The former Texas A&M coach known for bringing in high-level recruits and developing quarterbacks was being heralded as the man who would turn Arizona into a Pac-12 and maybe someday national-title contender.
For Sumlin's first season in the desert, he has one of the nation's most dynamic quarterbacks in Khalil Tate, an explosive offense, a bigger, deeper defense.
Pac-12 football players poised to break out in the fall
Some of the Pac-12 Conference players who could have breakout seasons and be impact players in 2018:
QB Khalil Tate, junior. Tate already had a breakout season in 2017, accounting for nearly 1,600 yards passing, 1,400 more rushing and 26 TDs despite starting the season as a backup. He has a new coach in Mike Sumlin and a new position coach in Noel Mazzone, who has a reputation for turning good quarterbacks into great ones.

There were three members from last season's Arizona coaching staff: Defensive coordinator Marcel Yates, senior defensive analyst Chuck Cecil and wide receivers coach Theron Aych.
Aych joined the staff at the start of the 2017 season after coaching at UTEP in 2016, and mentored players like Shun Brown, Tony Ellison and 6-foot-5 wide out Shawn Poindexter. All three players combined for 1,465 yards.
New OC Rod Smith vows to spice up Illinois offense
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) — Rod Smith had a bit of music for the ears of Illinois fans who watched the Illini scuffle along on offense last season.
"We're going to try to make them defend (the entire field)," said Smith, who was formally introduced Friday as the new offensive coordinator at Illinois. "I think the hardest skill to do in football is tackle a skill-kid in open field. . We're going to try to get guys out in space."
Illinois hires Arizona’s Rod Smith as offensive coordinator
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) — Illinois has hired Arizona assistant Rod Smith as its offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.
Smith spent six years with the Wildcats and has been a coach for 22 years, focusing on the offensive side of the ball.
Greg Hansen: Arizona’s new coach, offense must be Khalil Tate-friendly; otherwise, we’re wasting time
No matter who Arizona hires as its football coach, nobody outside Tucson is picking the Wildcats to go to the Rose Bowl next year, or even to win the Pac-12 South.
But for the first time ever — or close to ever — the Wildcats have a singular offensive player, quarterback Khalil Tate, who has such star-power and is so essential to the school’s football restoration, that it seemed natural for him to sit next to UA president Robert C. Robbins Thursday at McKale Center.
No concerns about Arizona QB Khalil Tate transferring; he’s a ‘Wildcat for life’
Coaching changes invariably are accompanied by attrition. A handful of players, at a minimum, end up transferring because of schematic and personality conflicts with the new staff.
Arizona Wildcats quarterback Khalil Tate will not be one of them.
Tate’s mother told the Star Tuesday that her son is committed to Arizona no matter the identity of the next Wildcats coach.
A month into the 2017 campaign, Khalil Tate had 41 passing yards and 86 rushing yards, no touchdowns either way, and one interception.
A month later, he was the talk of college football.
Next year? The sky may be the limit for the Wildcats' wildly exciting quarterback, who will only be a junior in 2018. Can he top his astounding 2017 campaign, which included three — count 'em, three — 200-yard rushing performances, highlighted by a breakout game the likes of which have never been seen before.
QB Donavan Tate no longer with Arizona Wildcats; family reasons cited for departure
SAN FRANCISCO – The Donavan Tate experiment, at least at Arizona, is over.
The MLB draft bust-turned-college quarterback has left the program, Wildcats coach Rich Rodriguez confirmed Sunday. Rodriguez said Tate – no relation to UA starting QB Khalil Tate – wanted to be closer to his family in Georgia. Tate has a wife and three small kids.
“It’s been tough on him,” Rodriguez said. “I love Donavan. He’s a great young man.”
Only victory in Foster Farms Bowl would ensure Arizona Wildcats’ glass is half full
SAN FRANCISCO — As they delve deeper into preparations for the fast-approaching Foster Farms Bowl, the Arizona Wildcats have a single goal in mind:
Finish what they started.
Remember when Arizona was 6-2 at the end of October? Remember when the Wildcats snuck into the College Football Playoff rankings?
Arizona Wildcats QB Brandon Dawkins has options for next year, but he’s delaying any talk about his future
When Brandon Dawkins was a freshman in high school, a touted quarterback transferred in from out of town. Luke Falk was older, and he had a scholarship offer from Florida State.
Falk initially won the job at Southern California’s Oaks Christian High. But Dawkins eventually overtook him and became a three-year starter.
“As long as I’ve played,” Dawkins said, “I’ve never been one to run from competition.”
Alsadek has a problem with the Pac-12, which unveiled its all-conference selections Tuesday. No Arizona player was selected to the Pac-12’s first or second team.
The Wildcats, who went 7-5 in the regular season, weren’t completely shut out. UA linebacker Colin Schooler won Pac-12 defensive freshman of the year, running back J.J. Taylor was co-offensive freshman of the year and six Wildcats were honorable-mention selections.

Selection Sunday arrives, and Arizona Wildcats are dreaming of Las Vegas
Selection Sunday in college football bowl season is quite different than in college basketball.
For starters, nobody’s really on the bubble. Every school with the required six wins has a general idea of where they might go.
Where the 7-5 Arizona Wildcats will go bowling is still somewhat up in the air, and largely dependent on how the College Football Playoff selection committee views the Pac-12 Conference.
Arizona’s players know where they want to go: Las Vegas.
Arizona Wildcats rewind: Five takeaways from the UA’s 42-30 loss at Arizona State
Every Monday throughout the season, we’ll take a look back at the Arizona Wildcats’ previous game after re-watching it via the TV broadcast and present five key takeaways. Here are the five from the UA’s 42-30 loss at Arizona State on Saturday night:
Arizona State rallies for 42-30 win over rival Arizona
TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — Todd Graham held the Territorial Cup aloft for all in Sun Devil Stadium to see. The prize for college football's oldest rivalry was his and so is his job — at least for now.
Demario Richard ran for 165 yards and two touchdowns, Manny Wilkins threw for three more scores, and Arizona State may have saved Graham's job with a 42-30 victory over rival Arizona on Saturday.
Pac-12 picks: From the Territorial Cup to the Rumble in the Rockies, plenty of meaningful football still left
The Territorial Cup, the Civil War, the Apple Cup and the Rumble in the Rockies. Two of these games have major implications, but with the college football season winding down, you might as well get try to get to all four.
Cal at UCLA
UCLA by 7 – The weekend Pac-12 slate opens and closes with games between five-win teams hunting for bowl eligibility. It often comes down to the quarterbacks in these scenarios, so advantage Bruins. The pick: UCLA 42, Cal 35.
Demetri Burch didn’t play in the game but was rewarded with a game ball by coach Willie Taggart inside a boisterous locker room after Oregon’s 48-28 victory over Arizona on Saturday.
The true freshman from Apopka, Fla., helped prepare Jim Leavitt’s defense for the challenge by simulating star quarterback Khalil Tate on the scout team.
Khalil Tate was the most electrifying player in the country for six weeks.
Oregon’s defensive players said Arizona’s dynamic dual-threat superstar was the second-best quarterback they faced this week.
Tate certainly played second-fiddle to Justin Herbert during Oregon’s 48-28 victory over Arizona on Saturday night at Autzen Stadium.
Justin Herbert was back, but Oregon’s fourth-string quarterback got as much praise as the starter.
Demetri Burch still hasn’t played a game for the Ducks, but his impersonation of Khalil Tate in practice during the past two weeks was credited with keeping the Arizona quarterback contained in Oregon’s 48-28 win over the Wildcats on Saturday night at Autzen Stadium.
Herbert returns, Oregon beats Arizona 48-28
EUGENE, Ore. (AP) — The Ducks obviously missed Justin Herbert.
Oregon's starting quarterback returned after a five-game absence and helped lead the team to a 48-28 victory over Arizona on Saturday night. Royce Freeman ran for four touchdowns in the win, which made Ducks (6-5, 3-4) bowl eligible in coach Willie Taggart's first year as head coach.
Here are three things to watch in the Arizona Wildcats’ game vs. Oregon at Autzen Stadium (Saturday, 5 p.m., Pac-12 Networks), plus a score prediction and some pertinent preview links:
After meeting in the Pac-12 championship game three years ago, Oregon and Arizona tripped at the top of the stairs and tumbled cleats over helmets into the conference basement.
The Ducks went 9-4 in 2015 and 4-8 in 2016, including a 2-7 record in Pac-12 play (last in the North Division).
The Wildcats went 7-6 in 2015 and 3-9 in 2016, including a 1-8 record in Pac-12 play (last in the South Division).
Greg Hansen: ‘Mr. Football’ weighs on Oregon flippers, Khalil Tate’s Heisman chances and Arizona’s best coach
Dear Mr. Football: Do all of the football people who flipped from Arizona to Oregon have happy endings?
A: The first flipper, and the biggest, was Arizona coach Tex Oliver. His famous "Blue Brigade" teams went 32-11-4 at the UA from 1933-37, and in the final game of the ’37 season — 80 years ago this season — he stomped the favored Ducks 20-6 in Tucson.
Herbert could be back for Ducks against Arizona
EUGENE, Ore. (AP) — Quarterback Justin Herbert appears poised to return from a broken collarbone but so far there's no definitive word from Oregon.
The Ducks (5-5, 2-5 Pac-12) host the Arizona Wildcats and their star QB Khalil Tate on Saturday with Herbert's status in the air. Will he start? Will he be available? The Ducks aren't saying on the record.
