SHENZHEN, China (AP) — Qualifier Monica Niculescu upset fourth-seeded Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia 6-0, 6-2 in the first round of the Shenzhen Open on Tuesday.
The 99th-ranked Niculescu swept past the 2017 French Open champion in 51 minutes with Ostapenko winning only four points in the first set.
"I came here early, and actually I didn't spend Christmas at home, I spent it on the plane," Niculescu said.

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — Kristyna Pliskova rallied from a set down to knock out two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova at the WTA's Volvo Car Open on Wednesday.
Kvitova of the Czech Republic won six of the first seven games to take the opening set before countrywoman Pliskova came back for a 1-6, 6-1, 6-3 victory to advance to the round of 16 in the WTA's first clay-court event of the season.
Kvitova had won 24 straight matches against Czech players before Pliskova's victory.
INDIAN WELLS, Calif. (AP) — Third-ranked Garbine Muguruza was upset by American qualifier Sachia Vickery 2-6, 7-5, 6-1 on Friday night at the BNP Paribas Open.

KEY BISCAYNE, Fla. (AP) — Former French Open runner-up Sara Errani edged Belinda Bencic 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 in the Miami Open's first round Tuesday to win a match between former top-10 players.
Errani was once as high as No. 5 and a finalist at Roland Garros in 2012, but she has won only two Grand Slam matches since the start of 2016 and is now ranked 102nd. Bencic has been ranked No. 7 and is now 135th.

Kristyna Pliskova beats Hibino in Tashkent for 1st title
TASHKENT, Uzbekistan (AP) — Kristyna Pliskova of the Czech Republic won her first WTA tournament on Saturday at the Tashkent Open, beating defending champion Nao Hibino of Japan in the final.
Pliskova fired in 10 aces on her way to a 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 win over the fourth-seeded Hibino, who was aiming to become the first woman to retain the Tashkent title.
4th-seeded Nao Hibino advances to Tashkent Open semifinals
TASHKENT, Uzbekistan (AP) — Defending champion Nao Hibino reached the semifinals of the Tashkent Open on Thursday, advancing when Lesia Tsurenko retired after losing the first set 7-6 (6).
