Cornet loses at Hong Kong Open, Muguruza advances
HONG KONG (AP) — Eighth-seeded Alize Cornet lost to 105th-ranked Lusksika Kumkhum of Thailand at the rain-affected Hong Kong Open on Wednesday, while No. 4 Garbine Muguruza easily advanced to the quarterfinals.
After rain delayed play for four hours, Cornet came from 4-1 down in the final set to force a tiebreaker but lost 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (5) against Kumkhum.
Kucova beats Ostapenko in 1st round at Hong Kong Open
HONG KONG (AP) — Kristina Kucova recorded her first WTA main draw victory in over a year when she beat Jelena Ostapenko 5-7, 6-3, 6-2 in the first round of Hong Kong Open on Monday.
Ostapenko struggled with a left wrist injury at the Wuhan Open and China Open but still managed to win the first set.
Kucova will next face lucky loser Viktoriya Tomova, who defeated Dalila Jakupovic 6-3, 2-6, 7-6 (3).
PRAGUE (AP) — Defending champion Lucie Safarova withdrew from the Prague Open on Wednesday ahead of her second-round match against Kristyna Pliskova because of illness.
Organizers said she was ill before the tournament and her condition worsened after her 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 victory over Kristina Kucova on Tuesday.
In the quarterfinals, Pliskova will face 144th-ranked Beatriz Haddad Maia. The Brazilian qualifier beat fourth-seeded Sam Stosur 6-3, 6-2.
PRAGUE (AP) — Second-seeded Caroline Wozniacki advanced to the second round of the Prague Open by beating Misaki Doi of Japan 6-0, 7-5 Tuesday.
The former No. 1 from Denmark will next face Jelena Ostapenko.
Also, third-seeded Barbora Strycova dispatched Julia Goerges of Germany 6-4, 6-0 to play another Czech, qualifier Lucie Hradecka.
KEY BISCAYNE, Fla. (AP) — Former French Open runner-up Sara Errani edged Belinda Bencic 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 in the Miami Open's first round Tuesday to win a match between former top-10 players.
Errani was once as high as No. 5 and a finalist at Roland Garros in 2012, but she has won only two Grand Slam matches since the start of 2016 and is now ranked 102nd. Bencic has been ranked No. 7 and is now 135th.
They combined for 14 service breaks in 28 games Tuesday.
