USC’s Helton “happy for” Kingsbury after Cardinals swoop in
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Although Kliff Kingsbury was Southern California's offensive coordinator for just 34 days, Clay Helton says he isn't mad after the Arizona Cardinals swooped in.
Kingsbury became the Cardinals' head coach and left the Trojans in the lurch Tuesday, leaving LA just over one month after he agreed to take charge of USC's offense. The former Texas Tech coach's abrupt departure throws USC right back into turmoil, but Helton was graceful and conciliatory in a brief statement.

USC lands Kliff Kingsbury as Helton’s offensive coordinator
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Former Texas Tech coach Kliff Kingsbury was named Clay Helton's offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Southern California on Wednesday.

Baylor gets bowl eligible with 35-24 win over Texas Tech
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Charlie Brewer was going to play more games for Baylor no matter what happened Saturday. Now the sophomore quarterback gets to go to a bowl with the seniors who stuck around through some tough times.
Brewer threw for 308 yards with three touchdowns and ran for a score as the Bears beat Texas Tech 35-24 in the regular season finale to get bowl eligible a year after winning only one game.
Different modes for Baylor, Texas Tech to get bowl eligible
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Texas Tech and Baylor have reached the regular-season finale in the same position, needing a win to get bowl eligible.
"It's a playoff game," Baylor coach Matt Rhule said. "Win or go home."
Still, the modes of the two teams couldn't be much more different going into Saturday's game in the NFL stadium where the Big 12 championship game will be played a week later.
Status of most Big 12 coaches not in air even with KU change
David Beaty has already been replaced at Kansas as he gets ready to coach his final game with the Jayhawks.

Road warrior Red Raiders ready for trip to Kansas State
MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Texas Tech coach Kliff Kingsbury spoke glowingly of the fan base at Kansas State, where no matter how much the Wildcats are winning or losing, they always seem to make it a tough road environment.
"It's a great home-field advantage," said Kingsbury, who has experienced it as both a player and a coach. "They show up, they're loud (and) the players feed off it."

Defense, frosh QBs headline Tech-Iowa State matchup

Texas Tech keeps QB mystery under wraps with Kansas visiting
LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) — Jett Duffey is coming off a road win in his first career start, and Alan Bowman is now three weeks removed from a crunching hit that led to a partially collapsed lung.

Duffey’s QB draw for score pushes Texas Tech past TCU 17-14
FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — Jett Duffey got his first start for Texas Tech with two other quarterbacks hurt, and one of them actually replaced him after halftime.
After McLane Carter played only one series on his sprained left ankle that wasn't ready for full-speed action, Duffey returned to throw a 62-yard touchdown pass and scored the go-ahead touchdown on a 38-yard draw play as the Red Raiders beat TCU 17-14 on Thursday night.

STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) — Texas Tech coach Kliff Kingsbury admitted he didn't know how good Alan Bowman was when he put the freshman into the season opener after an injury to starter McLane Carter.
Kingsbury and the rest of the Red Raiders have a pretty good idea what Bowman is capable of these days.
Led by Bowman's 397 yards passing and two touchdowns, Texas Tech won its third straight game since that opening loss to Mississippi with a 41-17 victory over No. 15 Oklahoma State on Saturday night.
Texas Tech’s Alan Bowman leads Big 12′s emerging young stars
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — Sure, Texas Tech coach Kliff Kingsbury is gushing about quarterback Alan Bowman's fast start. What surprises him most is the freshman's ability so far to limit his mistakes.
Bowman threw for 605 yards and five touchdowns last week in a 63-49 win over Houston, giving the pass-happy Big 12 a peek at its future following the departures of stars such as Heisman Trophy winner Baker Mayfield of Oklahoma and Mason Rudolph at Oklahoma State.
Bowman throws for 605 yards as Texas Tech tops Houston 63-49
LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) — Alan Bowman has a long list of prolific Texas Tech quarterbacks to chase on the career charts.
The true freshman quickly accomplished something one of his predecessors — coach Kliff Kingsbury — never did: a 600-yard game.
Bowman threw for 605 yards with five touchdowns — three to Antoine Wesley who set a school record with 261 yards receiving — and the Red Raiders beat Houston 63-49 on Saturday.
Cougars coach knows what to expect against Texas Tech
LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) — Houston coach Major Applewhite knows what to expect against Texas Tech after facing the Red Raiders as a player, assistant coach and a head coach over the past two decades.
"They always score points, have a great tempo, and they take the ball away," said Applewhite, who at Texas was a Big 12 quarterback at the same time as Kliff Kingsbury. "Defensively, they're holding you under 400 yards, and they have nine starters returning on defense. They're a very good football team."
Kingsbury back on hot seat for Texas Tech’s home opener
LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) — Texas Tech coach Kliff Kingsbury doesn't expect his players to have a hard time bouncing back from a disappointing opener.
Getting their coach off the hot seat again will take a lot more from the Red Raiders (0-1) than a win over FCS team Lamar (0-1), their opponent in their home opener Saturday.
Different tone of talk about Texas Tech’s defense in Big 12
Kliff Kingsbury knows all about players wanting to go to Texas Tech to be part of a big-play, high-scoring offense. He was one, a quarterback who passed for a lot of yards and touchdowns as a three-year starter long before becoming the Red Raiders coach.
Kingsbury certainly doesn't expect that mode to change, not for the Red Raiders or any other of the potent offenses in the Big 12.
Kingsbury not nervous about Texas Tech’s QB uncertainty
Texas Tech coach Kliff Kingsbury was asked if he was nervous about the uncertainty at quarterback for the Red Raiders.
"Just because they're young or inexperienced, to me you never know how they're going to respond," Kingsbury said. "I wouldn't say nervous. I think excited to not really know who it is and be able to work with those guys and try to have one guy really step up."
Bonney to Texas Tech after transfer from Big 12 rival Texas

A Lubbock Police Department statement says officers were at an apartment complex as part of an ongoing investigation Thursday afternoon when Shorts, who's 21, was arrested. Details of what prompted his arrest haven't been disclosed.
He's in the Lubbock County Jail, where records list no attorney for him.
LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) — Kliff Kingsbury is still popular at Texas Tech, five years after his hiring as coach unified a fractured football program at his alma mater.
As much as fans on the West Texas plains want one of their own to succeed, patience wanes with just two winning seasons and a losing overall record heading into the former quarterback's sixth year.
