HOBART, Australia (AP) — Belinda Bencic eased into the quarterfinals at the WTA Tour's Hobart International, beating Australian wild card Zoe Hives 6-2, 6-4.
Hives pulled off an upset when she beat Johanna Larsson to reach the second round but couldn't repeat that form against a polished Bencic, who set up a quarterfinal against 18-year-old Ukrainian Dayana Yastremska.
Top-seeded Jelena Ostapenko reaches 2nd round of Korea Open
SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — Top-seeded Jelena Ostapenko beat Lara Arruabarrena 6-3, 6-3 to advance to the second round of the Korea Open on Wednesday.
Ostapenko, the 2017 French Open champion, broke her opponent five times while notching up 32 winners to 29 unforced errors.
"She's a very good player and very consistent," Ostapenko said. "Today was a good match for me, especially for the first round because first rounds are always tough."
NUREMBERG, Germany (AP) — Kirsten Flipkens ended Kiki Bertens' bid for a third straight Nuremberg Cup title on Friday with a 5-7, 6-3, 7-6 (3) win in the quarterfinals.
The Belgian player rallied after losing the opening set to end Bertens' 13-match winning run after two hours and 34 minutes. Flipkens advances to a semifinal against Alison Riske of the United States. It will be Flipkens' second career clay-court semifinal.
NUREMBERG, Germany (AP) — Yulia Putintseva came from a set down to defeat top-seeded Sloane Stephens 5-7, 6-4, 7-6 (3) in a match played over two days in the first round of the Nuremberg Cup.
Their match has been suspended due to darkness at 3-3 in the final set on Tuesday, and Putintseva went on to win the tiebreaker after both traded breaks.
The Kazakh player was due to face another American, Alison Riske, in the second round later Wednesday.

Fed Cup: Parmentier to open play for France against Belgium
PARIS (AP) — Pauline Parmentier will open play against in-form Elise Mertens in France's Fed Cup first-round tie against Belgium on Saturday.
France's top player, Kristina Mladenovic, will take on Kirsten Flipkens in the second singles on the indoor hard-court of Mouilleron-le-Captif, in western France.
Mertens made it to the Australian Open semifinals last month, losing to eventual champion Caroline Wozniaki.
Radwanska advances to Connecticut Open semifinals
NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) — Top-seeded defending champion Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland beat eighth-seeded Shuai Peng of China 7-5, 6-3 on Thursday night to reach the Connecticut Open semifinals.
"She's definitely a tough opponent," Radwanska said. "I've played her a few times before so I knew what I had to do. I really pushed myself even more than 100 percent today."

NEW HAVEN — Ana Bogdan’s second-round exit Wednesday at the Connecticut Open came about a week after she thought she might not even start here at all.
Last Wednesday, Anna-Lena Friedsam dropped out of the U.S. Open. Bogdan, ranked 127th in the world, took her place, avoiding having to qualify at Flushing Meadows this week. And that meant she could go through qualifying here.
KEY BISCAYNE, Fla. (AP) — Former French Open runner-up Sara Errani edged Belinda Bencic 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 in the Miami Open's first round Tuesday to win a match between former top-10 players.
Errani was once as high as No. 5 and a finalist at Roland Garros in 2012, but she has won only two Grand Slam matches since the start of 2016 and is now ranked 102nd. Bencic has been ranked No. 7 and is now 135th.

American Taylor Fritz earns 1st win at Indian Wells
INDIAN WELLS, Calif. (AP) — Taylor Fritz earned his first win at the BNP Paribas Open on Friday, beating Benoit Paire of France 6-3, 6-2 in the first round.
The 19-year-old American is trying to return to the top 100 in the ATP Tour world rankings after rising to No. 53 last August. Fritz moved on to a second-round match against sixth-seeded Marin Cilic.
4th-seeded Nao Hibino advances to Tashkent Open semifinals
TASHKENT, Uzbekistan (AP) — Defending champion Nao Hibino reached the semifinals of the Tashkent Open on Thursday, advancing when Lesia Tsurenko retired after losing the first set 7-6 (6).
Tsurenko, who won last week's Guangzhou Open, had been on a seven match winning streak.

TASHKENT, Uzbekistan (AP) — Second-seeded Kirsten Flipkens of Belgium saved 12 of 14 break points and beat Ana Bodgan of Romania 7-6 (7), 6-3 on Tuesday in the first round of the Tashkent Open.
Flipkens is the highest ranked player in the tournament after top-seeded Johanna Larsson withdrew with an illness before main-draw play began.

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) — Top seed Agnieszka Radwanska overcame a slow start and breezed past Jelena Ostapenko 7-5, 6-1 on Tuesday night in the second round of the Connecticut Open.
Ostapenko had upset four-time New Haven champion Caroline Wozniacki in the first round and had a set point, leading the fourth-ranked player in the world 5-4. But Radwanska rallied to hold serve, then broke the 19-year-old from Latvia in the 11th game to take control of the match.

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — When Venus Williams pushed one last forehand long to lose in the first round for the first time in her record five Olympic singles tournaments, her opponent celebrated as if having claimed a gold medal, dropping down on the green hard court to plant a kiss on the white five-ring logo.
This was clearly a very big deal to Kirsten Flipkens, a Belgian ranked 62nd and only once as far as the semifinals at a Grand Slam event.
